Anish Kapoor Calls for US Ban From Venice Biennale 2026

Artist Anish Kapoor called for the United States to be banned from the 2026 edition of the Venice Biennale while also applauding the jury’s recent decision to resign en masse. In an interview with the Guardian, Kapoor called the jury’s decision “courageous” and further criticized the US. “I would hope that [the jury] might have also excluded the United States for its abhorrent politics of hate and its incessant warmongering,” he said. While the jury did not explicitly say it had done so due to the inclusion of Israel and Russia in the exhibition, it had previously released a statement saying it would not consider for awards any national pavilions by countries who currently charged with crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court. Related Articles Controversy has swirled around the Venice Biennale in recent months, both for Israel and Russia’s returns to the event, as well as the pick of artist Alma Allen for the US Pavilion. Anish Kapoor Plans to Send Sculpture to Space

Anish Kapoor, a Turner Prize–winning artist who has never been afraid of controversy, has plotted his next project: sending a sculpture to space. What, exactly, the work might be remains a mystery, but he told the Times of London this week that it will ponder such questions as: “What is adequate? What can stand up against vast, eternal, cosmic space? It’s ambitious to put something in space which is visible from Earth.” According to Kapoor, the sculpture “might” involve mirrors. Related Articles It is ambitious, yes, but Kapoor is not the first to have attempted such a feat (or stunt, depending on how you look at it). As my colleague Emily Watlington highlighted in Art in America in 2023, artists ranging from Jeff Koons to Tavares Strachan have performed similar acts. She wrote that sending art to space “underscores the idea of the private space sector as a plaything for the ultra-rich.” Who is funding Kapoor’s latest project? He would not tell the Times of London, saying only that the work would cost nine figures …

Anish Kapoor Will Show Architectural Models at Venetian Palazzo

The 16th-century Palazzo Manfrin in Venice, which was purchased by the British-Indian artist Anish Kapoor in 2018 to house his foundation, will open to the public for only the second time this spring. (The first was in 2022, when the palazzo co-hosted, with the Gallerie dell’Accademia, a show of new works Kapoor made using nanotechnology.) The upcoming exhibition, according to The Art Newspaper, will open on May 5, a few days before the 61st Venice Biennale. The show will feature some 100 architectural models, sculptures, and installations—most of which are related to unrealized large-scale projects—from the past 50 years. Related Articles Kapoor told TAN that the focus on less saleable work is intentional. “It’s important that [the show] isn’t restricted to what the market can consume. Yes, there’s a side of my practice that is for sale. But throughout my career I’ve always had all kinds of works—things made out of wax and all sorts of things—I’ve hardly ever sold a single one of those, and in a way that’s what keeps my practice alive.” …
