The arc of human history is toward cooperation, not division

Sign up for The Great Progression: 2025-2050 on Substack. In the early 1980s, I hitchhiked from London to Cape Town at the tip of South Africa. The overland trip took more than six months, and I traveled about 11,000 miles — almost half the circumference of the Earth. I dropped down through Europe, crossed into Morocco via the Strait of Gibraltar, and then traveled across North Africa. From Egypt, I followed the Nile all the way to its source in East Africa before making my way down to South Africa, which was still under apartheid at the time. I was no newbie to hitchhiking. Since high school, I had hitched rides across the United States numerous times, traveling from coast to coast on many of the nation’s major interstate freeways. Hitching was also the main way I moved between my home in the Midwest and my university on the East Coast. I loved hitchhiking because it offered a fantastic way to get to know an amazing cross section of people from many different classes and races and …

Arc Boats’ new ‘high-octane package’ makes your boat worse for April Fools

Arc Boats’ new ‘high-octane package’ makes your boat worse for April Fools

It’s April Fools’ Day, also known as the worst day on the internet, where everyone thinks they’re clever with their fake announcements. But Arc Boats has a pretty clever one today, which makes a real point about the benefits of electric propulsion. Arc is an electric boat company, which started out making high-performance sport boats and is now working to hybridize other parts of the marine industry. As such, it likes to tout the superiority of electric propulsion, and to point out the annoyances that boat owners have always had to go through in order to keep their fossil-powered boats running. Advertisement – scroll for more content Electric propulsion is cleaner, more reliable, quieter, cheaper to fuel, easier to maintain, and if you’ve got a dock then you don’t even need to go anywhere to fill up. So, how better to make all those points than to offer an optional package to make your boat worse, just to remind you of the bad old days of having to burn millions-year-old dino juice to get around. …

The Merrell Speed Arc has the support I need to walk 8,000 steps a day—get them now for up to 50% off

It’s rare to find a shoe that is comfortable enough for walking and spending a lot of time on your feet that actually looks good. But Merrell Speed Arc Matis is that shoe. It’s an urban walking shoe with support and comfort for everyday wear. And the men’s is currently up to 50% off on Amazon, with 45% off the women’s. I’ve been wearing these shoes non-stop for the past year and they’re still in great condition. They’re my favourite pair to throw on for running errands or heading out for a walk around my local park. I’ve also taken them on a couple of city breaks, and they’re great for long days on your feet. With so many colorways available, I’m considering investing in a new pair to add to my collection. Merrell is known for making hiking and outdoor shoes, but the Speed Arc was designed as a more lightweight, everyday shoe, helping to make your daily steps more comfortable. I’ve also worn them on longer walks and found them to provide a …

Arc expands into electric commercial and defense boats with M raise

Arc expands into electric commercial and defense boats with $50M raise

Los Angeles startup Arc Boat Company wants to expand its nascent commercial business and even sell electric propulsion systems to defense contractors, in an attempt to fulfill founder Mitch Lee’s desire to “electrify everything on the water.” To do that, Arc has raised $50 million in a Series C funding round from Eclipse, a16z, Menlo Ventures, Lowercarbon Capital, Necessary Ventures, and Offline Ventures. The expansion into these newer markets won’t come at the expense of Arc’s consumer boat business, Lee told TechCrunch in an interview. He said sport boats are a category that generates “meaningful revenue” for Arc, and helps prove to commercial customers that the company’s technology is both capable and durable. It’s a plan that roughly approximates how Tesla got started, and one that Greg Reichow — a former VP at Tesla and a general partner at Eclipse — said can work for Arc. “The right strategy was go develop the technology, get it to work on the high end of consumer boats, then take that technology as you get some experience with …

Gemma Collins teases “redemption” arc as she returns to the I’m a Celebrity jungle

Gemma Collins is returning to the I’m a Celebrity jungle and this time, she’s on a mission of redemption. The TOWIE legend first appeared on the ITV programme in 2014 and was arguably the most entertaining person to watch, but she quickly threw the towel in and became the first contestant to leave her season. Collins had been vocal about her discomfort at jungle life, saying at the time: “I’ve got to go. Three days. I’ve just got to get out of here. You have to get me out of here. It’s making me feel panicked and stressed. It’s not normal.” She then continued: “I’ve got to get out of here. I cannot go another f***ing day in here. It’s not on. It’s absolutely ridiculous. I will never ever do a show like this ever. It’s put me off TV for life. “I’m telling you now. It’s winding me up now. This is bull***t, man. I can’t handle it. Just get me out of here. I certainly won’t be coming back for more. That’s for …

The Downward Arc of Donald Trump, With Ruth Ben-Ghiat

The Downward Arc of Donald Trump, With Ruth Ben-Ghiat

Virility and victimhood – how do these seemingly opposite characteristics prop up strongman leaders throughout recent history? Expert and best-selling author Dr. Ruth Ben-Ghiat connects the dots in a conversation full of wisdom and, ultimately, hope that the current attempt at authoritarian rule in the United States is on the decline. The author of Strongmen: From Mussolini to Today, Ruth makes clear that war is often a cold-blooded tool of authoritarians – particularly if they see other means of consolidating power no longer work. Religious and spiritual language is also a near-universal tool in the strongman’s arsenal, making American Christian Nationalism just more of the same for anyone looking closely at the history of authoritarianism in the past century or so. Inevitability is a cornerstone of the image projected by strongman propaganda. As Ruth points out in her book, The authoritarian playbook has no chapter on failure. And so self-delusion is an important part of keeping an authoritarian takeover in motion: nobody can stop this. In fact, most people are enthusiastically supportive of anything …

Mélenchon’s attempt to embody an ‘antifascist arc’ backs the rest of the left into a corner

Mélenchon’s attempt to embody an ‘antifascist arc’ backs the rest of the left into a corner

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, at a rally in Lyon, on February 26, 2026. BRUNO AMSELLEM/DIVERGENCE FOR LE MONDE Did the second round of the 2027 presidential election begin on February 14, 2026, after far-right activist Quentin Deranque died in the city of Lyon? It seems that a face-off between the far-right Rassemblement National (RN) and radical left La France Insoumise (LFI) parties is taking shape, one that the far right has dreamed of and Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s LFI has theorized about for several years, under the slogan of “them against us.” Since the tragic incident occurred in Lyon, the far right, the right and part of President Emmanuel Macron’s party have seized on it as an opportunity to cast Mélenchon as the republic’s new political pariah, calling for forming a “united front” against him. This anti-LFI front, a complete reversal of the traditional republican front against the far right, is not, however, something Mélenchon seems bothered by. Arc de Triomphe knife attack highlights difficulty in monitoring radicalized former prisoners

Soldiers and police officers near the Arc de Triomphe after the stabbing attack on a police officer in Paris, February 13, 2026. BENOIT TESSIER / REUTERS Only two months after being released early from prison, where he had been serving a 17-year sentence for stabbing two Belgian police officers in 2012 – one of whom, a woman, was seriously injured at the time – a radical Islamist attempted to knife gendarmes preparing to take part in a ceremony to rekindle the flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier under the Arc de Triomphe, in Paris’s 8th arrondissement. On Friday, February 13, shortly after 6 pm, according to a statement from France’s national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office (PNAT): “A man attacked a member of the Gendarmerie nationale with a knife and a pair of scissors. Another gendarme responded by using his service weapon to neutralize the assailant. The attacked gendarme was not physically injured, as the knife struck the collar of his coat.” The gendarmerie specified that the individual had targeted “musicians of the mobile gendarmerie.” …
