King Frederik of Denmark pays tribute to wife Queen Mary in rare emotional speech during glittering banquet

Queen Mary and King Frederik of Denmark were dressed to the nines in full regalia as they attended a State Banquet in Canberra during their official visit to Australia over the weekend.   The couple has travelled Down Under for the first time since becoming King and Queen in 2024, following the abdication of Frederik’s mother, Queen Margrethe.  On Sunday, they were received by the Governor-General at Government House, with Mary, 54, wearing her Ole Lynggaard Brooch in her hair, which featured pavé-set diamonds within a design of gold leaves. The striking heirloom is often worn in place of a tiara at high-profile state events.  During the banquet, both the King and the Governor-General gave speeches, with Frederik sharing a rare public tribute to his wife.  He recalled the early days of their romance, after meeting in Australia at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 in a pub called the Slip Inn, saying he remains “forever grateful” for her move across the world to make their relationship work. The annual Commonwealth Day service will be held at Westminster Abbey on 9 March and will be led by King Charles and Queen Camilla. The monarch will also be joined by the Prince and Princess of Wales, the Princess Royal, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, and over 1,000 other guests. During the service, Geri Halliwell-Horner, who is the Royal Commonwealth Society ambassador, will address the congregation. A reflection will be read by Oti Mabuse, and a poem from Commonwealth Poet Laureate Selina Tusitala Marsh will also be recited. Queen Mary and King Frederik of Denmark pulled out all the stops on Wednesday night as they attended a glittering state banquet in Lithuania.  The royal couple are currently on a two-day visit to the country, and joined President Gitanas Nauseda and his wife, Lithuania’s First Lady Diana Nausediene, at the Presidential Palace in Vilnius for the glamorous occasion.   Queen Mary, 53, looked elegant as ever in a floor-length, long-sleeved burgundy gown by designer Elie Saab, complete with cape detailing, pinning King Frederik’s portrait order to the front.  She added the stunning Diamond Necklace Tiara, believed to be a personal favourite of the monarch, as she bought it herself at auction in 2012 from the Bruun Rasmussen house in Copenhagen. Zara Tindall and her husband, Mike Tindall, have been in Australia for the last few days for the various events hosted by Magic Millions on the Gold Coast, and, as the country is dead in the middle of summer, it means we’ve been getting an early look at the 44-year-old’s iconic warm weather wardrobe.
