The Kendall Jenner and Jacob Elordi Rumor Mill Lands in Tokyo

Now, a breakthrough. Portraying the couple at their best were not paparazzi, fans, or photographers hired for red carpets and covers, but cooks, waiters, and caterers. The first selfie was shared on the Instagram profile of Udon Shin, a restaurant in Tokyo. Jenner and Elordi sport matching looks, both in casual black t-shirts. The comments filled up with well wishes and surprise: “this is how i found out they’re dating???”; “the restaurant just made it official”; an imagined conversation between the two: “Hey babe do you wanna go to Hawaii for the beach and then get noodles in Japan after?” Then it was time for Seirinkan, another restaurant that shared photos with the two stars. In one they pose together with the owner of the restaurant; in the other they chat amiably with him. Again, the comments section filled up: “this is actually boots on the ground journalism !!” and “they are so aesthetically pleasing together.” There was no shortage of questions as to the authenticity of the images, with onlookers wondering if artificial intelligence …

(Photo by JAM STA ROSA / AFP via Getty Images) Jam Sta Rosa | Afp | Getty Images “Japan’s door to dialog is always open” to the international community even as it increases defense spending and revises its arms exports guidelines, according to defense minister Shinjiro Koizumi. Speaking at the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue, Koizumi said that Tokyo has consistently respected international law, adding that “Japan’s path as a peace-loving nation has been valued by the region and by the international community. This fact will not be shaken by false claims because it is a fact.” He also said about accusations Japan is engaging in “neo-militarism” that there’s “nothing further from the truth.” China’s defense ministry on May 28 had called on the international community to jointly contain Japan’s “neo-militarism,” according to state media outlet Xinhua. Japan has recently taken steps to expand its defense posture, including lifting its ban on lethal arms exports and mulling changes to Article 9 of its …

Hammer-wielding man attacks Tokyo teenagers: Reports

TOKYO: A man wielding a hammer wounded five people in Tokyo, including a teenager who was allegedly struck in the face, local media said on Thursday (Apr 30). Violent crime is rare in Japan, which has a low murder rate and some of the world’s toughest gun laws. The 44-year-old suspect, who is on the run from police, attacked two teenage boys near his house in Fussa city in the Japanese capital on Wednesday.  One victim sustained a severe facial injury, while the other suffered a minor shoulder injury, according to NHK and Kyodo News.  Police officers rushed to the scene, where the suspect sprayed them with an unknown substance and fled, Kyodo said.  Three officers were injured in the attack. Tokyo Metropolitan Police declined to comment to AFP on the case. Source link

Why Tokyo is the most important tech destination of 2026

Why Tokyo is the most important tech destination of 2026

Every major tech conference has themes. Most are vague enough to mean everything and nothing at the same time. SusHi Tech Tokyo 2026 is doing something different — four tightly defined technology domains, each backed by live demonstrations, dedicated exhibit floors, and sessions featuring the people actually building and funding these technologies globally. TechCrunch is partnering with SusHi Tech Tokyo 2026 as an official media partner, and our Startup Battlefield team will be on the ground selecting one standout semifinalist from the SusHi Tech Challenge to advance to the TechCrunch Disrupt Startup Battlefield 200 — one of the most prestigious launchpads in tech. Here’s what’s on the floor. AI — beyond the hype, into the infrastructure Sessions featuring Howard Wright (Nvidia), Rob Chu (AWS), and Eric Benhamou (Benhamou Global Ventures) cut through the noise to examine where AI is genuinely deployed at scale and where the real risks lie. On the floor, AI-themed university startups pitch alongside global players, and the AI Film Festival Japan, a partner event at Tokyo Innovation Base in Yurakucho, explores how artificial …

Chinese embassy urges Tokyo to probe threats against its diplomats

Chinese embassy urges Tokyo to probe threats against its diplomats

TOKYO: The Chinese embassy in Japan has accused Tokyo of failing to protect its diplomats after it received three threats within a month, as a spat between the Asian neighbours rumbles on. In a post on X on Thursday (Apr 17), the embassy urged Tokyo to “severely punish the perpetrators”, detailing incidents including an intrusion and a bomb threat. On March 24, a man described as a member of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces (SDF) broke into China’s Tokyo embassy and threatened to kill diplomats. This was, it said, just a few weeks after an intimidating letter from a self-described “elite unit” of former SDF and police members had arrived, threatening to kill Chinese people. A third incident at the end of last month involved an online bomb threat against the embassy by a person also claiming to be a former military officer. “We once again strongly urge the Japanese side to expedite the investigation to clarify the facts of the case” and “severely punish the perpetrators in accordance with the law,” Charge d’Affaires Shi Yong was …

When Suzuki met Suzuki: why a Tokyo dating agency is matching couples with the same name | Japan

When Suzuki met Suzuki: why a Tokyo dating agency is matching couples with the same name | Japan

At the very least, the three men and three women calming their nerves on a Friday evening at a venue in Tokyo know they have one thing in common. Spaced out across booths, they will soon be placed in pairs and given 15 minutes to get to know one another. “Let’s start with a nice ‘hello’ and a big smile,” the emcee says. When they meet they will only need to use their first names – because they all share the same surname. The event is the first in a series that – novelty value aside – aims to skirt Japan’s controversial ban on married couples having separate surnames by getting people with the same surname together. After the participants have confirmed their IDs on an app, the chatter begins and the beer begins to flow. Round one over, the men are asked to move to the next table. Laughter is heard from one of the tables – surely a good sign. At another, the couple get to their feet and help themselves to cakes …

Macron hails France-Japan ties after talks in Tokyo with PM Takaichi

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday that he shared Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s position on the need to restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, speaking alongside her on the second day of his visit to Tokyo. The two leaders were expected to discuss security and partnerships in the space sector, and planned to sign a roadmap on nuclear power in Japan, the Élysée Palace said ahead of Macron’s Asia trip, which will also include a visit to South Korea. The French president earlier praised Europe’s “predictability” during a meeting with Japanese business leaders, contrasting it with countries that “could hurt you without even informing you” in an apparent swipe at US President Donald Trump. Read moreMacron touts Europe’s ‘predictability’ during Japan visit in apparent swipe at Trump “I’m well aware that sometimes Europe can be seen as a continent that is slower than others,” Macron told the audience in Tokyo. “But predictability has value, and we have demonstrated that over all these past years and, dare I say, even these past weeks: we are where …

Pricier fuel hits Tokyo cherry blossom river cruises

Pricier fuel hits Tokyo cherry blossom river cruises

TOKYO, March 31 : A few dozen tourists hopped onto a small cruise boat in Tokyo to admire the cherry blossoms lining the Meguro River – a seasonal attraction that could soon become costlier for passengers and operators alike. The pink and white flowers that blossom in spring on cherry trees across Japan are a major draw for locals and tourists – and big business for companies such as cruise operator Tokyo Waterways. The “flower viewing” or “hanami” is the peak season of the year. This year, though, Tokyo Waterways CEO Kazuyoshi Harada is not so upbeat because the Middle East conflict has pushed up fuel prices just as his demand is rising. “Since fuel consumption for us peaks during the busy cherry blossom season, the price hikes have been particularly hard on us,” he said. Most customers booked their hanami-season cruises before the crisis, so raising ticket prices from 5,000 yen ($31) was not an option, he said. Since the U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran, the price of premium gasoline has surged by 20 yen …
