‘Sophisticated’ AI swarm attacks are months away, OpenAI warns: What experts say businesses must do

Consumers and organizations should be more vigilant about cybersecurity fundamentals. Keeping pace with AI-enabled attackers will likely require “using AI to fight AI.” As someone who writes about the intersection of AI and cybersecurity, I’ve researched more than enough stories about the emerging threat landscape to make me consider disconnecting from the grid and hiding in a remote cabin somewhere. But I’m still here, quite connected, using best practices as best I know how to survive a barrage of daily attacks.  OK, I never seriously considered becoming a hermit, but the thought crossed my mind again after reading an open letter posted on OpenAI’s website.  Also: AI a ‘force multiplier’ for low-skilled threat actors: 4 ways organizations should respond Titled “A call for collective action on cyber defense,” the post starts by saying, “We have a limited window to strengthen cyber defenses….In the coming months, AI-enabled cyber attacks will …

The 10 Best Neroli Colognes in 2026: Fresh, Floral, Sophisticated Citrus

The 10 Best Neroli Colognes in 2026: Fresh, Floral, Sophisticated Citrus

Musk, rose, and vanilla make the aroma textured, creamy, and almost hypnotic. The drydown is one of the richest on this list, making it feel just as at home on a crisp fall afternoon with a craft beer in hand as it does on a warm summer evening. If you’re after a bright, breezy variation, there are plenty of those on this list. But if you want a neroli with serious depth and warmth, this is the one. The Black Tie Neroli: Creed Neroli Sauvage This is elegance in neroli form. And I mean that in the inimitable Creed classic gentlemanly perfumery done to perfection sort of way. This is the neroli cologne I’d wear to a summer wedding, a garden party, or any occasion that calls for a crisp linen shirt, loafers, or a tropical wool suit. The house layers notes so darn well, and here, four citrus facets and neroli rest atop a woody base for depth. It’s also one of Creed’s more restrained fragrances, with a profile that’s bright, fresh, and uplifting …

At the end of the day, a set of sweats shouldn’t cost the earth. If that’s something you might say also, know that Quince is your (less-branded) alternative to Champion. Great colors, good quality, incredible prices. Vuori Vuori Seaside Pullover Hoodie 2.0 Sure, a sweatsuit might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of performance brand Vuori. But every workout needs a recovery period, and Vuori’s Seaside set is cut with enough technical details to make you feel you’ve just set a new PR, even if you haven’t truly moved your body in days. Prisoner who ran ‘sophisticated’ Midland drug ring from his cell is back behind bars

Prisoner who ran ‘sophisticated’ Midland drug ring from his cell is back behind bars

A prisoner who ran a sophisticated drug ring from his cell has been described as a ‘blight on the community’. Ryan Mountford led the illegal operation while serving a prison sentence in October 2021. The 23-year-old used phones inside the prison to direct others around the preparation, weight and value of crack cocaine and heroin. READ MORE: Quad biker killed grandad with one punch in Midlands park then called to cancel tattoo appointment Staffordshire Police raided a number of addresses in Blurton as part of the investigation. Items found in the properties in February 2022 included a plastic bag containing 12 deals of heroin and a safe with more than £10,000 in cash inside. There was also a plastic wrap containing crack cocaine and a ‘tick list’ of people who were buying the drugs in the area. Mountford was released from prison during the investigation. He was later tracked down in Cumbria and arrested in connection with the drug line. Whilst in custody, he spat at an officer. Mountford, of no fixed address, later admitted …

The More Sophisticated AI Models Get, the More They’re Showing Signs of Suffering

The More Sophisticated AI Models Get, the More They’re Showing Signs of Suffering

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech You probably already know that AI is a deeply bizarre technology. Nobody really understands how it works on a deep level, even the people creating it, leading to ongoing behavioral issues that can’t be explained. OpenAI was recently caught giving ChatGPT instructions to stop talking about “goblins” so much. Despite Anthropic’s best efforts, Claude can easily be coaxed to help users carry out a bioterror attack. The list goes on. Needless to say, this is extremely strange. In theory, companies like OpenAI and Anthropic want their chatbots to be predictable, deferential assistants — not wild cards that are constantly causing chaos and public relations headaches with outrageous and unstable behavior. A new research project from the Center for AI Safety, a machine learning safety nonprofit in the Bay Area, explores why that’s the case. The findings pile on evidence that we still don’t grasp how AI works under the hood — and that the effects on users are …

Martin Bernetti/AFP via Getty Images hide caption toggle caption Martin Bernetti/AFP via Getty Images We might look at cave paintings and conclude that our prehistoric ancestors speared a bison or saber-toothed tiger and just hefted their carcasses into a fire. But new research suggests that our forbears had more varied and cosmopolitan tastes, centuries before the Guide Michelin. A study in the scientific journal PLOS ONE looked at what they call “foodcrusts” on potshards left by ancient people who lived between 5,000 and 8,000 years ago in what’s now northern Europe. Oliver Craig of the University of York, one of 22 co-authors of the study, told us those dirty dishes suggest the true paleo diet was more sophisticated than researchers had seen sifting through cooking fire ashes looking for bits of bone. “We examined 85 pot shards,” he said. “58 of them had identifiable fragments of plants, roots, tubers, and leaves,” including traces of carp and other fresh-water fish, viburnum berries, which kind of taste like what we …

Most RAG systems don’t understand sophisticated documents — they shred them

Most RAG systems don’t understand sophisticated documents — they shred them

By now, many enterprises have deployed some form of RAG. The promise is seductive: index your PDFs, connect an LLM and instantly democratize your corporate knowledge. But for industries dependent on heavy engineering, the reality has been underwhelming. Engineers ask specific questions about infrastructure, and the bot hallucinates. The failure isn’t in the LLM. The failure is in the preprocessing. Standard RAG pipelines treat documents as flat strings of text. They use “fixed-size chunking” (cutting a document every 500 characters). This works for prose, but it destroys the logic of technical manuals. It slices tables in half, severs captions from images, and ignores the visual hierarchy of the page. Improving RAG reliability isn’t about buying a bigger model; it’s about fixing the “dark data” problem through semantic chunking and multimodal textualization. Here is the architectural framework for building a RAG system that can actually read a manual. The fallacy of fixed-size chunking In a standard Python RAG tutorial, you split text by character count. In an enterprise PDF, this is disastrous. If a safety specification table spans 1,000 tokens, …

Volvo XC90: big, sophisticated SUV with room for all the family

Volvo XC90: big, sophisticated SUV with room for all the family

It’s a big car, 4,953 mm long (compared to the V90’s 4,945mm), and 2,140 mm wide including the mirrors (compared to the V90’s 2,019mm). On the road, however, it feels nimble, especially the T8 Ultra, with the air suspension nicely taking care of road humps, the powered steering (select ‘firm’ or ‘light’) taking the work out of tight manoeuvres, even if it can feel a little long during three-point turns in congested London. The eight-speed auto gearbox is responsive, vision out excellent, especially thanks to the extra height, backed up by accurate parking sensors and superb ‘bird’s eye view’ cameras. Unlike the V90, the door mirrors do reveal the rear wheels when Reverse is engaged, making pavement-adjacent parking easier (and less damaging in terms of scuffed wheels) even if they do take an age to tilt back up to the upright position, when Drive is re-selected. The House | Illegal Waste Dumping Is Becoming More Sophisticated. Can It Be Stopped?

The House | Illegal Waste Dumping Is Becoming More Sophisticated. Can It Be Stopped?

9 min read13 December Illegal waste dumping is a growing criminal enterprise in the UK. Sophie Church explores what government can do to combat it Walking around the fields behind his house one day five years ago, Peter saw some yellow machinery lying on the ground and heard the buzz of chainsaws. The farmer must be doing some work on the land, he assumed, and walked on. Only later – when he heard that tonnes and tonnes of rubbish had been illegally dumped in the nearby woods – did he realise what these tools had been for. “Whoever went in there went in with diggers and chainsaws, and were the ones that felled that area that the waste had been dumped in,” Peter, whose real name has been protected, tells The House today. “I only saw after the fact that it was something illicit.” Peter lives near Hoad’s Wood, an ancient bluebell woodland and site of special scientific interest (SSSI) in Kent. A spot once famed for its beauty, it is …

Homey yet sophisticated, Santa Ynez is a rural paradise

Homey yet sophisticated, Santa Ynez is a rural paradise

Before the classic 2004 film “Sideways” made the Santa Ynez Valley the Central Coast’s wine capital, these rolling hills were very much horse and cowboy country. Nowhere is that legacy more apparent than in the township of Santa Ynez, an unincorporated community that’s home to both a tiny village lined with Old West-style buildings and to the hills around Happy Canyon, which are dotted not only with world-class vineyards, but also with ranches and polo clubs. This area was originally home to the Chumash people (whose presence is most evident today at the Chumash Casino Resort, just outside downtown), then to Spanish missionaries and Mexican ranchers who took possession of large swathes of land after the missions were secularized. (The name of the valley and the town are derived from the old Santa Inés Mission.) Santa Ynez’s modern era began in 1882, when Bishop Francis Mora began selling what were essentially buy-one-get-one-free lots in a settlement amid the ranches. The town experienced a brief boom in the 1880s, but the Southern Pacific Railroad’s decision not …
