The Most Anticipated Horror Books Coming Out this Fall

2026 has been a great year for horror so far, but this fall is going to be unmatched. Why? We’re getting new books from three authors who have written some of our favorite horror novels of the past few years. Before their new books come out this fall, make sure you read these authors’ highly rated recent horror releases. Then you’ll be just as excited about these books as we are! Here’s what you’ll want on your TBR right now. Mazywood by Tananarive Due (S&S/Saga Press, September 22) Tananarive Due’s 2023 horror novel The Reformatory has an average rating of 4.43 on Goodreads and is one of the best-written horror novels of the past several years. Due’s latest horror novel follows three generations. Filmmaker Johnny Washington inherits Mazywood, a remote mountain retreat, from his grandmother Mazelle, who was a famous actress in the 1940s and 50s. Now, 50 years after Mazelle’s death, Johnny takes a trip to her cabin only to encounter an evil creature in the woods. Newbourne Park by Jennifer Thorne (G.P. Putnam’s …

Adventurers and admirers gather around: there are some excellent romantasies to look out for in 2026. Romantasy, combining the fantasy and romance genres, continues to be a big hit on the shelves. Featuring a central love story with a Happily Ever After/Happily For Now ending in a fantasy world setting, the subgenre gives readers a chance to experience fantastical worlds and love simultaneously. Romantasy has a foothold in the zeitgeist, speaking to our collective longing for magic, myth, legend, and romance made manifest in novels where, although impossible odds may impede you, you will always have someone by your side, rooting for your success. Romantasy is a hope-forward subgenre that I find absolutely enchanting. One thing is for sure: in 2026, publishers are not leaving anything on the table. Now that the subgenre is more established, authors have a chance to play within the space and take chances with new ideas, from funny cozy concepts to darker plots. …

I’ve been a scaredy cat my whole life, with horror movies giving me nightmares for weeks. And yet, some of my favourite people love horror. So, I keep dipping my toe in the genre, despite the risks. I started by incorporating some queer horror reads around Halloween, and I was surprised to find a few I loved. Over the years, that has turned into a month-long horror reading marathon in October. Now, it’s spilling into the rest of the year, too. What can I say?: there’s nothing like a sapphic gothic novel. At this point, I’m forced to admit that horror is one of my top genres—in fact, the majority of my most anticipated releases are horror or horror-adjacent. Here are three sapphic horror novels out in 2026 on my TBR, from a dark necromantic fantasy to a historical boarding school gothic to a YA Faustian bargain. All Access members, read on …

The Intrigue by Silvia Moreno-Garcia Release date: Jul 14, 2026 Silvia Moreno-Garcia could write a guide on knitting sweaters for earthworms, and I’d be out here cheering, “Yesss, clothe the tiny invertebrates!” She has, of course, crafted an irresistible plot in a noir tale of desire, greed, and seduction. In 1940s Mexico, a handsome grifter charms women into giving him their money through letters. Intent on securing a bigger, more reliable bag when the letter scheme runs its course, he sets his sights on the owner of a boardinghouse in a small town in Veracruz. There are two holes in this plan: his intended victim’s niece clocks him right away and wants in on the scheme as a means to escape this small town, and his victim is not the gullible mark he thinks she is… —Vanessa Diaz Source link
