Star Trek legend Nana Visitor has brought back her Deep Space Nine character Kira Nerys for a short but sweet new adventure. In Lost and Found, the latest animated short from Scopely, the team behind the game Star Trek Fleet Command, the crew of the Realta joins forces with Major Kira Nerys (who’s on board the USS Defiant). They’re tasked with investigating the disappearance of a Starfleet training vessel along the edge of Federation Space – but they discover the ship is far from empty, with Major Kira and co encountering an old enemy. Major Kira is forced to grapple with the loss of the crew of the Adelphi and report back to Captain Sisko before salvaging the remains of the ship. But she points out to the crew of the Realta: “I can’t shake the feeling that this is the beginning of something terrible” – leaving the short on a very settling note indeed. You’d be forgiven for skipping past Netflix’s gory, militaristic action thriller War Machine at this particular moment. There is, after all, an actual war raging on (is there ever a good time, one could argue?) but those behind the film would likely use its sci-fi bent as a differentiation defense. The war being raged here is not between the US and a foreign earthly entity but rather one from somewhere above, our umpteenth soldiers v aliens matchup. It’s a clear “if you like” column filler for fans of Predator, Edge of Tomorrow or, if they exist, Battle: Los Angeles, yet unlike the many films it’s clearly inspired by, the extraterrestrials here are designed to resemble machines that could have originated from another country rather than another planet, robotic whirring over tentacle slithering. It gives the film a slightly generic sheen, like a cheaper Transformers spin-off, but it’s also thankfully devoid of the dreaded Netflix murk, that flattening filter that reduces most colours to grey, the film an acquisition from Lionsgate. Artist Ako Castuera is best known for her work on the award-winning animated series “Adventure Time.” As a writer and storyboard artist, she helped intrepid heroes Jake the Dog and Finn the Human become iconic toon characters. Though she brought flying rainbow unicorns and a platoon of plotting penguins to life on screen, there’s more to Castuera’s resume than hyper-imaginative animation. Ako Castuera’s work is often called whimsical, but she feels as if the word doesn’t capture the depth of her artistic experience.
