Lisa Kudrow on ‘The Comeback’ Finale, Saying Bye to Valerie Cherish

Lisa Kudrow on ‘The Comeback’ Finale, Saying Bye to Valerie Cherish

[This story contains major spoilers from the season 3 and series finale of The Comeback.] That’s a wrap on Lisa Kudrow as Valerie Cherish — forever. The Comeback aired episode 8 of the HBO Max’s third and final season Sunday night as Cherish bowed out at the end of an eventful episode that welcomed surprise guest stars Bradley Whitford, Adam Scott and Justin Theroux and saw Cherish tangle with NuNet boss, played by Andrew Scott, over the future of her career and the fate of her show How’s That?! It was an eventful and historic run, too, as The Comeback is the only show in TV history to have three seasons each separated by a decade. “The most respectful thing we can do for the audience and for the character is make it a three-part story. It’s a trilogy, and this is the end,” Kudrow told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year when she sat for a cover story ahead of the return. That ending was an emotional one, too, as Kudrow said goodbye to …

Adam Scott Auditioned for Hellraiser 6 Despite Character Being Killed Off

Adam Scott Auditioned for Hellraiser 6 Despite Character Being Killed Off

Adam Scott revealed that he once tried to sneak his way back into the Hellraiser franchise, despite previously getting killed off. The Severance star made a recent appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers, where he shared that he auditioned for 2002’s Hellraiser: Hellseeker, even though his character Jacques — a servant who helps his aristocrat boss summon a demon — died in 1996’s Hellraiser: Bloodline. “My agent sends an audition for Hellraiser 6, and I’m like, ‘Wait a second… I was in Hellraiser 4,” he recalled. “But I need a job. So I’m like, ‘Screw it.’ And I go to the audition just thinking, ‘Maybe they won’t notice that I was in Hellraiser 4.’” Scott said he even tried to avoid making eye contact with one of the Bloodline producers, whom he recognized at his audition. “I remember being in the waiting room, kind of looking around and seeing a door ajar to someone’s office and seeing a producer from Hellraiser 4 in the office. And just like holding my papers up, just like, ‘OK, …

Full List of Honorees Big Screen Achievement Awards

James Cameron, one of the industry’s leading champions of the theatrical experience, leads CinemaCon’s roster of honorees for the Big Screen Achievement Awards. The ceremony — a starry gathering that closes the four day gathering of exhibition insiders presented by Cinema United — is set to take place inside the Dolby Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on April 16. It will see trophies going to James Cameron (Cinema United Spirit of the Industry), Queen Latifah (Cultural Impact in Film), LaKeith Stanfield (Star of the Year), Zoey Deutch (Vanguard Award) Adam Scott (Award of Excellence in Acting), Noah Centineo (Star of Tomorrow) and Catherine Lagaʻaia (Rising Star of 2026). Hosted by co-presenting sponsor Coca-Cola, the event will be hosted by Entertainment Tonight star Nischelle Turner, who replaces her ET colleague Kevin Frazier who has fronted it in years past. “Our industry is at its best when those in it come together to celebrate the power of seeing a movie on the big screen,” said Cinema United president and CEO Michael O’Leary. “This includes the …

Adam Scott, Danielle Deadwyler in Flat Thriller

Adam Scott, Danielle Deadwyler in Flat Thriller

If there is one thing Sean (Adam Scott) would like to make perfectly clear, it’s that he’s only ever had the best intentions. He’s no bigot. He doesn’t buy into far-right propaganda like his parents (Ron Perlman and Colleen Camp) do. And he’s been nothing but hospitable to his new Airbnb guests, Jahan (Nazanin Boniadi) and Amir (Theo Rossi). If it happens that he finds them suspicious, it’s certainly not because they’re Middle Eastern. It’s only because there’s just something off about them, somehow. As Sean eventually learns the hard way, though, good intentions can only ever count for so much. His movie, too, is proof of that. The premise of The Saviors, a genre-defying thriller written (with Travis Betz) and directed by Kevin Hamedani, is undeniably timely, exploring the way faulty assumptions about some unknown Other might have disastrous, even apocalyptic consequences. But an emphasis on broad ideas over nuanced detail yields a film that’s more interesting in theory than in practice. The Saviors The Bottom Line A worthwhile message, flatly conveyed. Venue: SXSW …

Adam Scott in So-So Irish Haunted Hotel Horror

Adam Scott in So-So Irish Haunted Hotel Horror

There may be no more fertile ground for screen horror than the enchanted woodlands of the Emerald Isle, which makes it disconcerting when Hokum — a title not entirely inaccurate — opens with a desert scene that’s like an outtake from Sirat. At least until Austin Amelio staggers into the shot in 16th-century conquistador armor, holding an ancient parchment with what appears to be a treasure map. That cumbersome framing device would be superfluous if not for some minor rewards at the end, marking the redemption of a troubled man and his hard-won self-forgiveness. But it’s also symptomatic of the frustrations of writer-director Damian McCarthy’s diffuse script, which piles on story points and portentous symbols but fails to elucidate the underlying mystery. It’s a non-negotiable rule for any horror hotelier who wants a decent Yelp rating — or should be — that you don’t put a vengeful ghost in your honeymoon suite if you’re not planning on adequately explaining who she is and how she got there. Otherwise, it’s just, well, hag hokum, with a …

Adam Scott in Netflix Animated Comedy

Adam Scott in Netflix Animated Comedy

Though it only began working for me as an overall series in its last couple of episodes, Netflix‘s new animated comedy Strip Law is, from its very first installment, an impressive pop culture-referencing machine pandering directly to the Xennial sensibility. I’m not completely sure that’s a compliment, but if you’re going to do something, you might as well commit fully. And Strip Law is absolutely committed to making sure that everybody watching it — or at least everybody with the patience to watch more than 15 or 20 minutes of the pilot, which otherwise isn’t especially funny — is provided with at least one reference they’re convinced nobody other than their five closest friends will understand. Once again, shared appreciation of obscurity is the great unifier. Strip Law The Bottom Line Fans of pop culture trivia won’t object to the lack of depth. Airdate: Friday, February 20 (Netflix)Vocal cast: Adam Scott, Janelle James, Stephen Root, Shannon Gisela, Keith DavidCreator: Cullen Crawford What else does the show offer? Inside jokes about Las Vegas! But not deep …
