Protesters Target NV Energy At Utility Conference As Anger Over Soaring Electricity Prices Boils Over

By Herman Trabish of UtilityDive Protesters shouting affordability complaints and chanting slogans interrupted a speech by NV Energy President and CEO Brandon Barkhuff on Wednesday. Barkhuff was speaking to some 1,000 utility executives and electricity industry stakeholders during the Edison Electric Institute 2026 conference at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas. After being escorted out by security, the protesters spoke to the media outside the hotel to demand the cancellation of a daily demand charge for NV Energy customers slated to take effect Jan. 1, 2027, as well as to demand action on clean energy and high electricity bills. The confrontation shows the extent to which energy costs have stoked public anger, raising pressure on utilities and their regulators.   Leslie Vega, climate equity policy fellow at the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada, speaks to the media on June 3, 2026, after protests at an electric utility conference in Las Vegas. The group was protesting high electricity bills and NV Energy’s use of residential demand charges.  Utilities have made affordability a cornerstone of their public messaging as they …

AI gold rush sends San Francisco rents soaring

AI gold rush sends San Francisco rents soaring

In San Francisco’s latest real estate boom, renters are paying cash up front, multimillion-dollar houses are selling auction-style and AI company stock can buy a sprawling hilltop estate. It’s a reflection of the new wave of wealth from the artificial intelligence industry, leaving even well-paid newcomers scrambling for a place to live. For Jenni Lee, a Chicago tech worker seeking to join her boyfriend in the Bay Area, finding an apartment has at times felt more difficult than getting a job. She has spent six months searching for a San Francisco rental, flying in for tours and repeatedly losing out on offers, even after the couple almost doubled their budget to $6,500 a month for a two-bedroom. In Illinois, her friends were living in desirable places for less than half that. At one point she showed up to what she thought was a private appointment just to wait in line and later find out someone had already signed a lease. One $7,000-a-month home didn’t have a washer-dryer — though the touring agent assured her there …

Commentary: Soaring World Cup ticket prices could bring in USb for FIFA, but where will the money go?

Commentary: Soaring World Cup ticket prices could bring in US$15b for FIFA, but where will the money go?

In the 2023-26 cycle, the budget for competitions rose from US$2.45 billion to US$5.62 billion, about a 130 per cent increase, while the budget for development increased only 44 per cent, and its share of budgeted revenues dropped from 44 per cent to 36 per cent. FIFA could argue that maximum revenue is needed to cover costs of future events and fund football development, but that is not the whole story told by FIFA’s 2027-2030 budget. Total additional costs are set at around US$3 billion, with the main driver being competition and events. Crucially, for the 2019-2022 cycle, development was 44 per cent of the costs; for 2023-2026, it dropped to 36 per cent of the costs; and for the 2027-2030 cycle, it is budgeted to further decrease to 29 per cent of costs.  Undoubtedly, these numbers will change, but they currently do not signal that FIFA is going to use its additional ticketing revenue to support broader football-related or social change investments. That is perhaps not surprising, as FIFA has faced governance challenges in …

Handyman adapts Barbie Dream Camper to handle soaring gas prices

Handyman adapts Barbie Dream Camper to handle soaring gas prices

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. There are over 283 million cars cruising the United States, and over 90 percent of them are still guzzling gas. Apart from the obvious environmental problems, fuel prices also continue to skyrocket thanks to the ongoing war in Iran. The average price for gas is currently around 33 percent higher than it was before the crisis, and there is little sign that those numbers are going down anytime soon. The strain is forcing many drives to reconsider how they get around—and they’re getting creative with it. In Georgia, a 30-year-old handyman is showing everyone how to properly adapt to uncertain times. According to a recent Reuters profile, Mali Hightower has retrofitted a discarded, bright pink Power Wheels Barbie Dream Camper with a two-gallon, one-piston engine for his shorter commuting needs. “I drive this when I can,” Hightower said on May 19.  A pink Barbie cart is one man’s solution to high gas prices To get it going, a driver …

Gas prices have been soaring, hitting a national average of $4.52 per gallon on Sunday, according to data from motor club AAA — an increase of more than 50% since the start of the Iran war. Asked by moderator Kristen Welker whether he would support suspending the federal gas tax, Wright said that “all measures that can be taken to lower the price at the pump and lower the prices for Americans, this administration is in support of.” Asked to clarify whether President Donald Trump is open to suspending the federal gas tax, which stands at about 18 cents a gallon, Wright said, “We’re open to all ideas.” “Everything has trade-offs,” he added. Democrats in Congress introduced a bill in March to temporarily suspend the federal gas …

Soaring antisemitism sparks Met Police push to protect London’s Jewish population | UK | News

The Met Police is putting 100 extra officers in northwest London (Image: Getty) The Met Police has announced a Community Protection Team of 100 extra officers, as further arrests were made for antisemitic hate crimes. This follows the attacks in Golders Green on April 29, where two Jewish men were stabbed, and a suspected arson attack at a synagogue today (May 5). The new group combines neighbourhood policing, specialist protection, and counter terrorism teams. It is being done to provide a “more visible, intelligence‑led and coordinated presence focused on protecting Jewish communities” across London. The Met said that this approach reflects “what we know works best”: officers who are locally based, understand their communities, and have strong relationships with residents, schools, faith leaders and volunteers. It marks the beginning of “a new, more sustainable and consistent model of protection” built around “local knowledge, visibility and partnership, rather than relying solely on repeated short‑term surges”. This new team will be primarily focused on protecting the Jewish community, which faces some of the highest levels of hate …

EU plans emergency state aid rule change to address soaring energy costs – POLITICO

EU plans emergency state aid rule change to address soaring energy costs – POLITICO

The Commission will consult member countries on state aid changes this week, she said. Other measures the Commission is planning include a “toolkit,” to be released April 22, that will contain plans for gas storage filling and guidelines for temporary measures to reduce taxes on energy bills and reduce demand, von der Leyen said following a meeting of Commission officials. Demand-reduction schemes might revolve around building renovation and the renewal of industrial equipment, she said. Von der Leyen also urged lawmakers and member countries to conclude their work on the EU grids package — a plan to upgrade and expand Europe’s electricity network — by the beginning of the summer, saying electrification of the economy was the long-term solution to soaring oil and gas costs. The Commission is also working on a legislative proposal on changes to electricity taxes and grids charges which would be presented in May, and will adopt an EU-wide electrification target before the summer to reduce fossil fuel dependence, she said. The Commission will also imminently release updated benchmarks for the …
