USA Rare Earth Actively Pursuing Acquisition Opportunities Around The World

At the Semafor World Economy forum, USA Rare Earth CEO Barbara Humpton explained that the company is actively pursuing acquisition opportunities worldwide across the entire critical minerals supply chain. This includes everything from extraction and refining to magnet production. Highlighting the company’s international strategy, she pointed to a recent agreement to acquire a stake in Carester, a rare earth processing firm based in France, in partnership with French investor Infravia, according to Semafor.  Speaking in Washington, DC, Humpton noted that this move will soon enable the company to establish a processing operation in Europe capable of supplying both European and Asian markets. She emphasized that the company’s priority is to secure the highest-quality assets available, regardless of whether they are located within the United States or abroad. Humpton also revealed that USA Rare Earth is preparing to begin metal production at its facility in Stillwater, Oklahoma. This site is expected to become the first fully integrated rare earth metal and magnet manufacturing operation in the Americas. Semafor writes that meanwhile, in January, the Trump administration …

SEND: Schools ‘actively discourage’ applications

Two in five leaders believe schools in their area “actively discourage” applications from pupils with SEND, with poorer pupils entitled to support underrepresented at top-performing schools. The Sutton Trust has called on government to address disincentives to schools being more inclusive. Its research found the proportion of pupils at top-performing schools who are eligible for both free school meals and SEN support – which does not require an education, health and care plan – was lower than across their catchment areas more broadly. The secondary schools were ranked by their progress 8 and attainment 8 scores as well as the percentage of pupils achieving grade four or above in English and Maths GCSE. Growing gaps Analysis showed pupils who were both FSM-eligible and receiving SEN support made up 3.6 per cent of the populations of top secondary schools, compared to 4.9 per cent in their catchment areas. The gap is even bigger at schools that had the best outcomes for English and Maths. At these schools, 2.8 per cent of pupils on average were both …

Actively open-minded thinking protects against political extremism better than liberal ideology

Actively open-minded thinking protects against political extremism better than liberal ideology

A recent study published in the journal Thinking & Reasoning has found that a specific type of open-mindedness is a better predictor of healthy reasoning than simply identifying as a political liberal. The research suggests that while open-minded thinking and liberal ideology often overlap, they are fundamentally different psychological traits. The findings help clarify how people process information and resist political extremism, regardless of their political party. Actively open-minded thinking is a cognitive style where a person intentionally seeks out information that contradicts their own beliefs. People who score high in this trait tend to tolerate ambiguity, avoid jumping to conclusions, and willingly revise their opinions when presented with new evidence. It involves temporarily stepping back from your own assumptions to objectively evaluate a complex situation. “This study was conceived after finishing my book on myside bias, The Bias that Divides Us. Writing that book was a reminder about how politicized many areas of psychology had become,” said study author Keith E. Stanovich, emeritus professor of applied psychology and human development at the University of …

New research suggests the “lying flat” lifestyle actively decreases long-term happiness

New research suggests the “lying flat” lifestyle actively decreases long-term happiness

A study in China found that young people who adopted the “Lying Flat” lifestyle—a passive attitude characterized by giving up efforts and goals in order to relieve competitive pressure—tend to report lower satisfaction with their lives. Interestingly, this passive attitude predicted lower life satisfaction later, but life satisfaction did not predict future adoption of this lifestyle, indicating that it is the “lying flat” attitude that leads to diminished life satisfaction. The paper was published in Behavioral Sciences. The “Lying Flat” phenomenon, known in Chinese as tang ping, is a social trend that emerged in China as a quiet form of resistance to intense work and social pressures. It refers to the decision of some young people to withdraw from competitive career striving and material ambition. Instead of pursuing promotions, property ownership, or marriage at all costs, individuals adopting this stance aim to meet only minimal living needs. It describes a personal rejection of societal pressures to overwork and over-achieve. Literally, tang ping refers to a person lying flat on their back, with the whole body …
