Electric vehicle owners could earn thousands by supporting power grid

Electric vehicle owners could earn thousands by supporting power grid

Electric cars could make their owners money while they sit idle Maskot Bildbyrå At least 90 per cent of the electricity generation being built today is renewable. But solar and wind farms produce electricity only when the sun is shining and the wind is blowing, so the power supply will fluctuate more. A pilot project in the US state of Delaware has shown that owners of electric vehicles (EVs) could make thousands of dollars each year by allowing their parked cars to serve as part of a giant collective battery that stores electricity when there is high supply and distributes it when there is high demand. Some data suggests that the average EV is driving as little as 5 per cent of the time. Otherwise, it is often parked and plugged into the grid. This means that, rather than building giant battery farms, electric companies could balance the grid by drawing power from these cars when usage peaks in the morning and evening, then recharging them during the day, says Willett Kempton at the University …

TechCrunch Mobility: Who is poaching all the self-driving vehicle talent?

TechCrunch Mobility: Who is poaching all the self-driving vehicle talent?

Welcome back to TechCrunch Mobility, your hub for the future of transportation and now, more than ever, how AI is playing a part. To get this in your inbox, sign up here for free — just click TechCrunch Mobility! Normally, I have an analysis and then a little bird (my insidery bits curated just for you). But today I am combining them because I simply have too many little birds talking to me about the new talent wars. About seven years ago, the founder of a self-driving vehicle company told me that competing with the likes of Waymo for talent was “like a knife fight.” Now it seems there is a new poaching war going on, according to a handful of little birds. And it’s pushing base salaries (not including equity and other benefits) to between $300,000 and $500,000.  Here’s what is happening. The buzzy physical AI sector is filled with robotics and defense tech companies looking for people with a specific set of skills (to quote Liam Neeson). And these folks are mostly working at …

Santiago | Getty Images U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents shot a man in California on Tuesday, after he allegedly “weaponized his vehicle” and tried to run over an officer, according to the acting director of ICE. The ICE agents were conducting a targeted vehicle stop in the Central Valley town of Patterson to arrest Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez, who is allegedly a member of the 18th Street Gang wanted in El Salvador for questioning in connection to a murder, according to authorities. That gang is based in Los Angeles and has more than 100,000 members, according to federal authorities. “As officers approached the car, the wanted gang member weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run an officer over,” said Todd Lyons, the acting director of ICE, in a statement. “Following their training, our officers fired defensive shots to protect themselves, their fellow agents, and the public,” Lyons said. “The illegal alien was taken to a local hospital.” “The FBI is on …

First Hydrogen expands deal to advance next-generation unmanned ground vehicle

First Hydrogen expands deal to advance next-generation unmanned ground vehicle

The updated Letter of Intent (LOI) grants the company exclusive worldwide rights to develop and commercialise a patented unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) designed for both autonomous and remote operations. An unmanned ground vehicle is a land-based robotic system that operates without an onboard human, relying on remote control or autonomous navigation. These systems are increasingly used in security surveillance, military operations, hazardous environments, and material handling. AI is reshaping unmanned ground vehicle capabilities Artificial intelligence is playing a central role in the evolution of unmanned ground vehicle systems, particularly in defence applications. Systems that once focused on passive monitoring are now being developed as active, responsive platforms. Advances in AI are enabling sensor fusion, real-time target recognition, and autonomous response capabilities. This is becoming increasingly relevant as drone swarms and high-speed aerial threats drive demand for faster, more adaptive ground-based support systems. Hybrid-powered UGV designed for all terrain The UGV under development will use a hybrid energy system combining solar, battery, and hydrogen fuel cell technology. This configuration is intended to provide extended runtime, low …

Trump Admin Sues California To Block Electric Vehicle Mandate

Trump Admin Sues California To Block Electric Vehicle Mandate

Authored by Kimberley Hayek via The Epoch Times, The Justice and Transportation Departments filed a lawsuit against California on Thursday to stop what they say is an illegal electric vehicle (EV) requirement, alleging that the state is mandating fuel economy standards that federal law places in the exclusive domain of the federal government. Attorney General Pamela Bondi and Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced the lawsuit, which was filed for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The suit takes aim at regulations formulated by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), which mandates automakers comply with stricter mileage standards. CARB has implemented stringent rules, such as the Advanced Clean Cars II act approved in August 2022, which requires that 35 percent of new vehicles sold in the state must be zero-emission starting in 2026, gradually increasing to a complete ban on new gas-powered car sales by 2035. The Clean Air Act bans states from establishing their own tailpipe emission standards for trucks and cars. However, California can get an exemption to the ban if it …

Nuro is testing its autonomous vehicle tech on Tokyo’s streets

Nuro, the Silicon Valley-based startup backed by Nvidia, Uber, and SoftBank, is testing its autonomous vehicle technology in Japan. Toyota Prius vehicles equipped with Nuro’s self-driving software — and human safety operators behind the wheel as backup — began testing on public roads in Tokyo last month. The testing marks the first overseas expansion for the startup, which upended its business model two years ago. Nuro said testing in Japan introduces a number of new challenges and different driving styles and rules. For instance, vehicles drive on the left side of the road, and Tokyo’s streets have dense traffic. Road signs and lane markings are also different in Japan. The company, which opened offices in Tokyo last August, did not disclose how many test vehicles are in its fleet or when it might remove the human safety operator from the vehicles. The company did suggest, in a blog post announcing the testing in Japan, that there will be future expansions. “Our autonomous operations in Tokyo are the beginning of the compounding benefits of global deployment,” …
