Google Warns That Quantum Armageddon Is Drawing Closer

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech On Wednesday, Google said it was moving up the date it needs to prepare for when quantum computers will be able to break current encryption algorithms to 2029, catching experts off-guard.  This hypothetical turning point, called Q Day, is an ominous reminder that advances in the world of quantum computing could have seismic implications in our information age that we need to prepare for, and not all of them good. “Quantum computers will pose a significant threat to current cryptographic standards, and specifically to encryption and digital signatures,” Google said in its Wednesday announcement, penned by Heather Adkins, Google’s VP of security engineering, and Sophie Schmieg, a senior cryptography engineer at the company. Classical computers use bits to store information in a binary state, either as a one or a zero. Quantum computers, on the other hand, use quantum particles called qubits that, due to a spooky quantum property called superposition, can be in two states at once. …

Armageddon is not a strategy for peace in Iran

Armageddon is not a strategy for peace in Iran

(RNS) —  The Military Religious Freedom Foundation said in recent days that soldiers have been reporting that the Book of Revelation — the New Testament’s apocalyptic last book foretelling the Second Coming of Christ — had been making odd appearances at some combat briefings for attacks on Iran. More than 200 service members, the group claimed, complained the bombing campaign was being connected to the biblical battle of Armageddon or the unfolding of the “End Times.” MRFF’s reports have not been corroborated, and even if 100 troops have heard this kind of talk, it doesn’t mean the American military as a whole views the conflict as a holy war. Nor should isolated reports be mistaken for official policy or mainstream thinking within the armed forces. But it would not be the only reminder that when war breaks out in the Middle East, the apocalypse rears its head. Earlier this month, Pastor John Hagee rolled out a sermon in which he said, “Prophetically, we’re right on cue,” citing the Bible to compare current events to the …

Pete Hegseth’s Holy War at the Pentagon

When the podium becomes a pulpit. At a Pentagon press briefing this week, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth closed his remarks with a reading from the Book of Psalms and ended with “Amen.” Press briefings don’t usually end that way. It’s the latest moment in a pattern that RNS national reporter Jack Jenkins began tracing last fall — and the pattern has only sharpened since. What started as prominent Christian declarations in Hegseth’s public rhetoric has escalated. Some members of Congress are now calling for a Department of Defense investigation over claims related to military officers allegedly invoking the Bible in pursuit of the Iran war. When Complexified first aired this conversation with Jack Jenkins back in October, Hegseth had already spent nine months reshaping the Pentagon — hosting monthly worship services in the auditorium, overlaying Scripture on images of fighter jets and missile systems, and telling assembled troops the country needed to be “on bended knee, recognizing the providence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” The question at the center of this conversation has …

Troops Being Told To Prepare for ‘Armageddon’ In Iran

For some US military commanders, the emerging war in Iran is part of a biblical plan to bring about the end of the world as we know it, according to complaints filed by over 100 service members. The Military Religious Freedom Foundation has received a litany of complaints about religious ideology seeping into military orders since the US and Israel began bombing Iran, independent journalist Jon Larsen first reported. Mikey Weinstein, founder and president of MRFF, a nonprofit group established 21 years ago that focuses on ensuring constitutional protections for service members, spoke with HuffPost by phone and illuminated some details of the complaints, which have come from more than three dozen military units situated in at least 30 different military installations. “We started getting calls in the wee hours of Saturday morning from people saying their commanders were just jubilant about this and trying to tell people, ‘Don’t worry, it’s all part of God’s plan,’” Weinstein said. Weinstein said the “metric promised” in the Bible’s Book of Revelation is horrifying and should worry everyone. …
