Alice and Steve writer reveals inspiration behind Nicola Walker comedy

New Disney+ comedy series Alice and Steve asks a simple question: how would you react if your best friend started dating your adult daughter? For creator and writer Sophie Goodhart, the idea came from asking the same question of herself, when speaking with her own friend. “The germ of the idea came from me talking to one of my best male friends, and we were joking in a very inappropriate way about, ‘Oh my god, can you imagine if you dated my daughter?,” Goodhart explained. “And immediately it was like, ‘Oh, we should do a show about it, we should call it a wrong-com.’ He’s not a writer, and he’s not in telly, so I say ‘we’ very… but anyway.” Goodhart was speaking to us as our latest guest for The Radio Times Writers’ Room, in which we get to know what makes screenwriters tick. It may be time to consider a paradigm shift — a move away from the pursuit of happiness to a life of inspiration. The word happy was defined in the late 14th century as “good luck” and “feeling very glad.” Let’s take a closer look. The Shortcomings of Pursuing Happiness It’s difficult to pursue “good luck.” Happiness is a joyous feeling that arises from a fortunate event. The idea of pursuing happiness doesn’t seem viable. The price for prioritizing happiness. Once happiness is viewed as the way to be, other aspects of the human condition are easily frowned upon. The implication is that there’s something wrong with us if we’re not happy. Anger, sadness, loss, melancholy, grief, and desperation are given a short shelf-life with the mandate to get back to happy as soon as possible. Life goes misunderstood. Months before Obsession took the box office by storm with terrifying visuals and Inde Navarette’s star-making performance as a terrifyingly possessive girlfriend, its 26-year-old director admitted that the idea for the film came as a surprise during a hangout with his friends. What happens when a nun and a Catholic priest fall in love? Channel 4’s Falling, billed as a “contemporary romantic drama”, grapples with that very question. The six-part series, written by Adolescence’s Jack Thorne, stars Keeley Hawes and Paapa Essiedu as two people who are both “deeply committed to their work in the church and in their community” when they unexpectedly develop feelings for one another. “Both are forced to wrestle with what it means for them, their vows, and their relationship with God,” reads the official synopsis. Jay-Z discovered the work of Chicago-born artist Rashid Johnson—whose paintings, installations, and photographs often represent Black intellectual life—about a decade ago, says Johnson, when the hip-hop mogul was assembling his personal art collection. The admiration was mutual. “Jay’s music, lyricism, and sophistication are very much in line with a lot of interesting and historically important Black thinkers,” says Johnson, who places Jay-Z in a lineage alongside Harold Cruse, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Michael Eric Dyson. Johnson’s own fascination with Black intellectualism began when he was a child, sparked by a copy of Cruse’s 1967 work The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual perched on his mother’s bookshelf. (The volume later appeared in the artist’s 2024 solo Guggenheim exhibition, Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers, a multidisciplinary showcase on Black consciousness.)
