Twenty Twenty Six review: Hugh Bonneville’s bumbling Ian Fletcher is back in BBC’s comedy treat

Twenty Twenty Six review: Hugh Bonneville’s bumbling Ian Fletcher is back in BBC’s comedy treat

Hugh Bonneville’s bumbling and bemused Ian Fletcher is back. But this time, he’s blundering his way through corporate crises across the pond to oversee the planning of the FIFA World Cup.  Ian has quite the CV. In Twenty Twelve, a mockumentary about a fictional committee tasked with planning the 2012 Olympic Games, he was Head of Deliverance of the Olympic Deliverance Commission. Its sequel, W1A, saw him become the BBC’s Head of Values. Now, nearly a decade later, Ian has embarked on a new chapter in Miami as Director of Integrity for the 2026 football tournament, which David Tennant’s narrator tells us is “a key post”. © BBC/Expectation/ANA BLUMENKRONHugh Bonneville reprises his role as Ian Fletcher Fans of the first two series can expect more of the same as Ian is faced with another ragtag bunch of quirky characters with nonsense job titles. But this time, his employees are far more direct, and unlike in W1A, not every idea is “brilliant”.   © BBC/Expectation Entertainment/Jack BarnesIan is faced with a new group of hapless colleagues …

BBC’s 5-part drama Better is perfect for Line of Duty fans – and it gets ‘stronger and stronger’

BBC’s 5-part drama Better is perfect for Line of Duty fans – and it gets ‘stronger and stronger’

The BBC has established itself as the platform to go for gritty police dramas, with Line of Duty really cementing its status. Fans are currently waiting for the show’s seventh season, but if you need to fill the void, then there’s another show perfect for that itch. Released back in 2023, Better is a five-part drama that follows a corrupt police officer, played by Leila Farzad, who attempts to turn her life around, but finds that her past isn’t easy to escape… With its focus on corrupt officers, while also providing a human look at its central characters, the show is easily comparable to the long-running drama that has won over audiences and critics alike. A synopsis for the show, which is still available to stream on iPlayer, reads: “A corrupt police detective has a painful moral awakening and decides to put right 20 years of wrongdoing.” However, there wasn’t just drama on-screen, as away from the gritty police drama, the show’s lead stars, Leila Farzad and Andrew Buchan, ended up together, with the pair …

Baftas N-Word Broadcast Breached BBC’s Editorial Standards, Investigation Finds

Baftas N-Word Broadcast Breached BBC’s Editorial Standards, Investigation Finds

The BBC has determined that the broadcast of a racial slur during its coverage of this year’s Baftas went against its editorial standards. During this year’s Baftas ceremony, Tourette’s campaigner John Davidson – attending the ceremony with the cast and crew of the movie I Swear – experienced a series of involuntary tics, resulting in him shouting a variety of slurs from the audience. One of these, which saw him shouting the N-word while Sinners actors Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting on stage – was included in the BBC’s broadcast of the Baftas, which aired on a two-hour time delay. Following the event, the BBC faced a wave of scrutiny – and a “large number of complaints” – due to the slur’s inclusion, with outgoing director-general Tim Davie “fast-tracking” an investigation into how it came to be broadcast. On Wednesday, chief content officer Kate Phillips confirmed that the BBC’s executive complaints unit (ECU) had “found this should not have made it to air and it was a clear breach of our editorial …

Viewers left uneasy over BBC’s ‘sensitive’ 2-part factual drama about Sarah Everard

Viewers left uneasy over BBC’s ‘sensitive’ 2-part factual drama about Sarah Everard

TV viewers have been left feeling uneasy over the BBC‘s latest announcement that a two-part factual drama will portray the events surrounding the murder of Sarah Everard. Sarah was abducted, raped and murdered by Wayne Couzens, a serving member of the Metropolitan Police, as she walked home from a friend’s house in Clapham, south London, on 3 March 2021. News of Sarah’s death sparked a national outcry, with many taking to the streets to protest institutional misogyny and failings within policing, as well as to call for greater awareness around women’s safety. The case remains an extremely sensitive subject, leaving some viewers questioning the necessity of a factual drama so soon after the events. The series is written by BAFTA-winning Jeff Pope, who has created other factual dramas based on real-life cases including Little Boy Blue, Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes and A Confession. According to the BBC, the drama will be handled with “sensitivity and respect”, and the production team has been in contact with Sarah’s family. © Everard family & …

BBC’s new director general appointed at an existential moment for the broadcaster

BBC’s new director general appointed at an existential moment for the broadcaster

The BBC has appointed former Google executive Matt Brittin as its new director general. Brittin will replace outgoing director general Tim Davie. He resigned last year in the wake of revelations about the editing of a Panorama documentary about Donald Trump and board disagreements over how it should be handled. Brittin’s appointment comes at a critical moment, as the broadcaster prepares to renew its royal charter. This is the constitutional basis for the BBC’s existence, which sets out its mission and public purposes. It is traditionally renewed once a decade to make sure the BBC keeps up to date with political and technological changes. Because the renewal process is run by the government of the day, it can involve difficult conversations with ministers who – while acknowledging the BBC’s independence – can insist on major changes. Despite some challenging political environments, each charter renewal has generally resulted in an evolution from previous years. The BBC has moved from radio to TV, from analogue to digital and online. But this time around feels more existential. In …
