The ‘Lonely Runner’ Problem Only Appears Simple

The ‘Lonely Runner’ Problem Only Appears Simple

The original version of this story appeared in Quanta Magazine. Picture a bizarre training exercise: A group of runners starts jogging around a circular track, with each runner maintaining a unique, constant pace. Will every runner end up “lonely,” or relatively far from everyone else, at least once, no matter their speeds? Mathematicians conjecture that the answer is yes. The “lonely runner” problem might seem simple and inconsequential, but it crops up in many guises throughout math. It’s equivalent to questions in number theory, geometry, graph theory, and more—about when it’s possible to get a clear line of sight in a field of obstacles, or where billiard balls might move on a table, or how to organize a network. “It has so many facets. It touches so many different mathematical fields,” said Matthias Beck of San Francisco State University. For just two or three runners, the conjecture’s proof is elementary. Mathematicians proved it for four runners in the 1970s, and by 2007, they’d gotten as far as seven. But for the past two decades, no …

British man accused of leading al Shabaab terrorist fighters in Somalia appears in court | UK News

A Briton has appeared in court accused of leading a group of fighters from the al Shabaab terrorist group in Somalia. Prosecutors allege Jermaine Grant, who was born in London, joined al Shabaab commando training camps, becoming a platoon leader and taking part in battles in Somalia. The 43-year-old is charged with directing the activities of al Shabaab between December 2007 and January 2010. He is also accused of two counts of possessing an AK-47 assault rifle for terrorist purposes and three counts of attending one of the group’s training camps within a similar timeframe. He attended Westminster Magistrates’ Court via videolink from HMP Frankland on Thursday, but did not enter pleas. District judge Hina Rai said Grant’s case was “too serious” to be dealt with by a magistrates’ court, and remanded him into custody to appear at the Old Bailey on 1 May. Al Shabaab, which has been linked to al Qaeda, was proscribed as a terrorist organisation by the UK in March 2010 over its violent campaign “employing a range of terrorist tactics …

Kilmer was cast to play Catholic priest and Native American spiritualist Father Fintan in 2020, but he was unable to shoot due to health issues from throat cancer, which he had been diagnosed with in 2014. He had a tracheotomy, which resulted in the loss of his voice. AI was previously used to recreate Kilmer’s voice for his appearance in Top Gun: Maverick. Kilmer died in April 2025 at the age of 65 from pneumonia. As Deep as the Grave, which was previously titled Canyon del Muerto, tells the real-life story of early archaeologists Ann and Earl Morris, played by Abigail Lawrie and Tom Felton, as they work in Canyon de Chelly, Arizona, …

U.S. Blockade in Strait of Hormuz Appears to Hold

new video loaded: U.S. Blockade in Strait of Hormuz Appears to Hold transcript Back transcript U.S. Blockade in Strait of Hormuz Appears to Hold The U.S. blockade of the Strait of Hormuz appeared to be working on Wednesday, as marine trackers reported no Iran-linked ships entering or exiting the strait since the blockade began on Monday. “I had to divert because if I didn’t do that, right now you would have Iran with a nuclear weapon. And if they had a nuclear weapon, you would be calling everybody over there ‘sir.’ And you don’t want to do that.” “Well, you keep saying ‘was’ — is this war over?” “I think it’s close to over, yeah, I mean, I view it as very close to over. You know what? If I pulled up stakes right now, it would take them 20 years to rebuild that country. And we’re not finished. We’ll see what happens. I think they want to make a deal very badly.” The U.S. blockade of the Strait of Hormuz appeared to be working …

AI Use Appears to Have a “Boiling Frog” Effect on Human Cognition, New Study Warns

AI Use Appears to Have a “Boiling Frog” Effect on Human Cognition, New Study Warns

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech In a new study, researchers claim to provide the first causal evidence that leaning on AI to assist with “reasoning-intensive” cognitive labor — mental tasks ranging from writing to studying to coding to simply brainstorming new ideas — can rapidly impair users’ intellectual ability and willingness to persist despite difficulty. “We find that AI assistance improves immediate performance, but it comes at a heavy cognitive cost,” the study declares of its findings. “After just [about] 10 minutes of AI-assisted problem-solving, people who lost access to the AI performed worse and gave up more frequently than those who never used it.” The study, which was conducted by a multidisciplinary cohort of scientists from across the United States and United Kingdom, has yet to be peer-reviewed. But it builds on a growing body of research suggesting that extensive AI use can distort and dampen users’ thinking and independence, and as experts work to understand the impacts of widely-used chatbots on people as …

Bladder toxicity risk appears low for psychiatric ketamine patients, though data is limited

Bladder toxicity risk appears low for psychiatric ketamine patients, though data is limited

A new review of clinical studies suggests that people receiving ketamine for mental health conditions do not face an elevated risk of severe bladder and urinary tract issues, at least in the short term. Researchers noted that while these symptoms are common among recreational users, medically supervised doses appear much safer. The findings were published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology. Ketamine was synthesized in the early 1960s as a safer alternative to older anesthetics. It offered a shorter duration of effects and a lower risk of delirium. For over fifty years, it has been a staple in operating rooms across the globe. Today, it remains heavily used by surgeons and trauma professionals to induce a loss of consciousness and relieve severe pain. In recent years, the medical community began exploring the drug for an entirely different purpose. Researchers discovered that providing patients with smaller, subanesthetic doses could rapidly alleviate severe psychiatric distress. It became a popular option for people with treatment-resistant depression, which is a diagnosis given when standard oral antidepressants fail to improve a …

Michael Pollan on consciousness, psychedelics, and his new book A World Appears

Michael Pollan on consciousness, psychedelics, and his new book A World Appears

Why does this matter to Pollan so much? After all, if you ask the average Joe, Pollan is the American author, television presenter, film-maker and food activist who coined the time-old adage “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants”, and whose favourite thing to do is magic mushrooms. His fans include Jay Shetty, Tim Ferriss and Jamie Oliver. Odd, then, to hear him speak so passionately about an issue that seemingly has nothing to do with diet or psychedelics. Yet the link between the three topics is more obvious than first meets the eye. Any conversation on AI, culinary choices or psychoactive substances is, ultimately, a conversation about consciousness. Speaking on Brave New World, the Standard’s podcast about science and the future of humanity, this is what Pollan wants to talk about with me today. Source link

Downed U.S. Drone Appears On TikTok Live As Iraqi Children Try To Sell It

As the U.S.-Iran conflict enters its second month, America’s Low-Cost Unmanned Combat Attack System, or LUCAS, is becoming increasingly visible across the Middle East theater, a sign that the Department of War has learned one critical lesson from both the Iranian drone playbook and the Ukraine-Russia war: cheap drones are the future of warfare. The latest news on LUCAS comes from an unverifiable TikTok video, amplified on X, which appears to show a downed drone seized by Iraqi children who are reportedly trying to sell it. If authentic, the footage is another reminder that low-cost drones are proliferating so widely across the region that they will likely spread to other parts of the world.
