Netflix expands revamped mobile app across Asia and doubles down on kids’ gaming

Netflix is stepping up its game in mobile and gaming, as revealed during the company’s recent APAC Product Innovation Showcase.  During the event, Netflix outlined plans to expand its refreshed mobile experience to additional markets across Asia-Pacific, while also growing its gaming ambitions through the continued rollout of Netflix Playground, a dedicated space for children’s games. Netflix also continues to broaden the reach of its redesigned mobile app. After rolling out the updated experience in Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, India, and Malaysia earlier this year, Netflix plans to launch it in South Korea and Japan in July, with additional Asia-Pacific markets to follow. A key part of the redesign is “Clips,” Netflix’s answer to the growing popularity of short-form video. The vertical video feed allows users to browse bite-sized content from across Netflix’s library, offering quick entertainment during moments when viewers may not have time to commit to a full episode or movie. Lee Chang-dong Set for Malaysian Film Fest Lifetime Achievement Honor

South Korean auteur Lee Chang-dong will receive the lifetime achievement award at this year’s Malaysia International Film Festival, the Kuala Lumpur event announced this week as it unveiled the program for its ninth edition, running July 18-25. Announcing the honor, MIFFest president Joanne Goh called Lee “a filmmaker whose work continues to resonate across cultures and generations through its honesty, compassion, and profound understanding of humanity,” adding that his films “remind us of cinema’s unique ability to inspire empathy, provoke reflection, and connect us through shared human experiences.” The Malaysian festival will feature a special tribute to Lee, including screenings of two of his early landmarks, Peppermint Candy (1998) and Oasis (2002). A revered figure across Asian cinema and a fixture of the major European festivals, Lee has built a reputation — across just six features over three decades — as something of an auteur’s auteur, more treasured by critics and cinephiles than at the box office. His films probe grief, social alienation and moral ambiguity with a spare, literary intensity that reflects his early …

Iran conflict: Why has oil stayed near $100 a barrel? | US-Israel war on Iran

The worst-case oil scenario has been avoided, but inflation and slower growth continue to weigh on the global economy. More than 100 days into the Iran conflict, 20 percent of the world’s energy flows remain disrupted, with the scenario described as the biggest supply shock in history. For now, the nightmare scenario has been avoided. Oil prices are still at approximately $100 a barrel. Many analysts have warned that a prolonged disruption to the Strait of Hormuz could send oil above $200 a barrel, triggering a global economic crisis. Various countries have released their strategic reserves, exporters have found alternative routes and weaker demand has helped contain prices. But the buffers are thinning. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) warns the economic impact could linger well into 2027, even if the conflict ends tomorrow. The change has been eagerly anticipated for years: Bemotrizinol has long been popular in Europe, Australia and some Asian countries. It also marks the first time in more than 20 years the FDA has permitted a new compound onto its sunscreen ingredient list. Why the excitement? Bemotrizinol is a UV light filter, meaning it blocks out harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun. To be most effective, these filters need to be broad-spectrum, meaning they block UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays cause aging and wrinkles, while UVB rays cause sunburn, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Both contribute to skin cancer, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. UV filters come in two formats: mineral or chemical. The mineral sunscreens — which contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide — block both UVA and UVB rays but often leave a white …

The show is pitched as a crime thriller laced with drama and humor, exploring “the value of money, human desire and the thin line between what is considered ‘real’ and ‘fake’ in society.” The project reunites Lee with Park, who starred in the director’s recent Netflix series Karma.
