The first Sunday of October means one thing in the racing calendar: a visit to ParisLongchamp Racecourse for the Prix De L’Arc De Triomphe. The €5 million prize fund makes it Europe’s richest flat race and a field of the finest middle-distance runners will tear around the 1 mile, 4-furlong course in pursuit of the largest share. The 105th edition will be particularly special as it is the last year before the restriction to omit geldings (a male horse that has been castrated and is seen as easier to train) is lifted. As a result, the horse and rider that cross the finish line this year will earn their place in the history books. When people think of evolutionary psychology, they often think about such findings as: A high proportion of homicides result from male reactions to sexual infidelity (Daly & Wilson, 1988). People evolved to be fiercely tribal, showing strong biases to benefit members of their own group at a cost to others (Billig & Tajfel, 1973). Humans nearly stand alone within the animal kingdom when it comes to engaging in warfare (Smith, 2008). Indeed, a basic course that includes learning about natural selection leads immediately to an understanding of adaptations as serving individuals within a species, often at a cost to conspecifics (other members of the same species; c.f., Dawkins, 1976). In a sense, these ideas that serve as a foundation for the field of evolutionary psychology have a strong focus on anti-social behaviors—behaviors that hurt others to one’s own evolutionary benefit. If we stop there in our learning about how evolution has shaped human behavior, it stands to reason that this perspective would become known for painting a deeply disturbing portrait of who we are. It might be a bit too convenient, at this moment in history, to observe that failing tyrants, as they feel their power slipping away, start building grandiose monuments to themselves. But at least in the modern context, it’s not wrong. Let’s put it this way: Any leader of the last century or so who wants to celebrate his glorious reign with, just for example, a grand triumphal arch and a plan to destroy and rebuild important landmarks of his capital city is only imitating the past, while ignoring its most obvious lessons. He’s likely to end up celebrating only his own decadence, poverty of spirit and enormous hubris. As British journalist Jonn Elledge observed recently, if Donald Trump ever encountered Percy Shelley’s sonnet “Ozymandias” during his mediocre education, he clearly didn’t get the point. From Egypt, I followed the Nile all the way to its source in East Africa before making my way down to South Africa, which was still under apartheid at the time. I was no newbie to hitchhiking.
