Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin said Monday that an explosion near a synagogue in the eastern city of Liege overnight was “a despicable antisemitic act” and that federal prosecutors were investigating, as several countries in Europe tighten security due to the U.S.-Israel war on Iran. Liege police said that the blast outside the synagogue happened in the early hours of Monday morning. No one was injured but the windows of a building in front of the synagogue were blown out. The street remained blocked off while investigators combed the area, a statement said. “The explosion in front of the Liege synagogue was a despicable antisemitic act that directly targeted the Jewish community of Belgium,” Quintin said in a post on X. “Security around similar sites will continue to be strengthened.” He made no link between the blast and the Iran war. Belgium’s federal judicial police anti-terrorism unit and the federal prosecutor’s office are investigating the incident. A spokesperson for the Liège mayor’s office told POLITICO: “The mayor and the municipal executive express their strongest condemnation of this extremely violent act of antisemitism, which runs counter to Liège’s tradition of respect for others. There can be no question of importing external conflicts into our city.” According to the mayor’s office, the blast caused damage to the building. Local media reported that windows on the building’s front façade were blown out. The mayor’s office said a press briefing would be held later in the day. Israel’s Ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg Idit Rosenzweig-Abu also condemned the attack. “I was shocked by the news of the attack in Liége. I am in touch with the community that is understandingly shaken and terrified. Dozens of antisemitic incidents were recorded following the deadly Manchester synagogue attack, according to a new report. The Community Security Trust (CST), which monitors antisemitism in the UK, said 40 were recorded on 2 October last year – the day of the attack – and a further 40 the day after, more than half of which involved direct reactions to the deadly attack. These were the highest daily totals in 2025. Melvin Cravitz, 66, and Adrian Daulby, 53, were killed in the attack at Heaton Park Hebrew Synagogue in Crumpsall. Vanguard Britannica, which was founded as a small group in 2022 in Leicestershire and has since expanded by allying with white supremacist groups in Britain and the United States, has also carried out combat training to prepare its members to take part in political violence. Propaganda films feature masked men fighting in fields, kickboxing and taking part in fitness drills. Training programmes have taken place in London, the Midlands, East Anglia and Scotland. After being established, members targeted areas with Jewish and ethnic minority populations with racist stickers and vandalism.
