Dido and Aeneas review – young Welsh talent shines bright in Purcell | Opera

Mid Wales Opera undertake their OpenStages productions with a positively missionary zeal, nurturing both their local communities and up-and-coming singing talent. So full marks – if not the full five stars – to them for this staging of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, realised remarkably over a single intensive week of work. Given the way the composer tailored his 1689 opera for the ladies of Josias Priest’s boarding school in Chelsea, it was an entirely appropriate choice. A motley crew of amateurs formed a chorus variously portraying Carthaginian courtiers, followers of a witches’ coven and sailors. Well-schooled in the characteristic physical gestures and movements, with singing similarly ranging from lusty roistering to sadly sober, they gave it their all. The greater vocal polish came from the young cast, some already launched on singing careers, all handled with the utmost care by conductor Jonathan Lyness, notably in his accompaniment to their recitatives. Director Richard Studer was also the designer of the starkly simple but highly effective set: against a backdrop at the west end of the cathedral, …

Neurodivergent Job Interviews: Why AuDHD Talent Is Being Filtered Out Of The Hiring Market”

Neurodivergent Job Interviews: Why AuDHD Talent Is Being Filtered Out Of The Hiring Market”

Since last July, Edward James Herath, a brand and strategic comms consultant, has taken part in more than 120 job interviews. The feedback is often the same: he’s “too direct,” “too honest,” “abrupt,” or “confrontational.” Herath, 39, who is diagnosed with autism and ADHD (AuDHD), believes his literal and questioning demeanor is costing him jobs. He finds interviews particularly difficult because of their “indirect, passive-aggressive, and theatrical communication style,” he tells HuffPost UK. He believes they measure how he performs under pressure rather than his ability to do the job, and his real self – someone who cares deeply about his relationships and career – doesn’t come across. “There’s a strong emphasis on reading between the lines and softening language,” he says. For someone who values clarity, that’s a difficult tone to strike. Hearth is by no means alone in this struggle. Research suggests neurodivergence is widely seen as a barrier to employment. A 2024 Zurich survey of 1,000 neurodivergent adults in the UK found more than half believed recruitment processes were designed to filter …

TechCrunch Mobility: Who is poaching all the self-driving vehicle talent?

TechCrunch Mobility: Who is poaching all the self-driving vehicle talent?

Welcome back to TechCrunch Mobility, your hub for the future of transportation and now, more than ever, how AI is playing a part. To get this in your inbox, sign up here for free — just click TechCrunch Mobility! Normally, I have an analysis and then a little bird (my insidery bits curated just for you). But today I am combining them because I simply have too many little birds talking to me about the new talent wars. About seven years ago, the founder of a self-driving vehicle company told me that competing with the likes of Waymo for talent was “like a knife fight.” Now it seems there is a new poaching war going on, according to a handful of little birds. And it’s pushing base salaries (not including equity and other benefits) to between $300,000 and $500,000.  Here’s what is happening. The buzzy physical AI sector is filled with robotics and defense tech companies looking for people with a specific set of skills (to quote Liam Neeson). And these folks are mostly working at …

Stephen Graham shows off hidden talent in rare video with lookalike son – and fans are up in arms

Stephen Graham shows off hidden talent in rare video with lookalike son – and fans are up in arms

Golden Globe winner Stephen Graham thrilled internet users as he showed off surprisingly impressive dance moves on TikTok with his son, Alfie.  The 52-year-old star of Netflix hit Adolescence shimmied and bopped along to the sound of R. Kelly’s song, ‘Freaky In The Club’, and proved he was a cool dad as he outdanced his youngest child.  Stephen shared his silly side with social media as he bumped hips with Alfie, 19, who he shares with his wife, Hannah Walters, also 52, and laughed with his child, hopping on one foot out of frame.  The actor and his lookalike son were dressed similarly for the dance session in cuffed baggy tracksuit bottoms and branded sports T-shirts, Stephen’s in navy while Alfie wore khaki green. The teenager also covered his face with a black baseball cap.  Alfie posted the video to his TikTok account without a caption, and fans rushed to the comment section to share praise for the star’s dance moves.  One said: “Stephen Graham having moves wasn’t on my 2026 bingo card, I wasn’t ready…,” …

The One Skill A Clinical Psychologist Says Matters More Than A Kid’s Grades, Talent, Or Confidence

The One Skill A Clinical Psychologist Says Matters More Than A Kid’s Grades, Talent, Or Confidence

One of the major underlying issues that I see plaguing clients is rigidity. They find it very difficult to be flexible about change, which is a tremendous problem, as change is constant. Here are some examples of inflexibility and the inability to change your perspective when needed. Parents who find it difficult to allow their kids to have more independence as they get older People who cannot get back on track after a breakup or divorce, and assume that they will be single forever People who base their entire identity on a certain career path, and cannot conceive of any other option, even if they are actually miserable in this career Couples who feel stuck in their unhappy marriages and cannot see any possibility for change, like in depressed marriages Teenagers who lose a friendship and cannot believe that it would be possible to make other friends Young adults who are unhappy with how dependent they are on their parents, but think they are too weak or ineffectual to function independently (financially or emotionally) When …

6,500 teachers aim will require a broader talent pipeline

6,500 teachers aim will require a broader talent pipeline

Schools are missing out on a vast pool of untapped talent by thinking rigidly about where teachers come from, says Leyla Palmer The long-awaited schools white paper presents the sector with lots of opportunities. Education secretary Bridget Phillipson references this as a “once in a generation chance for change”. However, when it comes to the government’s bold pledge of 6,500 additional teachers, simply turning up the dial on traditional recruitment campaigns will not fill our classrooms. If we are to genuinely deliver on the “attract” pillar of the government’s plan, the sector must completely dismantle the traditional barriers to entry. We cannot rely solely on the conventional university pipeline. We must fundamentally rethink where our future teachers might come from and meet them where they are. Magic of teaching The solution to the recruitment crisis sits at the very desks in our classrooms. We need a “full circle” philosophy. We should not be waiting until young people are in their final year of university to pitch teaching as a career. The mission must start earlier. …

Tesla’s head of customer experience leaves for Coinbase as talent exodus grows

Tesla (TSLA) has lost another senior leader as Jose del Corral, the automaker’s head of product for customer experience, announced today that he is leaving after almost eight years to join Coinbase. Del Corral’s departure lands on the same day as yet another Cybercab production leader’s exit, extending a talent drain that has now stripped Tesla of institutional knowledge across virtually every critical function of the business. Del Corral joins Coinbase to lead customer experience Del Corral announced his move on X, writing that he will lead customer experience at the crypto exchange. He called Coinbase one of “very few companies” with the chance to “help rebuild the financial system from the ground up.” During his nearly eight years at Tesla, del Corral rose from senior manager of digital experience to head of product for the automaker’s entire customer experience operation. His scope covered the digital touchpoints — app, web, and in-store — that Tesla relies on more heavily than any traditional automaker because it sells directly to consumers without a dealer network. Let Kids Be Kids? The Ethics of Maximizing Children’s Talents

Let Kids Be Kids? The Ethics of Maximizing Children’s Talents

Sam is fourteen years old. He spends hardly any time with friends or family. Every day, before or after school, or both, and every weekend, he trains and competes in matches. He rarely goes to social events; he doesn’t even walk home from school with friends. He keeps up with his schoolwork, but he has little interest in it, and his academic performance is below average. Instead, he dreams of being a footballer. “Sam” could be any one of thousands upon thousands of children who aspire, and often are pushed, to achieve success as professional athletes. Their lives, and often the lives of their parent(s), revolve almost entirely around this goal. It is standard for these children to practice for sixteen or more hours a week, with many hitting the mid-to-high twenties. A notable recent trend is that this is happening at an earlier age. A standard Saturday for a pair of seven-year-old twins involves playing three ice hockey games and training for two hours at four different ice rinks. At a prestigious under-twelve ice …

The Top Gear star, 65, set up the group thinking the choir would be him and “two cows honking tunelessly through Kumbaya”. However, it has developed into a “glorious gathering of brilliant people and beautiful voices representing the beating heart of rural Britain”, he said. One choir member, Katryna Shell, said she hoped that Clarkson would join them on the stage to perform in front of judges Alesha Dixon, KSI, Amanda Holden and Simon Cowell’s stand-in Stacey Solomon on Saturday night (21 March), due to his surprisingly tuneful voice. “We’d love something like that. He does actually sing as well, believe it or not. We have heard Jeremy sing. I won’t divulge further. “I’ll leave that up to you as to the tone …
