MNAC in Barcelona Has Yet to Follow a Court Order to Return Murals

MNAC in Barcelona Has Yet to Follow a Court Order to Return Murals

Nearly a year after Spain’s Supreme Court ruled that the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC) must return the Sijena Monastery murals to the Royal Monastery in Aragon, in northeastern Spain, the Barcelona museum still hasn’t let go of the disputed—and delicate—13th-century artworks. The ruling, in May 2025, followed more than a decade of legal battles between the Aragonese government and MNAC. The Sijena murals—often referred to as the “Sistine Chapel of Romanesque art”—were removed from the monastery in 1936, after it was set on fire during the Spanish Civil War. They were restored by MNAC, transferred to canvas, and have been on view there, controversially, since 1961. The museum was able to reconstruct the lost parts on the murals using photographs taken before the fire. Related Articles A museum spokesperson told The Art Newspaper that the murals still haven’t been returned due to “technical arguments.” The museum is concerned that moving them to an environment that is not climate-controlled (as they currently are, in a sealed section of MNAC’s Oval Hall, which is also …

Pope Leo has spoken. Now other faith leaders must follow.

(RNS) — Pope Leo was on an airplane headed for Algeria to begin a two-week tour in Africa when he was asked to respond to Trump’s attacks. Leo’s position was clear: Enough of war. God rejects the prayers of leaders who wage violence. The path forward must be negotiation, ceasefire and dialogue. His focus has remained on the human cost — lives lost, families displaced and communities destroyed. Without papal processes, authorizations, approvals or official editing, Leo answered Trump’s attacks saying: “I have no fear of either the Trump administration, or speaking out loudly of the message of the Gospel … ‘Blessed are the peacemakers’ is a message that the world needs to hear today.” In the 1930s, German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer once described confronting the tyranny of Hitler as standing in the path of a speeding car driven by a madman and said the church needed to find ways to stand in front of the madman’s car. Pope Leo’s airplane comments now serve as a model for faith leaders and communities to respond when …

The Met is Treating Lee Krasner as Pollock’s Equal—Will Market Follow?

The Met is Treating Lee Krasner as Pollock’s Equal—Will Market Follow?

Editor’s Note: This story originally appeared in On Balance, the ARTnews newsletter about the art market and beyond. Sign up here to receive it every Wednesday. The Metropolitan Museum of Art says its upcoming exhibition, “Krasner and Pollock: Past Continuous,” is a “story of equals.” Set to open in October, the survey brings together 120 works  by more than 80 lenders, with an explicit focus on considering Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner “on their own terms” while also placing them in relation to one another.  Related Articles That is the museum’s version of the story. But the art market’s version is harsher, simpler, and much more familiar: Pollock remains one of the great trophies of 20th-century art. Krasner, his wife, widow, and interlocutor, and one of the most formidable painters of the New York School, still has to fight for every inch of price recognition. The price gap between these two long dead artists is sizeable: Pollock’s auction record sits at $61.2 million, while Krasner’s is just under 20 percent of that figure, at $11.7 million, set at Sotheby’s in 2019 …

EU industry chief says Europe won’t follow the US on China – POLITICO

EU industry chief says Europe won’t follow the US on China – POLITICO

Séjourné said the bloc was trying to reduce its dependence on China in strategic sectors, while still maintaining a level of openness, something he said was in Europe’s “DNA.” The Commissioner was the driving force behind the Industrial Accelerator Act — a piece of legislation that is currently in negotiations — and which would partially shut China out of European public procurement, as well as set more onerous ownership obligations when it makes large European investments. Commenting on Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s upcoming trip to China on Saturday, Séjourné said that “all leaders, for many years now, have been going to China.” “I think it’s a good thing to talk and to keep discussing with China,” he added. Jason Crow (D-Colo.) on Tuesday urged U.S. service members to “follow the law” if directed to strike Iranian civilians targets, after President Trump issued a dire threat to Iran earlier in the day. “Well, it’s a war crime. It’s a very clear war crime,” Crow, a former Army Ranger who served in Afghanistan and… Source link

Trump Administration Bans Chinese Routers. Phones and Cameras Could Follow

The Federal Communications Commission continued its crackdown on Chinese tech on Friday, issuing a new proposal that would extend a ban on companies to products previously authorized. In 2021, companies such as Huawei, Hikvision, Dahua, Hytera and ZTE were added to the FCC’s Covered List, a record of companies and products that the FCC believes pose a national security risk to the US, under the Secure Networks Act. The Chinese companies produce mobile phones, security cameras and other tech products. But the 2021 ban applied only to new models that the FCC hadn’t authorized, and companies were free to keep selling models that had already received the FCC’s stamp of approval. If approved, the new proposal would ban these companies entirely, including those previously approved products.  “Older models of covered equipment pose an unacceptable risk today when imported or marketed in the United States, not only when such equipment is new to the market,” an FCC report from October said. The proposal will be open for comment until May 6, after which the commission will vote on whether …

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.’s new “MAHA” dietary guidance. While the Trump administration’s January guidelines promote eating animal meat and full-fat dairy products, new guidance released by the American Heart Association calls for more plant-based protein sources. And despite Kennedy’s pledge to end what he claimed was a “war” on protein and saturated fats, the AHA says people should still choose low-fat or fat-free dairy products and replaced saturated fats with sources of unsaturated fats, such as nuts, avocados and seeds. The new guidance is aimed at lowering Americans’ risk of cardiovascular disease and other chronic health conditions, the AHA, which is supported by 30,000 scientific, medical and healthcare professionals, said. More than half of American adults have some type of …

In El Paso, two Catholic sisters follow detained immigrants wherever ICE takes them

In El Paso, two Catholic sisters follow detained immigrants wherever ICE takes them

EL PASO, Texas (RNS) — On their spreadsheets, down the list on their prayer table and off their tongues after a long day of ministry roll the names — of the man who is slowly but unsteadily regaining his grip on reality after being deported to Cuba, of the woman facing deportation to Brazil after more than a year in detention fighting for asylum, of the son whose mother fell to the floor screaming “take me instead” as he was detained at immigration court. Carlos was the name that launched Scalabrinian Sisters Leticia Gutiérrez Valderrama and Elisete Signor’s pastoral response to President Donald Trump’s mass deportation efforts. Gutiérrez Valderrama met Carlos on a trip last year to witness the increased immigration agent presence at immigration court, and he looked “like he had won the lottery,” she recalled, when she offered to accompany him. “He was the instrument for us to develop the ministry accompanying migrants at the courts,” Gutiérrez Valderrama told parishioners at a volunteer recruitment event at St. Francis of Assisi Parish on March …

Starmer Makes His Decision Not To Follow Trump Into War A Selling Point Ahead Of Local Elections

Starmer Makes His Decision Not To Follow Trump Into War A Selling Point Ahead Of Local Elections

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer speaks as he attends the Joint Expeditionary Force JEF Leaders’ Summit in Helsinki, Finland, Thursday March 26, 2026.  Keir Starmer has taken an indirect jab at Donald Trump while launching Labour’s local elections campaign. Despite spending the first year of the president’s second term bending over backwards for Trump, the prime minister is now celebrating the distance between himself and the White House after it chose to bomb Iran. Starmer has permitted US troops to use military bases for defensive and limited strikes on Iran, but refused to let American soldiers use the same sites for pre-emptive attacks. Some fear that Iran may not differentiate between granting permission for defensive and offensive strikes. But, Trump has continually slammed the UK government repeatedly for not immediately assisting him with his operation in the Middle East. Despite this strain in the “special relationship”, the PM even made his distance from the White House a selling point  Without directly mentioning Trump, Starmer claimed he would stand by his values “whatever the pressure and whoever …
