The cause and location of her death have not been shared, but one thing is certain: the world of graphic memoir has lost a giant. Satrapi’s best-known work, Persepolis, was published in the early 2000s and showed millions of readers the lives of everyday Iranians during the Islamic Revolution. As our Senior Editor Kelly Jensen stated, its blend of memoir, history, and stunning artwork has helped bring about our current, brilliant era of graphic memoir. President Emmanuel Macron’s office released a statement on the author’s influence: “Her passing marks the loss of a leading figure in French culture and a freedom-loving artist whose work carried a universal message and earned her immense international acclaim.” Five Publishers and Scott Turow Sue Meta and Mark Zuckerberg It’s likely that as …

Portable fans are a hot-weather staple. When I got married on a sweltering July day, one of my bridesmaids passed me a portable fan, which didn’t leave my side all day. So it’s no surprise that personal fans are coming back in even bigger ways this summer. Personal fans can be found for under $20, but this year, some big names in appliances are joining the trend. Dyson dropped its $99 personal fan, but not before Shark launched the ChillPill this year. Shark’s personal fan features the most unique and elaborate design of any personal fan. The best albums of the year (so far): Music to stop the doomscrolling

You, dear Salon reader, are discerning and responsible, ready to face the reality of the world we’re living in, for better or for worse. Unfortunately, that may result in feelings of anger, frustration, anxiety or hopelessness. It’s an unfortunate byproduct of caring deeply. This is precisely why we turn to art, which probes both truth and beauty: the enemies of doomscrolling. Music is perhaps the purest of these art forms, tapping into our lizard brains to regulate our emotions that are seeking to make sense of this precious yet maddening existence. That’s why your Salon writers and editors have gathered the best albums of the year (so far), all the better to soothe you with. A great song offers pleasure, but a great album – no skips – is a doorway. On the other side lies transformation. Sound possesses power, whether you’ll be weary from dancing or blissed out from the frequencies massaging your nerves. So crank up the Victrola, press play on Spotify and nestle into your headphones. These albums will keep you energized …

King Charles ‘could be paying £278k per year’ for Eugenie and Beatrice’s rent despite Andrew’s daughters being non-working royals

King Charles could be paying more than £278,000 per year to cover the rents of Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie’s accommodation in royal palaces, a valuer has estimated. Both Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s daughters are non-working royals, but maintain residences in St James’s Palace and Kensington Palace, according to a new audit published on Friday. The report, published by the National Audit Office (NAO), said the rents were discounted to around 60 per cent of open market prices because the Royal Household properties require tenants with security clearance. It did not reveal the figures the King is paying. It also found that for a number of years, these adjusted rents were based on out-of-date open market valuations. Princess Beatrice has a property in St James’s Palace, and Princess Eugenie has Ivy Cottage at Kensington Palace. Both of these are covered by the privy purse, which is King Charles’ private money, according to the report. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor received an undisclosed private income from subletting three cottages (PA) Robin Edwards, a property buying agent at Curetons, told The Independent the …

Food poisoning kills more than 1.5 million people a year, new analysis shows

Food poisoning kills more than 1.5 million people a year, new analysis shows

Rice is particularly vulnerable to heavy metal contamination because it is grown in flooded fields and readily absorbs contaminated water. South-East Asia and Africa, where regulations on heavy metals in farming are far less stringent, are the worst-affected regions. It is thought that roughly 1 billion people are regularly exposed to heavy metals via their food.  Bacteria also remain a major cause of food-borne illness and death.  In 2021, around 250,000 people died after consuming food contaminated with harmful bacteria, mostly through diarrhoeal disease.  Among the most common bacterial pathogens are Campylobacter and E. coli, which are frequently found in undercooked poultry, raw milk, and unwashed fruit and vegetables. Listeria, which grows mostly in unpasteurised dairy products – products that have boomed in popularity in ‘wellness’ circles in recent years – poses a particular risk to pregnant women and newborns.  While infections are usually mild in healthy adults, the bacterium can cause miscarriage, stillbirth and severe illness in infants.  In 2021, Listeria was responsible for 5,280 deaths, the vast majority among newborn babies. Parasites are another major cause …

Uber to put 500 data-collection vehicles on the road this year

Uber to put 500 data-collection vehicles on the road this year

Uber revealed on Wednesday a prototype car that it plans to use to scoop up real-world driving data for its growing roster of autonomous vehicle partners, including Avride, Waymo, and WeRide. The vehicle is not some radical design. Rather, it’s a Hyundai Ioniq 5 fitted with an incredible number of sensors on the top and sides, as the company first told TechCrunch back in January. The sensor-laden vehicle may not look particularly groundbreaking, but it does mark a few milestones for the company. This is the first vehicle Uber has assembled itself (with help from a partner) since the company sold its autonomous vehicle division to Aurora in 2020. It also represents progress on Uber’s new AV Labs division, which launched earlier this year to use sensor-equipped Uber cars to collect and then share data with its 30-and-counting autonomous vehicle technology partners. Uber said Wednesday that it plans to roll out 500 of these kitted-out Hyundai EVs globally this year. That fleet will be able to collect “2 million miles per month of high-fidelity data” …

Belmont Park Rebuild Nears the Finish Line as the Belmont Stakes Is a Year From Returning Home

NEW YORK (AP) — A stroll by the paddock at Belmont Park is a glimpse into the past before becoming a window into the future. The white pine tree that has stood there for more than two centuries remains. Around it, everything else is brand new. The racetrack that straddles the border of Queens and Long Island is smack in the middle of a massive $550 million reconstruction project that included knocking down the gargantuan brick grandstand and rebuilding a smaller, modern facility suited for horse racing in the 21st century. A year from now, the Belmont Stakes will return to its traditional home at Belmont Park after a three-year hiatus upstate at Saratoga Race Course to allow for the work to get done. “It’s hugely important to get it back to Belmont,” Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher said. “The opening of a new facility is something that can really give the industry a shot in the arm.” Aqueduct Racetrack will close to consolidate racing in New York to two locations after shiny new …

A year before the French election, De Gaulle remains politically fashionable

‘De Gaulle: Resistance’, is released in cinemas in France on June 3, the first part of a two-parter on Charles de Gaulle, the French general and statesman who led the Free French Forces against Nazi Germany and Vichy France. The much anticipated films took director Antonin Baudry and his team six years to make, with a budget of nearly 80 million euros. But even beyond the silver screen, with a year to go until the presidential elections, De Gaulle has perhaps never been so politically fashionable. Keywords for this article Source link

6 Zodiac Signs Are In The Luckiest Time Of The Year From Now To June 12, 2026

Between now and June 12, six zodiac signs are experiencing what may very well be their luckiest time all year. As professional astrologer Evan Nathaniel Grim explained in a video, this is because “over the next two weeks, Jupiter and Venus will be aligning in the sign of Cancer.” As the astrologer explained, “Jupiter and Venus carry mostly positive connotations in astrology.” Venus represents enjoyment and indulgence, making spending time with people we like seem very appealing. This energy can also “stimulate our creativity and help us attract resources,” Grim said. Meanwhile, Jupiter is the planet of luck and expansion, giving us a wider range of opportunities. When these two planets come together, luck usually follows. Both Venus and Jupiter are in Cancer, and they officially meet up on June 9. However, the lucky energy is already building up for these astrological signs. 1. Cancer Design: YourTango With the two luckiest planets in astrology making their way through your zodiac sign, you’re probably “glowing right now,” Grim explained. Your confidence is high, and you’re “attracting …
