Malaysia’s ‘aggressive’ move to double minimum expatriate salaries sends ‘strong’ signal to hire local

Malaysia’s ‘aggressive’ move to double minimum expatriate salaries sends ‘strong’ signal to hire local

But economist Geoffrey Williams, director of Williams Business Consultancy, said the claim that expatriates are taking jobs from locals is not true. “Firstly, there are too few expatriates to make that claim meaningful. Secondly, it is already costly to pay for visas, so they are not competitive in a cost sense,” he wrote in a post on LinkedIn. “Thirdly, expatriates are employed for very specific reasons based on experience and expertise. This will not change.” The Malaysian Immigration Department issued 180,812 EPs – including new applications and renewals – in 2025, up from 160,380 passes in 2024. Malaysia had 17.06 million employed people in October 2025. Williams told CNA it is not so much the comparison to regional countries that counts, but the way it has been communicated – “that Malaysia does not want expats somehow”. These changes have sparked fears among the expatriate community of being forced to leave once their contracts end, despite past contributions to local jobs and the economy. In its clarification document, the Home Affairs Ministry said contract extensions will …

Mark Rutte Sends Strong Message To Trump At Davos

Mark Rutte Sends Strong Message To Trump At Davos

Nato secretary general Mark Rutte delivered a brutal reality check to Donald Trump over his repeated claims that the military alliance would never come to America’s aid if it was attacked. The US president told the World Economic Forum in Davos “I’m not sure that they’d be there for us if we gave them the call” as he tried to rally support for his now-abandoned demand to take over Greenland from Denmark. He said: “I know them all very well. I’m not sure that they’d be there. I know we’d be there for them. I don’t know that they would be there for us.” His misinformed claims, which he has made on numerous occasions, overlook the fact that Nato member countries suffered hundreds of deaths in the Afghanistan war, which was triggered by the September 11 attack on the World Trade Centre in New York. Britain alone lost 457 soldiers, with the likes of France, Germany, Italy and Denmark also suffering many deaths. Rutte told Trump: ″There’s one thing I heard you say yesterday and …

Putin Ally Sends Trump Bizarre Warning Amid Greenland Row

Putin Ally Sends Trump Bizarre Warning Amid Greenland Row

One of Vladimir Putin’s top allies has sent Donald Trump a bizarre message amid the US president’s renewed push to “control” Greenland. Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev – who now sits as the deputy chair of Russia’s security council – warned Trump he is “running out of time” for his bid to “go down in history” by taking over the Arctic island. In a post on Telegram, Medvedev said: “Everybody understands what’s going on: he [Trump] wants to see the island [of Greenland] in Stars and Stripes on world maps (he has already released a new map showing Canada and Venezuela as US territories) and join the ranks of the founding fathers. “He would like to go down in history.” He added that the US leader is keen to “have his name written on the tablets of history in golden letters” – but claimed “his time is running out fast” – without specifying why. Trump has insisted that the US “needs” Greenland because of his security concerns around China and Russia expanding into the high …

Denmark sends more troops to Greenland – POLITICO

Denmark sends more troops to Greenland – POLITICO

The deployments came amid intensifying pressure from Trump, who wants to annex the Arctic island, a semi-autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. He has not ruled out using military force to do so. Trump denounced the move by allied countries, warning: “These Countries, who are playing this very dangerous game, have put a level of risk in play that is not tenable or sustainable.” Trump argues that Denmark hasn’t done enough to protect Greenland from a possible attack from Russia or China, joking that Copenhagen only has two dog sleds to defend the island. In reality, Denmark said last year it would boost defense spending for Greenland by 27.4 billion krone (€3.7 billion) for naval vessels, patrol aircraft, drones and surveillance radars. Despite Trump’s contention that Chinese and Russian vessels are “all over the place” near Greenland, there is no evidence that is the case. Denmark announced last week it was boosting its presence on Greenland and that the exercise could include guarding critical infrastructure, providing assistance to local authorities, receiving allied troops, deploying …

‘Prominent’ Chinese super-embassy sends ‘certain message’, US Speaker Mike Johnson says | US News

‘Prominent’ Chinese super-embassy sends ‘certain message’, US Speaker Mike Johnson says | US News

The Speaker of the US House of Representatives has said he wished America had been able to acquire the London site slated for a controversial Chinese “super embassy”. Mike Johnson, of the Republican Party, said there was “some symbolism” behind the fact China had been able to acquire the site at the Royal Mint Court over the US. However, speaking to Sky News’ Mornings with Ridge and Frost ahead of his address to the UK parliament on Tuesday, Mr Johnson said the plan for a large Chinese embassy close to sensitive communication cables did not mark a “great development from our perspective”. “That’s a great location for an embassy,” he told presenter Wilfred Frost. “I wish the US had taken that spot instead of China… there is some symbolism to that. “I think that’s part of the concern, just from friends who – and I say this as constructive criticism to our friends here – but it does send a certain message, it seems, that China would have such a prominent place and have such, …

California AG sends Musk’s xAI a cease-and-desist order over sexual deepfakes

California AG sends Musk’s xAI a cease-and-desist order over sexual deepfakes

Earlier this week, the California attorney general’s office announced that it was investigating xAI over reports that the startup’s chatbot, Grok, was being used to create nonconsensual sexual imagery of women and minors. On Friday, the government followed up by sending a cease-and-desist letter to the company, demanding that it take immediate action to stop the production of nonconsensual intimate images and CSAM — child sexual abuse material. “Today, I sent xAI a cease-and-desist letter, demanding the company immediately stop the creation and distribution of deepfake, nonconsensual, intimate images and child sexual abuse material,” said California AG Rob Bonta in a press release. “The creation of this material is illegal. I fully expect xAI to immediately comply. California has zero tolerance for [CSAM].” The AG’s office additionally claimed that xAI appeared to be “facilitating the large-scale production” of nonconsensual nudes, the likes of which are being “used to harass women and girls across the internet.” The agency said it expects xAI to prove that it is taking steps to address these issues within the next five …

Texas Sends Plato Back to His Cave

Texas Sends Plato Back to His Cave

Thomas Jefferson loathed Plato. In 1814, he wrote to John Adams that he had been reading the Republic and came away unimpressed: “Bringing Plato to the test of reason, take from him his sophisms, futilities, & incomprehensibilities, and what remains?” The only reason the Greek philosopher is so revered, Jefferson opined, is that “education is chiefly in the hands of persons who, from their profession, have an interest in the reputation and the dreams of Plato.” Even so, Jefferson would have been appalled by what happened last week at Texas A&M University. Days before the spring semester began, Martin Peterson, a philosophy professor, was ordered to remove Plato’s Symposium from the list of assigned readings for the class “Contemporary Moral Issues.” Peterson and Plato fell victim to a policy adopted by the university in the fall, which states that classes cannot “advocate race or gender ideology, or topics related to sexual orientation or gender identity” without special approval. In his email response to his department chair, Inside Higher Ed reported, Peterson warned, “You are making …
