USA v Paraguay World Cup 2026 TV channel, live stream, kick-off time

USA begin their World Cup campaign in the early hours of Saturday morning as they face Paraguay in Los Angeles, California. The co-hosts qualified for the World Cup automatically and have appeared in eight of the last nine tournaments. They actually finished third in the first-ever World Cup in 1930, but their next best finish came in 2002 as USA reached the quarter-finals. Mauricio Pochettino is now in charge and he’ll be confident of getting out of Group D given their opposition is Paraguay, Australia and Turkey. Paraguay missed out on the last three World Cups after failing to qualify but when they last featured at a tournament, they reached the quarter-finals in South Africa in 2010. The South American side, who finished level on points with Brazil and Uruguay in World Cup qualifying, look to be in a straight shootout with Turkey to finish second behind USA in Group D. Atomic clocks may be powerful enough to detect the quantum fabric of time

Atomic clocks may be powerful enough to detect the quantum fabric of time

Time feels familiar. It marks every moment of daily life, from the ticking of a wall clock to the changing numbers on a smartphone screen. Yet despite its constant presence, time remains one of the deepest mysteries in science. For more than a century, physicists have known that time is not fixed. Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity showed that time can speed up or slow down depending on motion and gravity. The faster an object moves, or the closer it is to a massive object, the more differently it experiences time. But another revolution in physics, quantum mechanics, introduced an even stranger possibility. At the quantum level, particles can exist in multiple states at once through a phenomenon called superposition. If motion can exist in a superposition, then time itself may also flow in multiple ways simultaneously. Scientists have long wondered whether this bizarre idea is real. Until now, no experiment has been capable of testing it. Illustration of classical, semiclassical, and quantum proper time dynamics of a trapped-ion atomic clock that we consider. (CREDIT: …

Southern Baptists pass a ban on women pastors again. This time, they hope it sticks.

Southern Baptists pass a ban on women pastors again. This time, they hope it sticks.

ORLANDO, Fla. (RNS) — A proposal by the nation’s largest Protestant denomination to ban churches that have women pastors or let women preach on Sunday mornings passed overwhelmingly on Wednesday (June 10), marking the first step toward enshrining the ban in the Southern Baptist Convention’s constitution. Almost three-quarters (74.6%) of local church delegates, known as messengers, voted in favor of the so-called Truth and Unity Amendment during a Wednesday morning session of the SBC’s annual meeting. A quarter (25.09%) voted against the measure. Under the denomination’s rules, any change to its constitution must be approved by a two-thirds majority in two consecutive years. Two previous attempts to approve the ban had failed. Al Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, has said the ban will keep the SBC from getting too liberal.   “There’s a great line that divides liberal and biblical evangelicalism, and you can see it on this very issue,” said Mohler, who wrote and proposed the amendment. “The trajectory of liberal denominations is clear.” Thousands of people attend the …

Soaring gasoline prices, triggered by the U.S. war with Iran, have pushed inflation to its highest level in more than three years. A report from the Labor Department on Wednesday showed consumer prices in May were up 4.2% from a year ago. That’s the biggest annual increase since April of 2023. By contrast, the Labor Department says average wages have risen only 3.4% over the last year, so workers’ real spending power has declined. Prices rose 0.5% between April and May, with higher energy costs accounting for more than 60% of that monthly increase. Gas prices have jumped by well over a dollar a gallon since the war began, strangling shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz — a critical pathway for much of the world’s oil supply. Higher fuel costs also pushed up airfares in …

Fully autonomous drones have killed human soldiers for the first time

Drones are a common sight on the battlefields of Ukraine, but they are normally controlled by human pilots Frank Herrmann/Getty Images Fully autonomous drones with no human oversight have killed soldiers on the battlefield for the first time. This is according to a senior figure in the Ukrainian defence industry, marking a watershed moment in warfare. The one-off test involved 10 AI-controlled “Terminator” drones on the front line of the Ukraine war. Russian soldiers were killed. “We tried it,” says drone-maker Alexander Kokhanovskyy, who supplied the technology and spoke to New Scientist at a press event hosted by the Ukrainian embassy. “It’s a test. We never implemented it [more widely].” The test took place two years ago and involved quadcopter drones that were programmed to fly towards the front line, cover between 3 and 5 kilometres over around 10 minutes and then engage “Terminator mode”, in which an AI model searches for and intercepts targets. “We just launch it and we know everything will be dead – everything that will be found there in this …
