Calf pain is one of the worst parts of stopping during a hike. Or worse still, once you’ve returned home and relaxed, only to get up and feel the intense tightness in your lower legs. I find it particularly bothersome when I try to start walking again after stopping for lunch. I stand up and discover my calves feel tight, and then it takes at least a mile to shake off the feeling. When I hike, I usually cover a much longer distance than my regular walks, which results in muscle usage that my body isn’t used to, and this could be the reason for the pain in my calves, according to physical therapist Cullen Johnson. In the secret ballot held on Tuesday, Rahman secured 99 votes, eight more compared with his competitor Kakouris. A total of 190 ballots were cast, with no invalid votes or abstentions. Karen Bass, Nithya Raman and Spencer Pratt are locked in a tight battle for Los Angeles mayor, according to a poll released Thursday, with incumbent Bass holding what pollsters called a statistically insignificant lead ahead of Tuesday’s primary. Bass had 26% support from likely voters, followed by City Councilmember Raman with 25% support, according to the poll by the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies, which was co-sponsored by The Times. Pratt, the former reality TV personality making his first bid for elected office, had support from 22% of the likely voters surveyed. Up until this latest poll, Bass had enjoyed a substantial lead over her challengers, with analysts predicting she would garner enough votes to make a Nov. 3 runoff with either Raman or Pratt. DJERBA, Tunisia (AP) — The annual Jewish pilgrimage to the 26-century-old El-Ghriba Synagogue in Tunisia drew a modest but notable return of international visitors this year, worshipping together under tight security after a deadly 2023 attack disrupted the festival. Visitors came from France, China, Ivory Coast and Italy, including France’s ambassador to Tunisia, a symbolic gesture after two French citizens were among those killed in the 2023 attack. A national guardsman shot and killed five people at the El-Ghriba synagogue soon after the festival that year, spreading fear among the local Jewish population and international pilgrims. Participants said about 500 people have attended this year’s pilgrimage, held on the Mediterranean island of Djerba from April 30 to May 6 to celebrate the Lag B’Omer Jewish holiday. Jews have lived in Tunisia since Roman times, and the pilgrimage remains central to the country’s small but long-standing Jewish community.
