UK weather: Met Office issues yellow warning as south coast set to be lashed by strong winds

People are facing travel disruption and power cuts across the south of England as “unseasonably strong winds” are lashing the coast. Gusts of up to 55mph are expected to move eastwards from Cornwall through to Sussex on Saturday, with wet and windy conditions expected to last until the evening. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind covering the south west and parts of the south east as it cautioned the windy weather could bring power outages and travel disruption. Organisers at the Royal Cornwall Show said they had been forced to cancel the event’s final day due to the winds. They added the decision had been taken with “great regret”, following a “thorough assessment of forecast weather conditions”. A yellow weather warning for wind is in place (Met Office) The Met Office said the weather warning is in place from 9am to 7pm on Saturday. Strong winds have already arrived across western Cornwall during Saturday morning and move eastwards across Cornwall, English Channel coastal districts, and the Isle of Wight, before …

Israel expands ground operation beyond Yellow Line in south Lebanon as clashes intensify

Israel expands ground operation beyond Yellow Line in south Lebanon as clashes intensify

BEIRUT: The Israeli military has expanded its ground operations in southern Lebanon beyond a demarcation line that Israel set up several kilometres inside Lebanese territory after an April 16 ceasefire with Hezbollah, two sources said on Tuesday (May 26). The sources gave no further details on the extent of the advance beyond the so-called “Yellow Line“. The line, separate from the UN-demarcated “Blue Line” marking the frontier between Lebanon and Israel after Israel’s withdrawal in 2000, forms part of a proposed buffer zone extending 5km to 10 km (3 miles to 6 miles) into southern Lebanon, where Israeli troops continue to operate in dozens of largely abandoned villages. The move came amid escalating cross-border hostilities despite the ceasefire declared weeks ago. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday Israel would intensify strikes against Hezbollah, while a US official said the Iran-backed group had ignored warnings to halt attacks that risked undermining negotiations to end the US-Israeli war on Iran. Hezbollah said on Tuesday it had targeted Israeli forces advancing toward the southern Lebanese town …

Yellow top: The Canary launching daily left-wing tabloid newspaper

A mock up of The Canary’s front page and sports page, set to soft launch in 6,500 newsagents on 26 May. Picture: The Canary The Canary is launching a daily weekday national newspaper after an injection of cash from a used-car website founder in 2025. Director and CEO of the Canary Steve Topple said the paper is being launched to give a different perspective to “corporate media” and described “the threat of a Reform government in 2029” as a driving force behind the launch. The 32-page tabloid will feature a mix of original reporting and content taken from the Canary’s website, such as politics and human rights pieces, as well as coverage from international guest authors, TV, sports, and fashion coverage, plus puzzles and horoscopes. It will print Monday to Friday and cost £1.20 at newsagents, “so we will be the cheapest tabloid on the market, tying with The Sun”, said Topple. Three staff have been hired to produce additional content for the paper, which will be edited by the Canary’s current editorial team. If …

It Turns Out David Attenborough Is The Reason Tennis Balls Are Yellow

It Turns Out David Attenborough Is The Reason Tennis Balls Are Yellow

Just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, a fact comes along that changes everything for you. First, came the news that in most cases, it doesn’t matter too much whether you choose white or brown rice. And now, in another bit of chromatic trivia, it turns out that tennis balls used to be black or white until the ’70s (and Wimbledon held out until 1986). Their colour was dictated by the colour of the court (a light ball for a dark court and vice versa, so spectators can see it). ’Twas ever thus ― until a certain David Attenborough came along. What? Why? The Planet Earth presenter started working at the BBC in 1952 (having only watched one TV show). In an article with RadioTimes, David revealed that he was responsible for bringing colour to BBC2 for the first time in 1968. And he decided to focus on Wimbledon for the crowning episode of the transformation. “We had been asking the government over and over again and they wouldn’t allow us, until …

The Economy’s Warning Light Is Flashing Yellow

The Economy’s Warning Light Is Flashing Yellow

The job market is weakening, inflation is still too high, and we’re at serious risk of a once-in-50-years oil shock. This is almost the exact set of conditions that triggered the stagflation of the 1970s, which at the time was America’s worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. At the moment, the economy is still far from that kind of doomsday scenario, but the direction of travel is disquieting. The economy’s warning lights might not yet be flashing red, but they are certainly flashing yellow. The jobs report released this morning showed that the U.S. labor market lost 92,000 jobs in February, causing the unemployment rate to rise to 4.4 percent. The numbers for the previous two months, which had suggested decent job growth, were also revised downward: January now showed fewer job gains than initially estimated and December showed overall job losses. These new numbers continue the trend of last month’s revisions, which showed that the economy had added just 181,000 jobs in all of 2025, a tenth of the jobs that had been …
