Government prepares to sue Roman Abramovich after he missed deadline to release £2.5bn from Chelsea sale | Politics News

Sanctioned former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has been put on notice that legal action is coming from the UK government after failing “to do the right thing” and release the £2.5bn from the club’s sale to help Ukraine. There has been a standoff since Mr Abramovich was forced to sell Chelsea in 2022 after being sanctioned at the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in a targeting of oligarchs. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer warned in December that Mr Abramovich could be sued if he does not pay up. Now a government spokesperson has said: “We gave Roman Abramovich his last chance to do the right thing. Once again, he has failed to make the donation he committed to. “We will now take further steps to ensure that the promise he made at the time of the Chelsea sale is kept.” The government issued a licence in December permitting the release of the cash to a new foundation for humanitarian causes in Ukraine but it required Mr Abramovich’s approval which has not come. The …

The football world waits for Manchester City verdict after Chelsea fined for ‘deception’ of Abramovich era | UK News

How did Chelsea dominate in the Roman Abramovich era? In part with players, the Premier League has now concluded, signed involving financial deceptions. How were they able to avoid a points deduction and accept a fine – albeit a record £10.75m – that they won’t even need to pay themselves? An explanation is provided in a tranche of league documents that casts a further cloud over the Abramovich ownership that transformed the club’s fortunes. Across eight years, more than £47m in secret payments were made related to transfers, including to unregistered agents, and concealed on behalf of the club by entities associated with Mr Abramovich. There was, the league said, “deception and concealment in relation to financial matters”. Image: Chelsea have been handed a one-year transfer ban, suspended for two years. None of the players are accused of wrongdoing or knowing about the payments. In the period central to …

‘Tory Frontbencher Representing Roman Abramovich Must Drop Russian Oligarch – Or Resign’

‘Tory Frontbencher Representing Roman Abramovich Must Drop Russian Oligarch – Or Resign’

Over the Christmas break, it emerged that the Shadow Attorney General and key Kemi Badenoch ally, Lord Wolfson, is also working as counsel to Roman Abramovich on extensive litigation in Jersey. This raises huge red flags about Lord Wolfson’s conflict of interests. But even more seriously, it asks profound questions about Conservative Party policy on Russian assets and the war in Ukraine. The Conservatives’ approach so far has been to ignore, misdirect, and hope this issue goes away. But it won’t go away, because it’s too important. It is also simple. Either Lord Wolfson carries on representing who he likes as a private lawyer, as he is entirely within his rights to do – or, he serves on the Conservative Party’s front bench. Wolfson has not made a choice between these two incompatible options. He wants to do both. And Badenoch’s willingness to let him is an abdication of leadership. Without any answers, we can only come to the conclusion that the Conservative Party is now prioritising Roman Abramovich’s litigation over the Ukrainian war effort. …

Labour Criticises Tory Frontbencher Over Abramovich Ties

Pressure is mounting on a senior Tory who is representing sanctioned Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich in court. Shadow attorney general Lord Wolfson is part of the former Chelsea owner’s legal team in a dispute with the government of Jersey about more than £5.3 billion of his frozen assets. Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK government following Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Labour says the legal dispute is holding up attempts to transfer the money Abramovich made from the sale of Chelsea to the victims of the war. Justice minister Jake Richards told Times Radio that Lord Wolfson being part of Abramovich’s legal team while also sitting on the Conservative front bench “could not be a clearer conflict of interest”. He said: “It’s perfectly reasonable for him to represent Roman Abramovich or he can act as shadow attorney general. But he cannot do both.” Tory leader Kemi Badenoch has not commented publicly on the row since it broke. A government source told HuffPost UK: “It’s been nearly a week since it was revealed …

Tory shadow minister accused of ‘conflict of interest’ over Abramovich case | Politics News

Labour has accused the Conservative shadow attorney of a “conflict of interest” after it emerged he is acting as a lawyer for Roman Abramovich, despite UK sanctions against him. Justice minister Jake Richards told Sky News Lord Wolfson needs to “do one or the other” – serve Kemi Badenoch on her shadow front bench or work for Mr Abramovich. The Russian businessman is caught up in a legal battle with the Jersey government after it launched an investigation into the source of more than £5.3bn in assets linked to him which are held there. According to several reports, the legal action is said to be delaying the release of funds from Mr Abramovich’s sale of Chelsea FC, which the UK Government wants to see used to help rebuild Ukraine after the war ends. The Tories said Lord Wolfson is not instructed on the matter of Chelsea FC and branded Labour’s attack “pure politics”. But speaking to Sky’s political correspondent Mhari Aurora, Mr Richards said the story “stinks to high heaven” and Ms Badenoch, the Conservative …
