What was Prince’s net worth at the time of his death? Revisiting his wealth 10 years later

It’s been exactly 10 years since the world lost one of its most revolutionary and boundary-pushing artists in Prince. The musician, real name Prince Rogers Nelson, died of an accidental overdose on counterfeit hydrocodone pills on April 21, 2016, just a few short months after releasing his last two studio albums while alive, HITnRUN Phase One and Two. And a decade later, his musical legacy is still thriving, with the release of the song “With This Tear” from his extensive vault to mark the poignant anniversary. The song was originally released by Celine Dion in 1992 from her self-titled album. © Getty ImagesIt’s been exactly 10 years since the world lost Prince Prince’s musical and on-screen work continues to be preserved and released by his estate, which also holds control over his record label Paisley Park. At the time of his death, Prince was one of the wealthiest musicians in the world, thanks in large part to his entrepreneurial skills as a producer and pioneer of the internet.  Prince’s net worth At the time of …

Los Angeles schools set limits on classroom screen time

Los Angeles schools set limits on classroom screen time

April 21 : Los Angeles’ school board on Tuesday passed a measure regulating students’ screen time during classroom assignments, reflecting concerns that technology could be linked to a host of ailments including obesity and depression. The school board of the nation’s second-largest school district approved the measure by a 6-0 vote with one recusal, making the Los Angeles Unified School District among the first in the nation to create systemwide, grade-by-grade limits on classroom screen time. “Along with the cellphone ban the L.A. Unified School District passed in 2024, we hope to be a national leader on these matters,” said board member Nick Melvoin, who sponsored the measure, through a spokesperson.  Proponents said the policy was meant to strike a balance between instructional needs and growing concerns that excessive screen exposure is harming students’ attention and social development. The district, which serves about half a million students, has relied heavily on laptops and tablets since the coronavirus pandemic of 2020 accelerated digital learning. “While access to and developing skills in technology are critical in a …

Breakthrough ion clock experiments reveal that time can go quantum

Breakthrough ion clock experiments reveal that time can go quantum

Time already behaves strangely in modern physics. It can stretch, slow, and split depending on speed and gravity. Now a new theoretical study pushes that weirdness into even stranger territory. It argues that time itself may carry quantum signatures that could soon be tested with some of the most precise clocks ever built. That idea sounds almost like science fiction. In everyday life, a clock ticks one second at a time, in one direction, at one rate. In relativity, that neat picture breaks down because motion changes how quickly time passes. A moving clock runs differently from one at rest, even if the difference is tiny. But quantum physics adds another twist, because motion itself can exist in superposition. With this, a particle can effectively occupy more than one state at once. Put those two ideas together and the result is startling. A clock whose motion follows quantum rules may not experience one clean flow of time. In principle, it could evolve along different time paths at once, ticking both faster and slower in a …

“We’re On Borrowed Time”: Vitol LNG Chief Warns Of Coming Food Price Shock

“We’re On Borrowed Time”: Vitol LNG Chief Warns Of Coming Food Price Shock

Pablo Galante Escobar, the head of liquefied natural gas (LNG) at Vitol, warned the audience at the FT Commodities Summit earlier today that the “world is on borrowed time” and that the Gulf energy shock will develop into a food crisis unless LNG flows resume through the Hormuz chokepoint. “We are on borrowed time. Every day this trade remains closed and every day production does not come back, we are building a problem for the future, and we are building a problem that, as I said, will be transferred from the energy side into many different sectors, with the food sector being a very important one,” Escobar said, who works world’s biggest independent energy trader. Escobar continued, “This is not sustainable, or the energy crisis will become a food crisis. Only gas can supply the feed for fertilizers. We are building a problem for the future.” He added that even if the Hormuz chokepoint reopened today, it could still take three to five months for undamaged LNG production to fully recover. Longer term, the Gulf …

Pope Francis’ legacy in time, one year after his death

Pope Francis’ legacy in time, one year after his death

VATICAN CITY (RNS) — Pope Francis will likely be remembered for his gestures: his lone walk under the rain in St. Peter’s Square to pray during the pandemic, his embrace of migrants, his unscripted phone calls and off-the-cuff remarks. But behind the images, the pontificate of Jorge Bergoglio was built on something quieter — “starting processes” as he would say, a strategy aimed not at immediate results, but at shaping the future of the Catholic Church long after his death. From church reform to episcopal appointments and a renewed focus on the peripheries, Francis planted seeds meant to outlast him. Halfway through Francis’ papacy, many observers — especially in a Western world accustomed to measuring leadership in terms of mandates, milestones and results — were wondering what the pope had actually accomplished during his pontificate. Despite fierce pressure from both progressives and conservatives, Francis made relatively few formal doctrinal changes. Those he did enact could be counted on one hand: revising the catechism of the Catholic Church to declare the death penalty inadmissible; repudiating the …

Tesla settles another wrongful death lawsuit, but not about Autopilot this time

Tesla settles another wrongful death lawsuit, but not about Autopilot this time

Tesla has settled a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of an 18-year-old passenger killed in a 116 mph crash in Fort Lauderdale. Plaintiffs alleged that a Tesla technician disabled a speed limiter without parental consent. The settlement, with undisclosed terms, was confirmed Monday just as jury selection was set to begin in Broward County court. The crash that inspired Tesla’s Speed Limit Mode The case stems from a tragic May 2018 crash that killed both driver Barrett Riley, 18, and his passenger Edgar Monserratt Martinez, also 18. A third passenger was ejected from the 2014 Tesla Model S and survived. Riley was traveling at 116 mph in a 30 mph zone along A1A in Fort Lauderdale when he lost control, slammed into a concrete wall, and the vehicle caught fire. After Riley received a speeding ticket for driving 112 mph in March 2018, his father James Riley had Tesla install a speed limiter …
