The new rules for AI-assisted code in the Linux kernel: What every dev needs to know

ZDNET’s key takeaways Torvalds and the Linux maintainers are taking a pragmatic approach to using AI in the kernel.  AI or no AI, it’s people, not LLMs, who are responsible for Linux’s code.  If you try to mess around with Linux code using AI, bad things will happen. After months of heated debate, Linus Torvalds and the Linux kernel maintainers have officially codified the project’s first formal policy on AI-assisted code contributions. This new policy reflects Torvald’s pragmatic approach, balancing the embrace of modern AI development tools with the kernel’s rigorous quality standards. The new guidelines establish three core principles: AI agents cannot add Signed-off-by tags: Only humans can legally certify the Linux kernel’s Developer Certificate of Origin (DCO). This is the legal mechanism that ensures code licensing compliance. In other words, even if you turned in a patch that was written entirely by AI, you, and not the AI or its creator, are solely responsible for the contribution.  Mandatory Assisted-by attribution: …

Should AI-Assisted Shows Be Eligible for Emmys?

Should AI-Assisted Shows Be Eligible for Emmys?

During the recently concluded Oscars season, stars didn’t always want to speak about politics. But at awards show after awards show they were eager to share their thoughts on another hot topic: AI. Negative thoughts, mostly. As One Battle After Another actress Shayna McHale colorfully put it at the Writers Guild Awards, “Ladies, if you know a tech bro trying to replace writers with AI, just say, ‘this pussy don’t pop for you,’” invoking her character Junglepussy’s memorable line from the film. With Emmys season looming, the TV Academy wants to pave a smoother path. Hoping to clarify what will be in and out of bounds for this year’s nominees, the group in January added a statement to the rules for the upcoming season: The Academy, it said, reserves the “right to inquire about the use of AI in submissions.” But the organization undercut that vigilance with another line —  “The core of our recognition remains centered on human storytelling, regardless of the tools used to bring it to life.” And so, far from clearing up confusion, …

Two Philadelphia Men Admit To AI-Assisted .5M Housing Aid Scam In Minnesota

Two Philadelphia Men Admit To AI-Assisted $3.5M Housing Aid Scam In Minnesota

This will be the first of many AI scams of its kind, we predict… Two men from Pennsylvania admitted to repeatedly flying from Philadelphia to Minneapolis to exploit Minnesota’s Housing Stabilization Services (HSS) program, stealing about $3.5 million, according to prosecutors. Authorities say they used artificial intelligence to forge records and falsely bill for services, according to Fox News. Anthony Waddell Jefferson, 37, and Lester Brown, 53, registered businesses as HSS providers, claiming they offered housing support and transition services. In reality, officials say much of the work never happened. Launched in 2020, HSS helps people with disabilities, seniors, and those struggling with mental health or addiction secure housing. The Justice Department has noted the program had “low barriers to entry and minimal records requirements.” Attorney General Pam Bondi said, “Criminal fraud not only robs taxpayers — it shatters trust in our institutions… Our prosecutors will work tirelessly to unravel criminal fraud schemes.” Fox News writes that prosecutors allege the pair billed Medicaid for services supposedly provided to about 230 clients. Both men pleaded guilty …

Holywater Acquires AI-Assisted VFX Company Jeynix (Exclusive)

Holywater Acquires AI-Assisted VFX Company Jeynix (Exclusive)

Holywater, an AI-first vertical video company, has acquired visual effects company Jeynix, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively. And from here on out, Holywater will be known as Holywater Tech. Holywater is the tech company behind microdramas platform My Drama, books platform My Passion, and AI streaming platform My Muse. Holywater operates out of the Ukraine, where it was founded, but targets the U.S. vertical video market. Jeynix is described as a high-end AI-assisted production team specializing in hyper-realistic visual effects and performance preserving techniques for video. The addition of “Tech” in its rebrand is to “better reflect its technology-first identity, an emphasis the company has prioritized from the beginning,” THR is told. Jeynix is being brought in to “deliver cinematic-quality visuals at scale,” Holywater Tech says. It will keep the budgets low — a must in microdramas — and allow for “rapid localization across markets in a matter of days.” Holywater Tech has been making headlines in recent months. Last month, it announced a new financing round — its largest to-date — at $22 …

AI-assisted mammograms result in fewer aggressive and advanced breast cancers, study suggests | Science, Climate & Tech News

AI-assisted mammograms result in fewer aggressive and advanced breast cancers, study suggests | Science, Climate & Tech News

AI-supported mammography results in fewer aggressive and advanced breast cancers, according to a study. It detected more women with clinically relevant cancers and the authors say there’s a case for implementing it in screening programmes. The randomised control trial involved more than 100,000 Swedish women. Cancer diagnoses after AI-supported mammography were 12% lower, and the women were less likely to be diagnosed with more aggressive and advanced breast cancer in the years that followed. European guidelines recommend two radiologists read mammograms but some cancers still go undetected after screening. Estimates suggest 20-30% of breast cancers diagnosed after a negative screening and before the next scheduled one (interval cancers) could have been identified at the initial appointment. Previous studies and interim results of the Swedish trial found using AI increased detection compared with standard screening – but a key question has been if it translates into a reduction in interval cancers. More on Artificial Intelligence The women who took part in the trial were randomly assigned to either AI-assisted screening or standard double reading by radiologists. …

AI-assisted mammograms cut risk of developing aggressive breast cancer

Spotting cancer tumours in mammograms seems to be easier with AI AMELIE-BENOIST/BSIP/Universal Images Group via Getty People who are screened for breast cancer by AI-supported radiologists are less likely to develop aggressive cancers before their next screening round than those who are screened by radiologists alone, raising hopes that AI-assisted screening could save lives. “This is the first randomised controlled trial on the use of AI in mammography screening,” says Kristina Lång at Lund University in Sweden. The AI-supported approach involves using the software – which has been trained on more than 200,000 mammography scans from 10 countries – to rank the likelihood of cancer being present in mammograms on a scale of 1 to 10, based on visual patterns in the scans. The scans receiving a score of 1 to 9 are then assessed by one experienced radiologist, while scans receiving a score of 10 – indicating cancer is most likely to be present – are assessed by two experienced radiologists. An earlier study found that this approach could detect 29 per cent more cancers …
