EU accused of wasting €20B on AI computing dreams – POLITICO

The aim is to build four to five mega facilities, each powered by 100,000 graphics processing units (GPUs), a type of chip used to train AI models. They would be four times the size of the AI Factories and rival some of the world’s leading projects, such as OpenAI’s Stargate data center in Norway.  The projects will be funded by combining public and private investment, and the EU has set up a €20 billion fund to back the plans from its side. A total of 76 bids to establish 60 sites across 16 countries were filed during an informal sense-check by the Commission last year, with established companies such as French Scaleway among them. “This demonstrates an emerging substantial market demand,” the Commission’s Regnier said. As an early pledge, the Commission in 2024 announced plans to build 19 AI-focused supercomputers across 16 countries. | Nicolas Economou/NurPhoto via Getty Images Efforts are ongoing to merge and finalize some of those bids and to iron out the practical details between EU countries that support the bids and the vehicle …

Google Cloud surpasses B but says growth was capacity-constrained

Google Cloud surpasses $20B but says growth was capacity-constrained

Google Cloud, the business under parent company Alphabet that provides enterprise AI solutions, had a blowout first quarter, with revenues topping $20 billion for the time, a 63% increase from the same period last year. However, investors were concerned about the constraints surrounding the business and how Google decides to allocate cloud capacity. In the first quarter of 2026, the company said its cloud growth was driven by strong performance in the Google Cloud Platform, which grew at a higher rate than the Google Cloud division’s overall revenue growth. (The Cloud division includes a variety of services like infrastructure, data analytics, AI/ML tools, and Google Workspace.) Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai told analysts on the Q1 2026 earnings call on Wednesday that this growth came from “strong demand” for Gemini Enterprise and its AI solutions, and pointed to an increased demand for infrastructure, including TPU hardware and data centers. AI solutions were the largest driver of cloud growth, with products built on Google’s generative AI models growing nearly 800% year-over-year. Google Gemini Enterprise also grew 40% …

US Army announces contract with Anduril worth up to B

US Army announces contract with Anduril worth up to $20B

The U.S. Army said late Friday that it has signed a 10-year contract with defense tech startup Anduril. The deal could be worth up to $20 billion. According to the announcement, the contract starts with a five-year “base period,” with the option to extend the deal for an additional five years, and it includes Anduril hardware, software, infrastructure, and services. The Army describes the agreement as a single enterprise contract consolidating what had been “more than 120 separate procurement actions for Anduril’s commercial solutions.”  “The modern battlefield is increasingly defined by software,” said Gabe Chiulli, the chief technology officer at the Department of Defense’s Office of the Chief Information Officer, in a statement. “To maintain our advantage, we must be able to acquire and deploy software capabilities with speed and efficiency,” Anduril was co-founded by Palmer Luckey, who was previously known for selling VR startup Oculus to Facebook (now Meta). Facebook fired Luckey after controversy erupted following a news report that he’d donated to a pro-Trump political group. Luckey has repeatedly insisted that the media …

NVIDIA Groq Licensing Explained, B Deal Reshapes AI Chips

NVIDIA Groq Licensing Explained, $20B Deal Reshapes AI Chips

What happens when a tech giant like NVIDIA, already dominating the AI hardware space, makes a bold $20 billion move to license innovative technology from an ambitious startup? Matt Wolfe breaks down how NVIDIA’s licensing agreement with Groq, a deal that’s anything but conventional, could reshape the future of artificial intelligence hardware. This isn’t your typical acquisition story; instead, NVIDIA has sidestepped regulatory hurdles by opting for a licensing approach, gaining access to Groq’s innovative language processing unit (LPU) technology and its top talent. But with this strategic maneuver comes a wave of questions: Will this deal stifle competition or accelerate innovation? And what does it mean for the employees caught in the middle of this high-stakes game? In this guide, we’ll explore why Groq’s LPUs, capable of processing AI models up to 10 times faster while consuming far less energy than traditional GPUs, are such a fantastic option. You’ll also uncover how NVIDIA’s calculated strategy positions it to outpace rivals like Google in the race for AI dominance. Yet, the story doesn’t end there, …
