Sally and Tim Metcalfe (Sally Dynevor and Joe Duttine) are facing quite the predicament in Coronation Street. Earlier this week, Tim bid farewell to his long-lost cousin Richie Parkinson (Nathan Sussex) after spending a few days catching up. He’d urged him to reconnect with wife Rachel amid their martial woes, and later dropped by his house on the other side of Manchester to return his wallet. The story then took a sour turn. Upon arrival, Tim noticed blood splattered across Richie’s shirt, and Rachel’s lifeless body on the kitchen floor. It appeared that he’d killed his spouse. The matter only complicated when a guilt-ridden Tim, who feared that this wouldn’t have happened had he not imparted relationship advice, discovered that Richie’s daughter Lucy (Anya Dewin) was struggling to find a foster home. A star rating of 4 out of 5. High concept doesn’t always equal high quality – we like sharks! We like tornadoes! Job done! But in this instance “dinosaurs in the suburbs” works a dream. It’s a loving homage to Steven Spielberg and The End of Oak Street less rips off Jurassic Park, ET and Jaws and more relies on audiences’ love for those films and the nostalgia they are imbued with to bring a fresh take to the ‘Spielburbia’ sub-genre. In the hands of director David Robert Mitchell, who made breakout horror hit It Follows, this is a moving, funny and thrilling family-friendly 12A romp, which still has a murky dark heart at the centre. Set (initially) in 1982, Oak Street lies in a friendly neighbourhood of kids on bikes, perfect lawns sullied by naughty dogs, school bullies and hot new high-schoolers. It’s dinosaur mayhem at the box office as two newcomers about the prehistoric beasts — The End of Oak Street and PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie — set out to challenge the behemoth that is Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Warner Bros. releases director David Robert Mitchell’s The End of Oak Street in 3,400 North American theaters on Friday, with the studio projecting an opening weekend in the range of $18 million to $23 million. Warner Bros. expects to add between $20 million to $25 million internationally for the sci-fi survival movie that hails from Bad Robot and carries an $80 million production budget. Anne Hathaway continues her busy 2026, leading the cast that also includes Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella and Christian Convery. David Robert Mitchell’s The End of Oak Street reminds us of this, delivering palaeontological chaos of the Spielberg variety. It’s entertaining as hell and silly when it needs to be, without sacrificing too much of the disaffected cool-kid style of the director’s previous, adult-orientated output – namely It Follows (2014), a horror haunted by suburban decay. The End of Oak Street is not only better than any of the Jurassic World films, but so much less stiff and fetishistic than the exhaustive line of Eighties “love letters” produced by Stranger Things’s Shawn Levy and his ilk. Soap fans, there’s some bad news. Sports coverage is about to disrupt scheduled editions of Coronation Street and Emmerdale. The soaps usually air in what ITV dub as “power hour”, each weekday evening at 8pm. This new time slot was introduced to provide consistency and to help navigate the disruption that the footy causes annually. However, since then, both serial dramas have been repeatedly shifted to accommodate other programmes. Today (Wednesday 12 August) is no exception, as the broadcaster will air coverage of the Manchester United v Leeds United pre-season friendly match from 7pm. Kick-off at the Croke Park in Dublin is at 7.30pm with analysis from John O’Shea and Michael Brown. Coronation Street and Emmerdale won’t air tonight. ITV Soap viewers will undoubtedly be wondering when their next slice of Weatherfield or Dales action will be. Luckily, you haven’t got long to wait. Coronation Street spoilers follow. A Coronation Street newcomer has weighed in on joining the ITV soap as part of a murder plot that hits close to home for Tim Metcalfe. Anya Dewin, who makes her Corrie debut this week, has posted a snap outside the iconic Rovers Return pub as she shared her longtime “dream” to star on the soap. Taking to Instagram, the actor reflected on playing Lucy Parkinson, the daughter of Tim’s cousin Richie, played by Nathan Sussex.
