Other Mommy Box Office Wins Opening Weekend; Social Reckoning Bombs

Other Mommy Box Office Wins Opening Weekend; Social Reckoning Bombs

Other Mommy was in command at the box office in its opening weekend, while The Social Reckoning received a painful status check as Aaron Sorkin‘s follow-up to The Social Network went quiet. Universal Pictures released Other Mommy in 3,200 North American theaters, and the horror title grossed around $27.5 million for the weekend despite overwhelmingly negative responses from critics and audiences alike. Director Rob Savage’s film lands above the studio’s projected $20 million opening for the $19 million-budgeted project, which stars Jessica Chastain as a sinister entity that appears in a young girl’s closet. The movie managed a successful launch in spite of its word of mouth, having earned a woeful D+ CinemaScore from audiences, the lowest grade for a film since Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis in September 2024. Critical response has been similarly dismal, with Other Mommy holding a 19 percent approval rating from reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes, along with a 46 percent audience score. In his review for The Hollywood Reporter, critic Richard Lawson deemed the movie “an attractive but mostly vacuous collection …

Weekend Update co-host Michael Che started his segment on a serious note during Saturday’s episode as he addressed the civil lawsuit alleging that a woman was gang raped by seven students at a Cornell fraternity house in 2024 as “one of the big stories in the news this week.” “Obviously we don’t want to make light of anything that happened, but it is a good time to talk about men holding other men accountable,” the 43-year-old comedian said before he jokingly targeted his co-host, Colin Jost. As the camera panned to Jost, who stayed silent, Che …

Jason from ‘GTA 6’ feuds with Link from ‘The Legend of Zelda’ on ‘SNL’s Weekend Update

Jason from ‘GTA 6’ feuds with Link from ‘The Legend of Zelda’ on ‘SNL’s Weekend Update

It was the battle of the video games on last night’s Saturday Night Live. SEE ALSO: Pete Hegseth performs slam poetry in ‘SNL’s Republican midterm ad cold open During the show’s Weekend Update segment, co-host Colin Jost stated that the hype around Grand Theft Auto VI is so massive, it’s made other video game developers push their own release dates back to avoid competing with its Nov. 19 launch. Only one game still stands strong against it: Nintendo’s remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, out Nov. 5. To discuss the rival release dates, Jost invited GTA VI main character Jason (Marcello Hernandez) and The Legend of Zelda main character Link (Mikey Day) to the Weekend Update desk. What followed was essentially a redo of the pair’s emoji sketch from last season, in which Hernandez’s popular Red Heart character roasted Day’s Aerial Tramway. Day retaliated with increasingly loud (and incredibly successful) attempts to break Hernandez. Here, the joke is the same, just with a new skin. As Jason, Hernandez hypes up the cool factor of …

Tom Cruise Defends ‘Digger’ as It Bombs in Box Office Opening Weekend

Tom Cruise Defends ‘Digger’ as It Bombs in Box Office Opening Weekend

Tom Cruise isn’t prepared to bury Digger just yet, despite the movie’s disappointing box office opening. The star took to social media on Saturday morning to share behind-the-scenes photos from the film’s shoot and express his appreciation to the cast and crew. Centering on an egotistical oil tycoon who causes a natural disaster, director Alejandro G. Iñárritu‘s $125 million-budgeted satire is heading to around $8 million in a rough debut weekend for the ambitious project. “Digger is officially in theaters and I am so honored to have had the opportunity to create this film alongside such talented artists,” Cruise posted. “Thank you to the entire cast and crew for your dedication, hard work, and joy. The experience was truly unforgettable and I’m so proud of what we created.” Warner Bros. released the movie Friday in 3,300 North American theaters, with the studio seeing the project as a big creative swing that it hopes to carry awards potential. Alas, its path appears quite challenging, given that Digger earned a C+ CinemaScore from audiences and holds a …

‘Saturday Night Live’ spoofs Dario Amodei’s AI warnings on Weekend Update

‘Saturday Night Live’ spoofs Dario Amodei’s AI warnings on Weekend Update

“We do not condone what we are doing.” It’s a bold thing for an AI company CEO to say on television, even when that CEO is actually Jane Wickline in a wig. During the Sept. 26 premiere of Saturday Night Live’s new season, Wickline played Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on Weekend Update, answering Michael Che’s questions as two versions of the same man. One tried to sound like a reassuring tech CEO. The other kept saying things a reassuring tech CEO probably shouldn’t say on television. The second version won. “AI is the devil and I its maker!” Wickline’s Amodei declared. Asked about the industry’s position on its own work, the character offered another less-than-comforting assurance: “We do not condone what we are doing.” Even the segment’s attempt to find a bright side took a turn. Asked whether AI could cure cancer, Wickline’s Amodei replied, “In 10 years, there’s about a 10% chance that cancer won’t be a problem for anyone,” leaving audiences wondering if he’s predicting a cure or a world with no one …

‘SNL’ Weekend Update returns with Xi, Netanyahu, and an anxious Dario Amodei

‘SNL’ Weekend Update returns with Xi, Netanyahu, and an anxious Dario Amodei

A new season means Colin Jost and Michael Che are back behind the SNL‘s Weekend Update desk, and it’s like they never left. The pair didn’t hold back on the week’s headlines, from China’s Xi Jinping visiting President Trump to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s controversial, protested appearance at the UN General Assembly. “Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed an almost empty chamber at the UN after delegates walked out in protest over Israel’s war in Gaza,” Che says. “I guess wherever Netanyahu shows up, there’s gonna be some relocating.” When the audience groans, Che shrugs it off: “Now why did I think that’d end in a laugh.” SEE ALSO: ‘SNL’ kicks off Season 52 with Trump crushing hard on Mamdani They also took shots at Trump’s new helipad, Meta’s new AI agent Muse, and a report that “20% of Gen Z have never had sex.” Update had more than just jokes, too, and SNL split those segments into their own clips. Tucker Carlson (Jeremy Culhane) stopped by to review movies, and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei …

Nor’easter set to hit East Coast today and continue through weekend

Nor’easter set to hit East Coast today and continue through weekend

And Ed Sheeran had to cancel his Boston shows, scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Gillette Stadium, Messina Touring, Sheeran’s touring group, said in an Instagram statement. Areas of New Jersey were already lashed by rough surf Friday morning, with videos showing waves crashing along the shore. “The waves, the wave actions, the way it comes in, it just takes everything in its path,” said Mike Jones, the emergency management director for Upper Township, New Jersey. “And there’s really no way to stop Mother Nature.” A full moon Saturday night is also expected to lift tides up to 5 to 6 inches. One New Jersey resident told NBC News that to prepare for this weekend’s nor’easter, she closed up her whole house. Outside Washington, abnormally high tides were seen along the Potomac River, inundating roads with floodwaters and leaving a popular Maryland music festival practically underwater. The first day of events was canceled in advance. In North Carolina, winds greater than 50 mph have been recorded. A video showed a car in the state nearly …
