The pet I’ll never forget: Harriet, the hedgehog in my airing cupboard | Pets

Harriet came into my life when I asked my vet if I could get a hedgehog to come and live in my garden and deal with the slugs. She found me Harriet in Tiggywinkles, a Buckinghamshire-based wildlife hospital. Harriet was rather shy. I brought her home in a cardboard box and put it on the ground, on its side. She poked her nose out and, as soon as she saw me, scuttled off to hide in a corner of the garden. Harriet settled in well and did her job efficiently, eating all the slugs. She slept in an old compost bag in the garden, to which I added some dried leaves to make a bed for her. One day, sitting on the sofa with my legs stretched out, I felt something touching my bare toes. It was Harriet, examining them. She had come in through the cat flap. She ran off when I moved, and I thought no more about it, until a few nights later, in the early hours, I heard an awful noise …

BBC Apologises for Airing BAFTA Racial Slur Made by Guest With Tourette’s

LONDON, Feb 23 (Reuters) – The BBC apologised on Monday for failing to edit out a racial slur from its broadcast of Britain’s top movie awards, after a guest with Tourette syndrome shouted out while two Black actors from the film “Sinners” were presenting an award. Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage at the BAFTAs when John Davidson shouted a racial slur. The BBC broadcast the show around two hours later and the offensive language remained in the programme, and on its ‌streaming platform until Monday morning.  Later, director Akinola Davies ‌Jr. said “Free Palestine” in an acceptance speech. The remark was edited out of the broadcast.   The racial slur by Davidson sparked anger from several Black actors and a production designer who said there should have been a more comprehensive apology at the time. Davidson attended the BAFTA awards in London on Sunday after his life inspired the film “I Swear”, which picked up several awards. Tourette syndrome is an involuntary condition that causes people to make sudden, repetitive sounds or …

Why Call the Midwife isn’t airing this weekend and when it’ll be back

Why Call the Midwife isn’t airing this weekend and when it’ll be back

Call the Midwife creator Heidi Thomas has written countless emotional storylines across the show’s 15 seasons, but the confirmation that Sister Monica Joan is nearing the end could well be the most devastating. It was confirmed in the most recent episode that she has chronic kidney disease, for which there is no cure. “Unless we can persuade her to accept what treatment there is, she’ll progress to end-stage renal failure fairly quickly,” warned Dr Turner (Stephen McGann), as a sombre Nurse Crane (Linda Bassett) vowed to “love her as we always have, but a bit more carefully”. Actor Judy Parfitt – who is now 90 herself – has been part of the beloved period drama from the very beginning, bringing a singular wit and gravitas to the role, and becoming a firm favourite among much of the viewership – all of which makes imagining the show without her a near-total impossibility. Thomas told Radio Times that while it was “hard” writing the season 15 finale, it was also “beautiful”. “Many of the things that I …

Industry season 4 release schedule | When is episode 2 airing in the UK and US?

Industry season 4 release schedule | When is episode 2 airing in the UK and US?

It’s time for those iconic synth tunes and bad decision-fuelled storylines as Industry returns for season 4. After the cliffhanger of season 3 and not quite knowing how things would pan out for Harper (Myha’la) and Yasmin (Marisa Abela) after the fall of Pierpoint, we’re right back in the centre of the drama as we jump forward in time. As well as being well and truly in the land of politics, new tech and supposedly newlywed bliss for Yasmin and Henry (Kit Harington), the premiere episode very much focuses on new enigmatic character, journalist Jim Dycker (Charlie Heaton) as he’s intent on cracking a major new story. While Harper certainly seems to be at the top of her A game, she becomes all too aware of the performative optics of heading up Otto Mostyn’s fund and wants out. There’s of course the introduction of Tender CFO Whitney Halberstram (Max Minghella), who has already made quite the impression on the series. So, it’s safe to say that we’re all eagerly awaiting the next episode. Unlike many …
