Ali Cherri Files Complaint Against Israel Over Beirut Bombing

Lebanese artist Ali Cherri, together with the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), has filed a civil complaint in France calling for an investigation into Israeli authorities’ bombing of a residential building in Beirut in November 2024, which killed seven civilians, including the artist’s mother and father. The complaint, filed on April 2 with the French War Crimes Unit against unknown perpetrators, draws on a reconstruction and analysis of the attack by Forensic Architecture (FA) and Amnesty International. Reviewing footage of the aftermath, FA reported identifying remnants of GBU-39 munitions—extensively documented as used by the Israeli air force.  Related Articles The strike hit four floors of the residential building, including the apartment belonging to Mahmoud and Nadira Cherri, as well as their domestic aide, Birki Negesa. A digital reconstruction of the aftermath shared by FA shows the completely blown-out façade of the ninth floor, where the artist’s parents lived, with rubble strewn across it. The eighth and seventh floors were also destroyed. Based on digital reconstruction work by FA, supported by documentation from Amnesty International, …

Israel renews strikes on south Beirut as Hezbollah says clashed with Israeli forces in south

Israel renews strikes on south Beirut as Hezbollah says clashed with Israeli forces in south

Israeli army spokesperson Effie Defrin said that “contrary to the declaration by the Lebanese government earlier this year – Hezbollah is still operating and conducting attacks from southern Lebanon.” “If the Lebanese government will not disarm Hezbollah, the IDF will,” he said, referring to the Israeli armed forces. Lebanese authorities say more than 1,100 people have been killed and more than one million others have been displaced, including some 136,000 staying in collective shelters. The United Nations refugee agency’s representative in Lebanon, Karolina Lindholm Billing, warned that “the situation remains extremely worrying and the risk of a humanitarian catastrophe … is real.” Nicolas Von Arx, regional director of the International Committee of the Red Cross, warned that “the humanitarian situation is worsening and civilians, as usual, are paying the highest price” in Lebanon.  After meeting Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, he said that “civilians must be protected wherever they are, whether they remain in their homes or are forced to flee”. Inside the Palestinian camp in Beirut where residents are staying put, for now

A FRANCE 24 team visited the Palestinian camp of Bourj el-Barajneh in the heart of Beirut’s southern suburbs, which are frequently struck by Israeli airstrikes. Yet here, many people say they have little choice but to stay. Bourj el-Barajneh was established in 1948 after Palestinians were forced to leave their homes in what became known as the Nakba (‘catastrophe’). Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon have evolved from tent settlements into permanent but deprived neighbourhoods. Keywords for this article Source link

Israel strikes south Lebanon, Beirut suburbs as Hezbollah keeps up attacks

BEIRUT: Israel launched strikes on south Lebanon and Beirut’s southern suburbs on Wednesday (Mar 25), Lebanese state media said, as Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah said it kept up attacks on Israeli troops. Lebanon was pulled into the Middle East war when Hezbollah began firing rockets into Israel on Mar 2 to avenge the killing of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Israel, which occupied southern Lebanon for around two decades until 2000, has intensified strikes across Lebanon and sent ground troops into the country’s south since the latest bout of fighting began. On Tuesday, it said its military would take control of the border area up to the Litani River, around 30km from the frontier. Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported Israeli strikes and artillery shelling in several locations in south Lebanon on Wednesday. It also said that “enemy warplanes … launched a strike” on Beirut’s southern suburbs, after Israel’s military late Tuesday renewed an evacuation warning for several districts in the Hezbollah stronghold. An AFP correspondent saw a street covered in debris including …

Israel strikes south Beirut, says captured Hezbollah members

HAZMIYEH, Lebanon: Israeli strikes hit Beirut’s southern suburbs on Monday (Mar 23), the first attack on the Hezbollah stronghold in days, as its military said it had captured two members of the Iran-backed group in southern Lebanon. An earlier Israeli strike had hit the upscale, predominantly Christian area of Hazmieh near Beirut, with Israel saying it targeted a member of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards’ foreign operations arm. AFPTV’s live broadcast showed a cloud of smoke over the capital’s southern suburbs, and Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported several strikes on the area. The Israeli military also announced it was “striking Hezbollah infrastructure in Beirut” after having called on residents to leave the southern suburbs beforehand. Lebanon was pulled into the Middle East war when Hezbollah began firing rockets into Israel on Mar 2 to avenge the killing of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in an Israeli-US attack. Israel has since launched strikes across Lebanon, killing at least 1,039 people, and sent ground troops into the country’s south. In a statement on Monday, the Israeli …

Beirut photographer puts himself in the firing line to capture Israeli strikes

Fadel Itani is no stranger to Israeli strikes in his hometown. The 39-year-old photographer from Beirut captured a stunning sequence of images in the early hours of Wednesday, showing an Israeli missile demolishing a tower block in one fell swoop. Itani, a freelance photographer with more than 16 years experience, told NBC News that he learned about the incoming strike from an alert sent by the Israel Defense Forces. Fadel Itani.Courtesy of Fadel Itani It warned residents to evacuate the Bashoura neighborhood in Lebanon’s capital where it said the Iran-backed militant group, Hezbollah, was operating. “For the last two weeks, bombs have been dropping on Beirut,” he said, speaking from his home Wednesday. While others fled the incoming strike, Itani headed in the opposite direction. Hopping onto his motorbike, he made the short journey from his family home and positioned himself behind a parking lot some 400 yards away from the site the Israeli military said it was targeting. Carrying only his camera and a wide-angle lens, he watched and waited wearing a protective vest …
