‘Hero’ journalist donated kidney to teenage girl after Essex newspaper appeal

Maria Solecki, from Hadleigh, Essex, described the unexpected development after her 16-year-old daughter, Maya, suffered severe kidney damage following an E.coli infection in January 2024. Ms Solecki, 48, an executive assistant for a local charity, had been tested herself but was not a suitable donor, nor were other family members or contacts found via social media. Deciding to broaden her appeal, she contacted her local newspaper, the Echo, in March 2025. In what she called a “very unexpected twist”, the reporter assigned to the story was found to be compatible. The transplant operation successfully took place in January this year. Ms Solecki expressed her profound gratitude, stating her hope …

Early puberty links childhood poverty to teenage emotional struggles in girls

Early puberty links childhood poverty to teenage emotional struggles in girls

A recent study published in the journal Development and Psychopathology suggests that growing up in financially disadvantaged households or neighborhoods tends to be linked to an earlier onset of puberty in children. This earlier biological development provides evidence for a pathway that connects lower family income to increased mental health challenges and lower school grades, particularly in adolescent girls. Scientists know that children growing up with fewer financial and community resources often experience worse mental health and lower academic achievement. However, the exact biological and psychological mechanisms that connect a lack of resources to these negative outcomes remain somewhat unclear. Adolescence is a period of massive physical and emotional change, making it a highly relevant window for understanding these patterns. Some scientific models suggest that early life stress, such as economic hardship, might speed up physical development. In environments where resources are scarce, the human body might adapt by accelerating reproductive readiness as a survival strategy. Chronic stress from financial strain or neighborhood disadvantage can disrupt the body’s stress response system, leading to irregular hormone …

what teenage girls told us

what teenage girls told us

Women experience greater low mood and anxiety than men. This longstanding gender mental health gap reflects a complicated mix of biological, psychological, social, and sociocultural factors – though we are still far from fully understanding it. NHS data shows that young women aged 17-19 are twice as likely to have a mental health disorder as young men. Other national data shows steeper increases in symptoms of low mood and anxiety for girls. Common explanations put forward include social media, increased sexualisation of girls and growing academic pressure. But girls themselves have rarely been asked what they think. This limits our understanding of their needs and experiences. In a study on what girls themselves think about worsening trends in girls’ low mood and anxiety, I worked closely with two young women, Pratyasha and Jo, from start to finish. This was important to make sure we not only listened to girls, but that we also asked them the right questions in a constructive way and could better understand what they told us. We worked together throughout, to …

Man accused of sexually abusing hundreds of teenage girls over social media is transported to the US

FBI agents escort Zobaidul Amin to an airplane in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, March 4, 2026, for transport to Anchorage, Alaska, where he faces charges of child pornography and exploitation. AP A Bangladeshi man accused of using social media to trick teenage girls into sending him sexually explicit images – and then threatening to share them with their friends and family if they didn’t send more – has been transported to Alaska to face federal charges of child sexual exploitation. Zobaidul Amin, 28, pleaded not guilty during an initial court appearance in Anchorage on Thursday after the FBI took custody of him in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he had been studying medicine and facing related charges, US prosecutors wrote in a detention memorandum. “Amin delighted in sexually abusing hundreds of minor victims over social media,” the document said. “He bragged about causing victims to become suicidal and engage in self-harm. He shared hundreds of nude images and videos of minor victims all over the internet and encouraged other perpetrators to do the same.” A federal grand …

Teenage boy dies after blaze in flat next to Old Kent Road Fire Station in London | UK News

A teenage boy has died in a flat fire that broke out next to Old Kent Road fire station in south London. Crews from other areas were called in as one of the engines from Old Kent Road was at another incident at the time. Four fire engines and around 25 personnel tackled the blaze on the first floor of a six-storey building in Cooper’s Road, Southwark, on Wednesday. One teenage boy made it out before firefighters arrived and was taken to hospital, while another died at the scene, London Fire Brigade (LFB) said. The first emergency call was received shortly before 3pm. Crews from Dockhead, Dowgate, Shadwell and Whitechapel went to the scene and the blaze was under control just after 4.30pm. A 64-metre turntable ladder appliance from Old Kent Road Fire Station was on the scene within six minutes of the call, an LFB spokesperson said. The spokesperson added: “Another appliance from Old Kent Road was out at a different incident but did return to the scene of the incident later.” The cause …

Scientists trace a neurodevelopmental link between infant screen time and teenage anxiety

Scientists trace a neurodevelopmental link between infant screen time and teenage anxiety

An analysis of the Growing Up in Singapore Towards Healthy Outcomes (GUSTO) data found that higher infant screen time was associated with higher deliberation time needed in a neuropsychological task at 8.5 years of age. Individuals with higher deliberation time in this task tended to show greater anxiety symptoms at age 13. The paper was published in eBioMedicine. In modern society, devices using screens are present everywhere. Globally, the amount of time young children spend on screens is increasing. Studies indicate that infants generally engage in 2 to 3 hours of daily screen time. This is much more than health authorities, such as the World Health Organization, recommend. The time spent using screens is particularly concerning in the first two years of life when critical brain development processes occur. Brain volume doubles in the first year, and it increases by an additional 15% to 80% in the second year of life. Many studies so far have linked longer times spent using screens with less desirable outcomes in cognitive development, such as lower integration between the …

What John Travolta’s on-screen teenage daughter from Face/Off Dominique Swain is up to now

What John Travolta’s on-screen teenage daughter from Face/Off Dominique Swain is up to now

Sitting around the dinner table with John Travolta as he checks your homework is, naturally, an experience limited to his three children with his late wife Kelly Preston. That is, unless you’re Dominique Swain. The actress got her start working alongside John, as well as Nicolas Cage, in Face/Off  (1977) and as the titular character in Lolita.  We’re catching up on Dominique’s continuing work in show business, her long-term boyfriend and that first role that brought her into the company of Grease’‘s Danny Zuko. Though, expect fewer hand jives, kitschy school dances, and illegal races — face-swapping FBI hunts work up enough of a sweat. © Ron Galella Collection via Getty Dominique Swain starred in Face/Off alongside John Travolta and Nicholas Cage Who is Dominique Swain? Dominique Swain debuted in the US with a supporting role in Face/Off (1997), alongside John Travolta, before starring as the titular role in Adrian Lyne’s controversial adaptation of Lolita, which released in the US in 1978. Based on the 1955 novel by Vladimir Nabokov, the story traces a literature …
