Volvo updates its electric semi truck lineup with up to 700 km range

Volvo is expanding its electric trucking lead with the launch of new and improved line of FH, FM, and FMX Electric HD and semi trucks with up to 700 km (~430 miles) of range. The next-generation Volvo FH, FM, and FMX Electric trucks feature Volvo’s new e-axle driveline technology, which the company says offers major improvements in flexibility, productivity, and driving comfort – along with enough increased efficiency to offer more than 400 miles of range in long-haul highway trim. “This long-haul electric truck is the best in the industry,” says Roger Alm, President Volvo Trucks. “It offers an outstanding range in combination with high payload, fast charging and great riding comfort. With this truck, our customers can drive the really long distances and throughout an entire working day with the same productivity as diesel trucks.” The headliner Volvo FH Aero Electric; via Volvo Trucks. At the heart of the lineup’s new updates is the new, compact Volvo e-axle that integrates a pair of electric motors and a six-speed, efficiency-enhancing gearbox into the trucks’ drive axles. …

Watch this Harbinger electric van chase down package thief [video]

With some 440 hp and nearly 1,200 lb-ft of instant electric torque on-hand, the Harbinger electric delivery van is more than capable of keeping up with modern day traffic. To show off just how capable it is, Harbinger’s marketing team has put together this fun, fictional, high octane voltage chase scene. Electric vehicles have been redefining the high-performance driving scene since the first Tesla Model S drag raced a Corvette on YouTube. Now, as that model drives off to the big garage in the sky, a whole new wave of next-generation of EVs is coming to stake their claim to the outgoing Model S’ high-powered heritage – and that wave seems to include Harbinger’s all-electric commercial delivery vans. That seems to be the message in this recent, Harbinger-produced video, anyway, which highlights the trucks’ rapid acceleration, powerful electric motors, and tight turning radius in a fun, frantic commercial (yes, it’s a commercial). Workhorse slashes prices by ,000 as Purolater buys 100 vans

Workhorse slashes prices by $60,000 as Purolater buys 100 vans

Commercial fleet operators scrambling to electrify in the face of rising diesel prices can buy a Workhorse W56 step van for nearly $60K less than before – and Ohio-based Purolator is taking advantage of the deal with a stout, 100-unit order. Electric fleet truck brand Workhorse first announced plans for a more affordable, 140 kWh version of its medium duty electric work truck last month. Now, the company is making the 210 kWh versions of its trucks more affordable, too, cutting $59,000 from its 178″ Standard Wheelbase and $61,000 from its 208″ Extended Wheelbase W56 vans through September. That’s a deal being made even sweeter by soaring gas and diesel prices – sweet enough, it seems, for Ohio-based delivery and logistics firm Purolator to place an order for 100 of the zero-emission box trucks. “Purolator has a longstanding commitment to adopting new and innovative technologies to make their fleet more efficient and sustainable, and we are honored to continue to support them,” said Scott Griffith, chief executive officer at Workhorse. “This is Purolator’s fourth order over a …

electric articulated haul trucks reach production [video]

electric articulated haul trucks reach production [video]

In a move that Volvo is calling a world’s first, the company has begun regular production of its new A30 and A40 Electric model articulated haul trucks – making the first time electric articulated haulers of this size have moved from a pilot stage into serial production. First shown at last year’s Bauma construction show, the game-changing Volvo A30 Electric articulated hauler promised promised to be both the first vehicle of its kind in what is both a key industrial segment for Volvo and a milestone for BEVs once it reached production. Now, that time has come. “Starting serial production of electric articulated haulers of this size is a proud moment for Volvo CE,” explains Melker Jernberg, President of Volvo CE. “It shows that our ambition to lead the transformation of our industry is backed by real execution. This milestone proves that electric solutions are ready to meet the demands of heavy, high-productivity applications, and that meaningful change is underway.” Rolling down the line A30 Electric assembly line; via Volvo CE. RAM 3500 driver switches to EV, and the savings are SHOCKING

RAM 3500 driver switches to EV, and the savings are SHOCKING

How much can drivers really save by trading their ICE truck for an EV? One driver parked his trusty 2023 RAM 3500 diesel and drove a new 2026 Chevrolet Silverado EV for a few days — and his real-world fuel savings are impossible to ignore. America is full of rural communities that are miles away from its major cities, both geographically and culturally – but that doesn’t mean these more sparsely populated regions can’t reap the benefits of electrification. In fact, EVs offer rural drivers even more benefits than they do to city-dwellers. That’s truer than ever these days, with diesel prices climbing past $6.00 per gallon in many parts of the country (and approaching $8 in parts of California), it’s more expensive than ever to haul sailboat fuel around town in a big pickup truck. “Diesel is sitting around roughly $6.00/gal. on average,” writes Robert Wallace, a certified energy manager and self-proclaimed rural energy innovator. “My [2023] RAM [3500] gets about 17 MPG, which means every time I drive a mile it’s costing me $0.35.” This week, though, Wallace got …

Orange EV electric terminal tractors clean up in Canada

Orange EV electric terminal tractors clean up in Canada

GLS Canada has become one of the first major parcel and freight carriers in the country to deploy heavy-duty electric yard hostlers at its logistics terminals – and they’re helping the company clean up in a big way. The Canadian logistics firm has deployed several Orange EV HUSK-e Class 8 terminal tractors at its Montreal, Toronto, and Winnipeg locations in a move that takes a big step toward decarbonizing logistics operations across its national network. The move reflects a shared vision between GLS Canada and Orange EV to accelerate decarbonization in logistics. “We are proud to integrate four Orange EV electric shunters into our fleet in Montreal, Toronto, and Winnipeg,” said Mélanie Camara, Director of Sustainability at GLS. “This investment is part of our decarbonization journey in line with the Science Based Targets initiative and reflects our continuous commitment to reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency, and building a decarbonized operation for our employees, customers, and communities.” GLS claims that each of its new HUSK-e trucks will eliminate an estimated 80 to 90 tons of CO₂ compared …

Port of LA turns to electric terminal trucks to to slash dwell times

Port of LA turns to electric terminal trucks to to slash dwell times

APM Terminals has been electrifying its operations at the Port of Los Angeles over the last few years – and they’ve been able to effectively decarbonize and cut their fuel costs substantially. Those efforts have yielded another unexpected benefit, too: they’ve slashed truck idle times at the port by almost 85%. With short runs at low speeds under heavy loads in a controlled space, heavy-duty terminal tractors represent an almost ideal use case for electrification. APM Terminals Pier 400 did that math and came to the same conclusion, adding twenty new Orange EV yard dogs to their fleet at the Port of Los Angeles. Along with other decarbonization and efficiency investments, that purchase has helped the company reduce truck dwell times from an average 90 minutes to just 35. The pier has found big wins by making the whole truck-and-cargo flow less “wait your turn,” and more “keep it moving” with the addition of green lanes for ZEVs, tighter gate operations, and by pairing electrified equipment and its superior uptime with new, better rail and yard …

What does a home solar + battery + EV setup look like in real life?

What does a home solar + battery + EV setup look like in real life?

You’ve finally got the full trifecta – a rooftop solar panel system feeding a home backup battery that charges your EV. Heck, you’ve even got a bidirectional EV that can send power back to the house when you need it. Now the real question: are you actually saving any money? Last week, microgrid expert and GM Energy employee Jim Reilly took to LinkedIn to share his personal experience with a whole home electrification setup that includes both a GM Energy home backup battery and a GMC Sierra EV powered by electrons generated by his rooftop solar array – and he’s coming out way ahead. “Lots of discussions on how tensions in Iran threaten a gas price surge,” writes Reilly, in his original “Energy Dominance” post. “The cost of a ‘full tank’ of gas is unpredictable. Here’s my math on a ‘full tank’ so I can check in on this in a few months, to see if these numbers spread even further, driving more people to an electric vehicle.” ⛽ Gas (24 gal at $4/gal): $96 per fill-up.🔌 Public …

All-new electric Ford Transit City is ready to deliver big savings

All-new electric Ford Transit City is ready to deliver big savings

Designed with an eye towards helping cost-conscious contractors and delivery fleets, the all-new Ford Transit City electric van is the perfect tool to navigate the challenges of clean air zones, rapidly rising fuel costs, and increasingly strict neighborhood noise restrictions while still delivering for their customers. The electric Ford eTransit work van is a pretty well-known commodity, but the newest generation of Transit City vans from Ford Pro ditch both the “e” designation and the internal combustion options, following the new Toyota Highlander‘s lead and launching a whole new era of blue oval-branded commercial vehicles. Designed around a 56 kWh from its lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery sending power to a 110 kW (~150 hp) electric motor driving the front wheels, the new Ford Pro Transit City electric work trucks offer commercial customers range of up to 254 km (~160 miles). While not exactly impressive compared to today’s bladder-busting Lucid Air or China’s more advanced range-max EVs, 160 miles nevertheless works out to more than double the distance Ford Pro’s commercial customers report needing. Workhorse steps up with a more affordable electric step van

Workhorse steps up with a more affordable electric step van

Workhorse is once again pushing back on affordability concerns and high fuel prices with the introduction of a new, more affordable configuration of the company’s W56 Step Van electric delivery vehicle. A number of independent service and third-party logistics providers (ISPs and 3PLs) have consistently reported that 100 miles of daily range substantially exceeds their needs for many of their routes – and the 210 kWh battery pack fitted to the Workhorse W56 delivery van is serious overkill. That’s where the new, 140 kWh Workhorse comes in. Priced at “just” $169,000, the new 140 kWh W56 Step Van ships in the company’s “Standard” 178″ wheelbase configuration with Workhorse’s purpose-built composite body, and offers an estimated nominal range of 100 miles per charge at its full, 10,000 lb. payload capacity. “The new 140 kWh version of our W56 step van is a result of listening to customer feedback and purpose-building a product to meet their needs,” said Scott Griffith, CEO of Workhorse. “We’ve been able to balance the functional needs of fleets – range, durability, reliability and …
