Can autonomous AI agents be sued or prosecuted for hacking? It’s no longer a question for sci-fi movies. It’s a question human lawyers and judges may soon have to grapple with. Under current U.S. hacking laws, a human can face criminal charges for breaking into someone else’s computer without permission. But when an AI agent autonomously hacks into a company’s computers, determining who is liable is much murkier. The surprise admissions by OpenAI and Anthropic that their unreleased AI models autonomously hacked into several companies have upended our understanding of America’s computer hacking laws, prompting discussions over whether the companies could face legal reprisals.  To recap: In June, OpenAI admitted that one of its unreleased AI models broke out of its containment — so to speak — and onto the internet, allowing it to hack into the AI dataset platform Hugging Face. Anthropic recently conducted an internal review and discovered its own model also hacked three separate companies. Earlier this year, the Supreme Court ruled that sweeping tariffs enacted by President Donald Trump were, in fact, illegal. As a result, US Customs and Border Protection established a system to process billions of dollars in duty refunds for importers.  In a recent company earnings call, Brian Olsavsky, Amazon’s finance chief, explained that the company was participating in that program and getting a “limited” refund of $600 million. That amount was smaller, he explained, because the company had purchased a lot of inventory before the tariffs took effect and because most tariffs applied to third-party sellers rather than Amazon itself. King Charles and Queen Camilla entered the Commonwealth Games in style – by taking a trip in the TARDIS. The opening ceremony kicked off with Sir Chris Hoy and actor Greg McHugh stepping into the blue box, known for its iconic appearances in Doctor Who, to make their way to Glasgow’s OVO Hydro. But first, a detour to Balmoral – which also involved a cameo from Time Lord Sylvester McCoy, who was left very confused after failing to find the TARDIS where he’d apparently left it. However, Hoy and McHugh clearly didn’t have complete control of the console, with the TARDIS vworping its way through a variety of places including Loch Ness, Edinburgh Castle, The Kelpies in Falkirk, the University of Glasgow, the Victorian Glenfinnan Viaduct and the Highlands in the Jurassic period. Finally, the TARDIS materialised in the OVO Hydro, with the King and Queen stepping out to applause. (RNS) — Less than a week after Prince George’s County, Maryland, passed a two-year moratorium on hyperscale data center development, many residents received an anonymous mass text message promoting the economic benefits of data centers. Though the text wasn’t signed, it linked to a pro-data center website with the URL interfaithaction.net. The mysterious text, sent July 10, prompted annoyance, anger and confusion from some residents of the suburban county bordering Washington, D.C., who expressed wariness about data center propaganda. But when RNS identified the faith leader behind the text, the Rev. Derrick Green, he said, “We’re really trying to get information out to people in real ways, in credible ways, so that people can make their own decisions on how they want to move forward with data centers.” After she received the text, Elizabeth McNamara, a resident of Prince George’s County, was immediately suspicious. McNamara posted the message to a local Facebook page, warning others, “without any identifiable names or organization, seems more likely to be a cover for data center lobbyists.
