Reality TV Is Straining Under the Weight of Scandal. Can It Go On Like This?

In 2023, Anna Peele wrote about the reckoning facing reality TV—more specifically, the Bravo-verse—in her explosive Vanity Fair exposé. She revealed the disturbing allegations of alcohol abuse and racism that allegedly pervaded the Real Housewives franchise. At the time, former Real Housewives of New York City cast member Bethenny Frankel was calling for reality TV personalities to unionize in hopes of more protections for the stars of these popular shows. Reality TV has always been about drama, but some of the latest scandals have sent shows and their fans into an existential crisis. Most recently, ABC made the unprecedented move of canceling a fully shot season of The Bachelorette after the emergence of a disturbing video showing the season’s star, Taylor Frankie Paul, in a domestic dispute. This season was expected to usher in a new era for the long-standing dating show, by bringing on a star of a different series (the very popular Secret Lives of Mormon Wives) with the aim of pulling in new viewers. “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives is supposed …

Dakota Mortensen, who has temporary custody of his and Paul’s 2-year-old son, is asking the court to turn a short-term protective order against her into a long-term one as authorities investigate domestic violence reports from earlier this year. Paul and Mortensen are expected to participate in the hearing remotely while their lawyers appear in person at the Salt Lake City courthouse. Details of the temporary protective order have been kept sealed. Attorneys are expected to address reports under investigation from February, not a 2023 fight that led to Paul’s arrest and resurfaced just …

Before the Summer House Scandal Took Over Your Feed, Lindsay Hubbard Was Spotted Getting “Activated” Downtown

It was just another day of lunch service at the Odeon, the Tribeca restaurant recently depicted on FX’s Love Story, when word of a reality TV scandal began to spread. In the bustling dining room, Lindsay Hubbard, a former publicist and original cast member on Bravo’s Summer House, was sipping wine with a couple of other women, getting up from their table to take a few frantic phone calls. In recent weeks, whispers that two of her costars were secretly dating had been floating throughout New York City and when she rejoined her table, Hubbard appeared to have received some form of confirmation. “Ciara just said…” she urgently told her tablemates, dissolving into a hushed, but excited tone, according to a fellow diner and source close to Vanity Fair. (Hubbard’s reps declined to comment to VF.) Just 24 hours later, the rest of the world learned what Ciara Miller may have told her “activated” costar over day drinks: Miller’s ex-boyfriend West Wilson had been covertly dating her best friend Amanda Batula, all of whom share …

Rachel Lindsay Says Bachelor Franchise Over Amid Taylor Bachelorette Scandal

Former Bachelorette Rachel Lindsay doesn’t think the Bachelor franchise can survive Taylor Frankie Paul’s domestic violence controversy.  During a Thursday taping of the Bachelor Party podcast, the former franchise lead learned of ABC’s decision to pull The Bachelorette season 22 after a video leaked of Paul, depicting the events that led to her 2023 arrest.  Lindsay cut her two co-hosts off to share the news, admitting she had “chills.” She also explained that she thought the season was “over” after the video was released.  “I think it’s over. I was trying to think of a scenario where it could be different. Because this isn’t just, ‘Oh, we put it all on a person. You can’t.” ABC yanked Paul’s Bachelorette season on Thursday after a 2023 video of Paul engaging in a domestic dispute with her on-again, off-again boyfriend Dakota Mortensen was posted by TMZ. …
