YUCCA VALLEY, Calif. — Tyler Gaul strode across the sprawling backyard of his Yucca Valley home and surveyed the rocky hillside a few steps away from the pool and basketball court that sit atop his 2-acre property. When he first moved to the desert from Los Angeles last fall, this jagged landscape granted him a sense of serenity as the crowded city he left behind grappled with a pandemic. Gaul, who runs his own skin care company, knew it was time to move when he could no longer exercise outside his Echo Park apartment — his respite from stay-at-home orders — because of wildfire smoke polluting the air. Constant and worsening wildfires, paired with a public health crisis, proved to be too much. Classic stories from the Los Angeles Times’ 143-year archive “I have a lung condition, and I was like, ‘No, I can’t do this anymore,’” he recalled. So he set out for the desert. Like many other city dwellers who have fled urban sprawl over the last year and a half, Gaul sought shelter in …
You probably already know the importance of applying sunscreen daily to protect your skin. But many people overlook how important it is to protect their lips, too. In addition to skin cancer, exposure to harmful rays can cause a precancerous condition called actinic cheilitis, colloquially known as “sailor’s lip,” that causes rough, scaly patches, says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Eileen Deignan. Chronic sun exposure can also damage the skin barrier around the lips and make your lips look aged and discolored, she says. Given these potential risks, experts I spoke to recommend using an SPF lip balm daily. To help guide you on your search, I spoke to dermatologists about how to shop for one and rounded up options that NBC Select editors use and love. Want more from NBC Select? Limekiln Canyon Park is an unexpected delight in an unlikely place: a raw, natural, open space in the midst of highly manicured gated housing developments in Northridge. Shady, lush and likely to have running water much of the year, it feels surprisingly remote for a location so close to civilization. Though it’s naturally shaded, go early in the day, especially in summer before the heat picks up. Start near the intersection of Rinaldi Street and Tampa Avenue near the park entrance and begin walking downhill on a broad path, past a grassy field and under the shade of oak, pine and even a few redwood trees. (Note the warning about rattlesnakes: another reason to keep your dog on a leash.) At the first Y intersection, just before you reach a creek on your left, leave the wide trail for a narrower one heading up to the right. Walk on, keeping the creek on your left. In the streambed, note the sycamore and willow trees, interrupted by the occasional incongruous fan palm. At the next Y, …

Every zombie fable boils down to insatiable hunger, both as it pertains to the undead and the forms it takes among the living. That part is where each story diverges. In George A. Romero’s 1978 masterpiece “Dawn of the Dead,” survivors took refuge in a mall, but they also hoarded its supplies. Zack Snyder’s contribution to the genre accentuates desperation. In his 2004 remake of “Dawn of the Dead” the zombies are sprinting, roaring killing machines that consume America before the opening credits roll. In their wake aftermath, hopelessness proves to be the slow, shambling, inescapable inevitability that does in everyone else. His latest, “Army of the Dead,” is not that film’s sequel. It could have been, since the main hero is a veteran of the so-called “zombie wars.” But the desperation evoked here is different, and relatable to everyone on the losing side of America’s expanding wealth gap. That describes almost everyone, including sidelined mercenary Scott Ward (Dave Bautista). With his friends Maria Cruz (played by Ana de la Reguera) and fellow soldier-for-hire Vanderohe …
“Tina Turner, the woman who taught Mick Jagger to dance, is on the prowl again.” This headline opens Carl Arrington‘s 1981 interview with her for People magazine, a feature Turner hoped would serve as her official coming out announcement. In “Tina” it is the dividing line in between her life as it was and the force she became. Forty years ago, however, Turner hoped that by opening up to People she could provide a definitive response to all the queries about her ex-husband Ike, the man who made her second billing on the Ike & Tina Turner Revue and subjected her to horrific physical abuse for years. Turner was ready to start her next chapter, a solo act to leave behind a past she desperately wanted to forget. When that story led to curiosity of a morbid nature, Turner tried to set the record straight again with her 1986 autobiography “I, Tina,” co-authored with journalist Kurt Loder. In the book’s 1993 cinematic adaptation “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” star Angela Bassett depicts the violence Tina …
My single favorite sound, if pressed to choose, would be crunching gravel on a hike. Hiking, for me, is a sensual experience. It starts the moment I step out of my car, whether that’s on a mountain road in the Angeles National Forest, in a parking lot at Debs Park or on a residential street in the Hollywood Hills. All of my senses immediately engage — call it “hiking foreplay” — while surveying the open vistas, or dusty switchbacks, or the forested path ahead; while tuning in to the chorus of birds, rustling tree leaves and, as I climb upward, my own rhythmic breathing; while inhaling the commingling scents of, say, wild fennel, sage and sweat. Even the dry air on my dehydrated tongue or my aching glutes on an especially long journey somehow add to the experience. The body responds, unfurling. The effect, no matter how rigorous the trek, is calming. Hiking, more than anything else, is what grounds me. Los Angeles is a mecca for hiking, if just because of the topographical diversity …
Last June in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, Amber Ruffin opened four episodes of NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” by telling stories about her own traumatizing run-ins with racist cops. In one she recalls an officer pulling her over and, for no reason, screaming at her until she burst into tears. At the time of this encounter, she was teenager. In another, the “Late Night” writer and host of “The Amber Ruffin Show” on Peacock recalls the time cops threatened her for joyfully skipping down an alleyway to meet a friend she hadn’t seen in a very long while. In yet another tale an officer tried to bust her for soliciting because she was sitting in a car with a male friend. Yes, that friend was white. No, they weren’t doing anything wrong. She wasn’t breaking the law in any of the other instances, either. I would love to say this goes without saying, but . . . it doesn’t. “Look, I have a thousand stories like this,” Ruffin shared with viewers. “The cops have pulled a gun on me. The cops have followed …
