4 smart home devices that work much better on Zigbee or Thread than Wi-Fi

4 smart home devices that work much better on Zigbee or Thread than Wi-Fi

It can be overwhelming trying to keep up with all that you need to know about a smart home. There are tons of devices on the market ready to make your home more efficient and better prepared for modern times. You should be able to close your garage door from your phone if you happen to leave it open. There should be an alert that lets you know when someone rings your doorbell. There are many routes that you can go when you’re setting up your smart home in terms of the ecosystem and technology you want to support. You can choose to rely solely on one manufacturer’s products, such as Google, Samsung, or Amazon. You can also use devices that work within those frameworks as well, which are many. But many of those work best on Wi-Fi, which can clog up your network. Options like Z-Wave, Zigbee, and Thread can circumvent your Wi-Fi and create their own network, freeing up the bandwidth. There are certain devices that work best under these circumstances. Related Most …

Pope Leo gets ride home from king of Spain after plane’s engine fails

SAN CRISTÓBAL DE LA LAGUNA, Spain — For Pope Leo XIV, it pays to have friends in high places — especially earthly ones. Shortly after Leo closed his seven-day trip to Spain on Friday with an outdoor Mass in the Canary Islands, off the northwest coast of Africa, he arrived on board his chartered Iberia flight back to Rome. A few moments later, a dejected captain announced a system failure on board, and in no time, Spain’s King Filipe VI, who has been shadowing the first U.S.-born pontiff, boarded the plane and personally whisked Leo off as journalists in the back gaped. Pope Leo XIV’s flight home from Spain was grounded so the king came to his aid

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Spain (AP) — Even popes have travel delays. Lucky for Pope Leo XIV, King Felipe VI offered a way out, and a way home. Leo’s Iberia charter, due to take him back to Rome after a weeklong visit to Spain, was grounded by a technical problem Friday, prompting Spain’s king to offer his private jet instead. Felipe escorted Leo to his Falcoln on the tarmac at the airport in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the Canary Islands. Leo and members of his delegation boarded the plane, more than three hours after he was originally due to leave. The glitch marked an unusual end to an otherwise successful trip to Madrid, Barcelona and the Canary Islands. Leo pressed his migration message and also inaugurated the new tower of the Sagrada Familia basilica. The Iberia pilot said the engine had failed to start after Leo had boarded. Initial efforts to fix it failed, forcing all passengers to disembark. Iberia said it was sending another plane from Madrid to fetch the Vatican officials and …

Le Labo Now Sells Incense. I Tried Them

Le Labo Now Sells Incense. I Tried Them

No matter what city I find myself in, I end up unwittingly playing a silent olfactory game: Name that Le Labo terroir. There was a steady period in the 2010s when San Francisco’s Mission District smelled like weed, dog pee, and Santal 33. Not long after that, I would walk through corners of Brooklyn that oozed street trash and Rose 31. Lately, I’ve been to restaurants in Los Angeles where it smells like everyone passed around a bottle of Thé Matcha 26 to pair with whiffs of the fragrant jasmine lining the streets and a glass of funky orange wine. All that is to say, Le Labo fragrances are rarely just about the fragrance itself—they are also about the cultural context in which you smell them. The brand’s latest product debut, a trio of incense based on some of its beloved signature fragrances, fits neatly into that logic. The smell of your living room is just as important as any statement couch or wall art when it comes to signaling your perspective and taste at …

Politics Home Article | Armed Forces Minister Resigns Over Defence Spending

Armed Forces Minister Al Carns has resigned over the government’s plans on defence spending. (Alamy) 3 min read2 hr Armed Forces Minister Al Carns has resigned over the government’s plans on defence spending and its Northern Ireland Legacy Bill, claiming “the deal this country makes with the people who serve it” is “broken”. In a letter to the Prime Minister, the former marine said the proposed Defence Investment Plan (DIP) was not good enough, stating it “is neither transformative enough nor sufficiently funded”, adding that “a serious country funds its defence to meet the threat it actually faces, not the threat it wishes it faced”.  “I have sat in the rooms, seen the assessments, and spoken to the commanders who will be asked to do more with less, and I cannot in good conscience stand at the dispatch box and defend a level of investment I know to be inadequate to the task,” wrote Carns. Carns was also critical of the Northern Ireland Legacy Bill, describing it as “unfit for purpose” …

Politics Home | Healey Resignation Is “Colossal Failure Of Government”, Says Former Labour Defence Secretary

John Healey resigned on Thursday over Starmer’s plans for military spending (Alamy) 4 min read2 hr A former Labour defence secretary has warned Keir Starmer that his credibility “will be shot” if he doesn’t rethink military spending plans in the wake of John Healey’s resignation. In an interview with PoliticsHome, Lord Hutton, who was defence secretary between 2008 and 2009 under former Labour prime minister Gordon Brown, described Healey’s resignation on Thursday as a “colossal failure of government” and said that the UK should be “ashamed”. Healey, a major Starmer loyalist, announced his resignation from cabinet earlier today, warning that the government’s planned military spending is not enough to keep the country safe. He singled out the Treasury for criticism, saying it was “unwilling” to “commit the resources that the nation needs to defend the country at this time of rising threats”. Responding to the news, Hutton said Healey’s resignation “represents a colossal failure of government over the last period of time” and that the Starmer administration had “completely failed” to respond to growing global threats to UK security. The …
