A recent survey by the Pew Research Center highlighted widespread public concern over the facilities’ environmental harms, effects on home energy costs, and the quality of life of nearby residents. The council’s chambers became overwhelmed with a crowd of almost 100 people during the April 10 meeting, which hosted a debate over a proposed 12-month moratorium on data center construction in the area inspired by …

A watered-down ‘buffer zone’ bill passes NYC Council

(RNS) — The New York City Council passed a bill Thursday (March 26) calling for buffer zones around places of worship in an attempt to protect them from rowdy protesters. But the bill that passed with a solid majority, 44-5, with one abstention, was a watered-down version of what Council Speaker Julie Menin initially called for. The bill, which had been much discussed after a November protest was held outside a prominent Manhattan synagogue, directs the New York Police Department to present a plan to the mayor and the council within 45 days, explaining how the city will use “security perimeters” to help safeguard houses of worship. Menin, who is Jewish, had originally called for secure buffer zones of up to 100 feet outside of houses of worship. But Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch raised concerns that the bill would restrict the police’s ability to determine the size of the necessary buffer zones. Others raised free speech concerns and said a buffer zone law would only serve to intimidate those fighting for Palestinian human rights. The bill …

Jordan Linden, 30, was convicted of 10 offences – including five sexual assaults, stalking and sexual communication – following a trial at Falkirk Sheriff Court. Linden, who stood down as leader of North Lanarkshire Council in 2022 after the allegations came to light, was placed on the sex offenders’ register ahead of his sentencing in May. The offences took place over a 10-year period between 2011 and 2021. Police Scotland said all of the victims were either boys or young men, with the youngest aged just 14. The force said Linden, who also chaired the Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) between 2015 and 2016, sexually assaulted two victims at a house party following a Dundee Pride parade in 2019. Linden was charged in February 2024. Detective Chief Inspector Diane Barr said: “This was a protracted investigation which involved speaking with a broad range of people, many of whom regarded Linden as being in a position of trust. “He abused this …
