Politics Home Article | John Healey Resigns As Defence Secretary Over Military Spending Plans

(Alamy) 3 min read1 hr John Healey has resigned as defence secretary warning that Keir Starmer’s military spending plans fall way short. Healey announced his resignation on Thursday, saying he had been “left with no other option” but to quit having been presented with details of how much additional money the government was planning to spend on defence. He singled out the Treasury for criticism, saying it was “unwilling” to “commit the resources that the nation needs to defend the country at this time of rising threats”. Following Healey’s resignation, Times Radio also reported that defence minister Al Carns has said the DIP is “not fit for purpose” and Starmer has “got to sort this out”. Healey is considered a Starmer loyalist and his resignation will be seen as a major blow to the Prime Minister. His letter said that Starmer had been “unable” to commit the necessary funding, raising fresh questions about his authority. The PM is fighting to stay in power amid the prospect of leadership challenges from Andy Bunham and Wes Streeting. The government is expected to …

‘Negotiate with bombs’: Hegseth defends second night of US strikes on Iran | US-Israel war on Iran News

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has confirmed that the United States is launching strikes on “key facilities” in Iran, framing the attacks as part of the ongoing negotiations for a permanent ceasefire. Hegseth spoke to reporters on Wednesday in Tampa, Florida, as he left the headquarters for the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees military operations in the Middle East and parts of Asia. Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list His remarks echoed the escalating rhetoric of Republican President Donald Trump, who warned earlier that Iran would “have to pay the price” for taking too long with the negotiations. “ CENTCOM – Central Command – will be busy tonight because President Trump said we will be hitting Iran hard, and we will be,” Hegseth said. He explained that he had just reviewed the plans for Wednesday night’s attack with Admiral Bradley Cooper, CENTCOM’s commander. “ Those strikes that’ll happen tonight will be strong. They will be clear,” said Hegseth, who then suggested they may continue into a second day. “If they have to happen tomorrow …

Trump Says “Secret Military Mission” Allowed 200 Ships, 100 Million Barrels To Cross Hormuz

Trump Says “Secret Military Mission” Allowed 200 Ships, 100 Million Barrels To Cross Hormuz

Confirming our reported from both a week ago (see “As Gulf States Plan Bypass Pipelines, US Military Is Quietly Helping Ships Cross Hormuz”) and this afternoon (“Growing Number Of Oil Tankers Successfully Sneak Through Hormuz, Shrinking Iran’s Leverage”) moments ago Trump posted on Truth Social that he had “directed our Great U.S. Military to execute a secret mission to support Oil Tankers and other Commercial Ships through the Strait of Hormuz.” Of course, the mission wasn’t that secret if we discussed how the US military was helping ship cross the Strait one week ago.  In any case, Trump added that “this effort has resulted in more than 100 MILLION Barrels of Oil making its way through the Strait, and into the Open Market. More than 200 Commercial Ships have safely traveled through the Strait,” which would explain why oil prices have remained low and confirms what Goldman’s Delta One head, Rich Privorotsky, wrote this morning, namely that “a lot has been thrown at the oil market and it’s simply not going up, which is remarkable given the …

Robots are about to overtake armed soldiers as the deciders of war

Robots are about to overtake armed soldiers as the deciders of war

Ukraine’s “Legit” unmanned ground vehicle OLEKSANDR KLYMENKO/Ukrinform/NurPhoto/Getty Images There’s a received piece of wisdom among militaries around the world that whatever new technologies appear, in the end, foot soldiers are what matters. As British Army officer Field Marshal Archibald Wavell put it shortly after the second world war: “All battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman.” This may now finally be changing. Robots in battle are about to reach a critical point for Ukraine. In May, it began the mass production of Legit, a low-cost robot capable of carrying a machine gun. This comes after announcing plans to replace a third of its infantry with uncrewed ground vehicles (UGVs) in one sector, despite their limitations. “Even imperfect systems become valuable if they absorb risk instead of soldiers,” says Oleksandra Molloy at the University of New South Wales in Australia. The most important proving ground for Ukraine’s robots will be the front line. It is there where casualties are most likely and where substituting machines for people is most vital. Yet, …

Does Trump have real leverage over Netanyahu — and could he use it? | US-Israel war on Iran News

Does Trump have real leverage over Netanyahu — and could he use it? | US-Israel war on Iran News

The latest flare-up in hostilities between Israel and Iran has exposed what some observers say is the most significant crack yet in the relationship between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and United States President Donald Trump, revealing increasingly divergent interests between the two leaders. But other analysts question whether the public friction between the two represents real frustrations on the part of the US — and whether Netanyahu’s apparent defiance of Trump suggests that Washington’s influence over Israel is more limited than is often assumed. Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list The pair once appeared politically inseparable, with Netanyahu describing Trump as the “greatest friend Israel has ever had in the White House”. Trump returned the praise. During a 2025 appearance in Israel, he joked, “He’s not easy – not the easiest guy to deal with – but that’s what makes him great.” Trump is no longer joking. Last week, he reportedly called Netanyahu “f***ing crazy” during a phone call, accused him of undermining US diplomacy, and warned that Israel’s military escalation risked …

Being Black in Pete Hegseth’s Military

Being Black in Pete Hegseth’s Military

Daniel “Chappie” James Jr. became commander of the Wheelus Air Base, near Tripoli, just after rebels under Muammar Qaddafi took control of Libya in a coup in 1969. In the midst of the insurgency, Qaddafi led an effort to break into the U.S. air base, but James managed to close the gate in time to prevent the young rebel from entering. The incident, which James recounted in a 1978 interview, would come to be the stuff of Air Force lore. As the two men confronted each other, the story goes, Qaddafi got out of his vehicle and reached for his gun. James had a .45 in his belt. He told Qaddafi that he’d better not pull the gun, or he’d regret it. They stared at each other for a moment as the future dictator considered James. Then Qaddafi pulled his hand away, got back in his vehicle, and drove off. The rebels never attempted a similar stunt again. One reporter later referred to James as a “black John Wayne.” Explore the July 2026 Issue Check …
