Dean McKay has been jailed for 27 months (Image: Alexander Lawrie / Edinburgh Live) A man who battered a dog to death with a metal pole has been jailed for 27 months and sentenced to a lifetime ban from owning or keeping animals. Dean McKay, 38, brutally attacked a female German Shepherd named Goldie after chasing the dog’s owner, Kyle Pugh, into a Premier store in the Calder Park area of Edinburgh in May 2024. McKay kicked the dog to the body before killing her by smashing her over the head with the metal pole which broke the dog’s neck, the Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard last month. McKay was with Daniel Devlin, 39, who also confronted Mr Pugh while armed with a knife and a claw hammer. The pair fled the scene after the attack. An armed response team quickly arrived and sealed off the surrounding area. Downpours and high winds are likely to continue after Storm Ingrid wreaked havoc in the South West and washed away part of a historic pier in Devon, the Met Office said.It will be a wet weekend for many, with yellow weather warnings for heavy rain in place across parts of Northern Ireland, Scotland and south-west England and Wales.A yellow warning is in place for an area covering Somerset, Devon and Cornwall and much of south Wales until 10pm on Saturday, while separate warnings in Northern Ireland and Scotland will run until 9am on Sunday. Storm Goretti has battered the UK, with tens of thousands of Britons across the country facing widespread power cuts, travel disruption and school closures. The winter storm brought 99mph winds and a rare red warning was issued by the Met Office for “dangerous, stormy” winds in the south-west. Officials in the West Midlands warned of the “worst snowfall in a decade” with 5-10cm of snow on Friday, and up to 15-25cm in some areas. Flights, trains and ferries were cancelled, motorists faced long delays and thousands of properties were left without power across the UK and Ireland after Storm Bram brought heavy rain and strong winds. By Tuesday night, there were more than 300 flood warnings or alerts across the UK and sporting matches and festive events were cancelled because of the weather. High waves battered coastlines, and in some parts of the UK two weeks’ typical seasonal rainfall fell in little over 24 hours. The Met Office reported that 11.2cm of rain fell on White Barrow on Dartmoor in Devon in the 24 hours up to 3pm on Tuesday. At nearby Princetown there was 7.9cm. The December average total for Princetown is about 20cm. In Treherbert in south Wales, 8.4cm fell. Gusts of 83mph were recorded in Capel Curig and Aberdaron in north Wales. The UK Met Office’s amber weather warnings – the second most severe – remained in place for north-west Scotland and Northern Ireland into Tuesday night.
