USDA Details Billion Farm Aid Package Favoring Rice, Cotton; Soy Farmers Warn of Strain

USDA Details $12 Billion Farm Aid Package Favoring Rice, Cotton; Soy Farmers Warn of Strain

By P.J. Huffstutter and Julie Ingwersen CHICAGO, Dec 31 (Reuters) – The U.S. Department ‌of Agriculture released details on Wednesday about how ‌much row crop farmers will receive next year from a $12 billion aid program, but soybean growers say such payments fall short of helping those hurt by low crop prices and trade disputes. The Farmer Bridge Assistance program is ‍expected to distribute $11 billion in one-time payments to farmers, who will be paid on a per-acre rate if they planted one of the 19 commodity crops identified as being eligible for the program, USDA said in a statement on Wednesday. U.S. farmers produced massive corn and soybean harvests this fall amid a global glut of grain, and lost billions of dollars amid falling crop prices. Soybean farmers were particularly hard hit by the loss of soybean sales to China, by far the world’s top buyer, when it turned to South American suppliers during ‌stalled trade talks. While the aid is expected to help farmers prepare for the next planting season, growers and agricultural economists …

AWARE’s new executive director, DEI expert Lim Shoon Yin, takes over as Corinna Lim steps down

Women’s rights group Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE) saw a change in leadership on Jan 1, 2026. Corinna Lim, 61, is stepping down after 16 years as AWARE’s executive director. She is succeeded by Lim Shoon Yin, 50, a diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) expert. Corinna Lim will remain in an advisory role for six months before fully handing over leadership. Founded in 1985, AWARE conducts research and advocacy on issues affecting women in Singapore, including workplace discrimination and sexual harassment, the poverty faced by older women and Singapore’s compliance with United Nations standards on gender equality. Corinna Lim, who is a lawyer by training and has a master’s degree in public administration from Columbia University, joined AWARE as a volunteer in 1992, providing pro bono legal counselling to women dealing with workplace harassment and domestic abuse. She recognised how women from underprivileged backgrounds suffered as they could not afford legal advice. She eventually left corporate law to focus on women’s rights work, later serving as AWARE’s honorary secretary in 2006 before becoming its first …

Keeping Your New Year’s Goals Without Breaking the Bank

Keeping Your New Year’s Goals Without Breaking the Bank

People head into the new year with renewed energy to explore fitness and wellness trends. While the excitement of beginning new goals and habits remains strong, some people can quickly feel discouraged when they see the price tags associated with new fitness trends. However, there are ways to save and splurge as the new year approaches. You can start by thinking about expanding your definition of fitness. Nowadays, when people think about fitness, they are not just thinking about physical fitness. They think about mental health, emotional resilience, and general life satisfaction (Chekroud et al., 2018). For example, when you set your physical fitness goals, include mental health goals (recognize and identify the positive way you feel post-workout), practice emotional resilience (give yourself grace if you miss a workout), and determine how your physical fitness goals will increase your overall life satisfaction (like a stronger ability to play with your grandchildren). The following goal setting steps and budget-friendly tips, paired with physical fitness, can help you develop well-rounded goals. Consider New Trends People will continue …

Trump admin sued for halting work on the US’s largest offshore wind farm

Trump admin sued for halting work on the US’s largest offshore wind farm

Photo: Dominion Energy Dominion Energy is suing the Trump administration after the US Department of the Interior ordered five offshore wind projects currently under construction to stop offshore work on December 22 – including Dominion’s 2.6 gigawatt (GW) Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW), the largest offshore wind farm in the US. CVOW has been under construction since early 2024 and was scheduled to come online in early 2026. It’s capable of providing enough clean energy to power about 660,000 homes. Dominion said it has already spent around $8.9 billion on the $11.2 billion project, and its customers are footing the bill. Additionally, Virginia has become a hub of data center growth, making its energy needs urgent. At the center of the dispute is a typical Trump administration claim, ie, vague, thin on evidence, and released at an awkward time (right before Christmas this time): offshore wind turbines could pose “national security risks” based on “recently completed classified reports” because their spinning blades and reflective towers can create radar “clutter” – interference that can generate false targets or …

Energy Dept. orders Colorado to waste millions to reopen a dead coal plant

Energy Dept. orders Colorado to waste millions to reopen a dead coal plant

The Department of Energy ordered Colorado coal plant to stay open for three months, one day before it was set to close. The coal plant will require tens of millions in repairs to get up and running again, and its retirement was expected to save Colorado ratepayers $79 million per year. Coal is a dead energy source. It’s costly, inefficient, and deadly both for workers and for all species on Earth alike. For these reasons, coal has seen a rapid decline in the US, as the country shifts to significantly better power sources. Coal peaked at around half of US electricity supply in the early 2000s, but has been dropping precipitously since around 2008. Now, coal is only 15% of US electricity supply, and that number will keep dropping. There is no point to opening new coal plants, because they’re enormously expensive, and it’s getting worse. This is why almost all of new US capacity this year has been solar or wind generation. Advertisement – scroll for more content But that hasn’t stopped republicans from …

I tried the cheapest ChatGPT subscription — here is what you actually get

I tried the cheapest ChatGPT subscription — here is what you actually get

AI subscriptions come a dime a dozen, but few match up to what the best in the industry can offer. While most AI services like Perplexity and Gemini offer tiers starting at $20, ChatGPT has introduced a new Go tier starting at just $5 for basic access. Now you can stack free AI chatbots so you never pay a cent for AI, but usage limits will still hamper your progress after just a few prompts. $5 a month is quite competitive considering subscription pricing from the competition. So I tried ChatGPT Go, and here’s what you actually get for your money. Going from Plus to Go The real differences aren’t as dramatic as they seem Yadullah Abidi / MakeUseOfCredit: Yadullah Abidi / MakeUseOf I’ve been a ChatGPT Plus subscriber in the past, dropping $20 monthly on the power-user experience any time I needed it. When Go launched, the price difference was hard to ignore. Considering it’s a 75% price drop, I decided to downgrade and see if I’d immediately regret it. The transition itself was seamless. …
