Bryce Harper Leads Phillies Past Braves 8-5 in 10 Innings to Stop 10-Game Losing Streak

ATLANTA (AP) — Bryce Harper had four RBIs, including a tiebreaking single in the 10th inning, and the Philadelphia Phillies snapped their 10-game losing streak with an 8-5 win over the Atlanta Braves on Saturday night. Phillies ace Zack Wheeler made his 2026 debut and looked strong, giving up two runs and three hits over five innings. The right-hander returned from thoracic outlet decompression surgery after a blood clot was discovered in his pitching shoulder last season. After the start was delayed 56 minutes because of rain, Wheeler struck out six, walked three and left with a 3-2 lead. Harper had two hits and scored twice for the Phillies, who hadn’t won since April 13. Brad Keller (1-0) tossed 1 1/3 hitless innings for the win. Kyle Backhus got Michael Harris II to ground out with two runners aboard to end it. Ozzie Albies was 3 for 5 with an RBI and Harris went 2 for 4 with two RBIs for the Braves, who had won nine of 10. Tyler Kinley (3-1) walked Trea Turner …

Dodgers Honor Rick Monday’s Dramatic 1976 Flag Rescue on Its 50th Anniversary

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers marked the 50th anniversary of Rick Monday rescuing the American flag from being burned in a 1976 game against the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. Monday and his wife, Barbaralee, held up the preserved flag on the field to a standing ovation. Monday was playing center field for the Cubs on April 25, 1976, against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. In the fourth inning, two men came on the field, spread the flag on the left-center field grass and doused it with lighter fluid. Monday ran over and snatched the flag with his right hand and sprinted away before giving it to Dodgers pitcher Doug Rau. The crowd responded with a standing ovation. When Monday came to bat an inning later, the stadium message board read: “Rick Monday…You made a great play.” A six-year veteran of the Marine Corps reserves, Monday received a bronze sculpture of him running with the flag from Marine Corps members Saturday. “I had no idea they were going to be here or present …

Swanson’s 2-Run 9th-Inning Blast Fuels Cubs’ Comeback Win, 10th in a Row

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dansby Swanson hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the ninth inning to cap a four-RBI performance from the No. 9 spot, rallying the Chicago Cubs past the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4 on Friday night for their 10th consecutive victory. Craig Counsell reached 899th managerial victories. Swanson’s 413-foot shot off Tanner Scott (0-1) landed in the left-field pavilion, scoring Pete Crow-Armstrong who singled leading off. The Cubs trailed 4-0 against Dodgers starter Emmet Sheehan, who allowed one earned run over 6 1/3 innings and tied his career high with 10 strikeouts. The right-hander struck out seven of the first nine batters he faced. Then Chicago got to the Dodgers’ bullpen. The Cubs scored six consecutive runs off the erratic trio of Alex Vesia, Blake Treinen and Scott. They closed to 4-3 in the seventh off Vesia. With two outs, Swanson tripled to center for two runs and Nico Hoerner followed with an RBI single. Alex Bregman homered leading off the eighth against Treinen, tying the game 4-4. Ryan Rolison (1-0) got the …

‘Baseball bat years’ continue to haunt eastern Germany, 30 years on – Revisited

‘Baseball bat years’ continue to haunt eastern Germany, 30 years on – Revisited

In the 1990s, just after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the former East Germany experienced a wave of far-right racist and political violence. In Germany, this period is known as the “baseball bat years” – a dark period that still haunts the country today.  After the fall of the Berlin Wall, in the former GDR (German Democratic Republic), skinheads with bomber jackets and combat boots made the headlines. At the time, the German police forces were discredited and the new authorities of reunified Germany were not yet operational in the east. Some young people became radicalised by the far right, attacking migrants, homosexuals and left-wing activists. Across the country, asylum centres were deliberately targeted and dozens of migrants were murdered.   Thirty years on, the spectre of those dark years is resurfacing. Racist attacks are on the rise again. The courts are trying more and more young people from the neo-Nazi movement. The rise of the far-right AfD party is giving these groups an unexpected platform of legitimacy. For those who grew up in the 1990s, history seems to be repeating itself.  FRANCE 24’s Anne Mailliet and Nick Holdsworth report.  Source link

It’s Time to Kill the MLB City Connect Jerseys

It’s Time to Kill the MLB City Connect Jerseys

The business of sports is bigger than ever, which means there’s plenty of room for some cuts. We can scale back on all things gambling, for starters. It’d be great for sports broadcasters to scale back the provocative hot takes and keep their focus on the gameplay. And then there’s the aesthetic issue: Pretty much every sports team has way too many jerseys now, and an overwhelming number of them are hideous. The NBA keeps pumping out City Editions every single year, spawning the obvious and inevitable problem of running out of ideas. The NFL, meanwhile, conjured up their Rivalries uniforms last season, with some stunning entries and a few brutal flops. Now, it’s MLB’s turn, as the 2026 City Connect harvest has bloomed. According to MLB, the purpose of the City Connect uniforms—aside from giving fans one more thing to blow cash on—is to reflect “the energy and pride of each club’s community, offering bold and expressive interpretations that celebrate both team history and what’s ahead for the game.” Since their launch in 2021, …

Orange Lutheran baseball defeats Norco to win Boras Classic South

Orange Lutheran baseball defeats Norco to win Boras Classic South

Orange Lutheran (12-3) is the midseason No. 1 team in Southern California high school baseball. The Lancers completed a four-game sweep at the Boras Classic South on Friday night, winning the championship game 4-1 over Norco. Orange Lutheran’s pitching depth was impressive all week. Ricardo Hurtado had a single and a home run and Brady Murrietta added two hits. Starting pitcher Blake Killinger was able to contain hot-hitting Norco (15-2), giving up five hits and one run in 5⅓ innings. Jacob Melendez hit his fourth home run for Norco since becoming eligible on March 27. Orange Lutheran has won two prestigious tournaments in the same year — the Boras Classic South and the National High School Invitational in North Carolina. Perhaps the Southern Section’s computer rankings will reflect that feat after the Lancers were ranked No. 51 in this week’s Southern Section power rankings. Orange Lutheran will face Northern California champion, St. Mary’s, next Saturday in the Boras Classic championship game at Santa Clara University. Kansas City Officials Are Proposing 0M in Stadium Bonds to Keep MLB’s Royals in Missouri

Kansas City Officials Are Proposing $600M in Stadium Bonds to Keep MLB’s Royals in Missouri

Kansas City, Missouri, would issue $600 million in bonds for a new downtown stadium for Major League Baseball’s Royals under a proposal officials are pursuing months after Kansas lured professional football’s Chiefs over the state line with a massive stadium subsidy. Mayor Quinton Lucas and nine of 12 City Council members introduced a proposed ordinance Thursday to allow the city manager to negotiate with the Royals over a new stadium near the city’s historic Union Station and its World War I museum, about 6 miles northwest of the Royals’ current Kauffman Stadium. The city expects the new stadium to cost $1.9 billion, and Missouri last year enacted a law allowing the state to cover half, or $950 million. If Kansas City issued its bonds, the Royals would need $350 million in private funds. Kauffman Stadium sits beside the Chiefs’ Arrowhead Stadium in the Truman Sports Complex, owned by Jackson County, Missouri, and home to both teams since 1973. Their stadium leases expire in 2031, and in April 2024, county voters rejected extending a tax that …
