Inside the Oscars winners’ room: Standing ovations, party plans, and media bingo | Ents & Arts News

After Oscar winners collect their golden statuettes on stage at the Dolby Theatre, they are brought into rooms outside to have their photos taken and answer questions from journalists. For this year’s Academy Awards, this was my spot – a front-row seat to the stars everyone is talking about. The room holds several hundred reporters and there’s an Oscar-worthy buffet in the hallway outside to keep us going all day. All the journalists are hoping to be selected to ask a question. Each winner is limited to answering about three to four and you show interest by holding up numbered cards. It’s then up to a moderator to select which reporters get to ask away. But it’s not just about questions. It’s about witnessing those little moments behind the scenes, the things you don’t get to see on TV. There’s a buzz in the room that builds and builds as the big winners come in towards the end, with one star in particular eliciting a lot of love from the journalists. Here are the best …

Judge allows Hafa Adai Bingo case defendant to travel to South Korea

Judge allows Hafa Adai Bingo case defendant to travel to South Korea

A federal judge in the U.S. District Court of Guam has approved a request by a defendant in the high-profile Hafa Adai Bingo case to travel overseas. The accused is part of the ongoing case and has her itinerary approved to visit South Korea, despite ongoing proceedings tied to illegal gambling and money-laundering allegations. Judge approves travel for Hafa Adai Bingo defendant Won Sun Min, one of several defendants charged in connection with the alleged illegal bingo operation, has been granted permission to travel to South Korea between January 6 and January 15, 2026, according to court documents. Federal prosecutors have put forward an argument that says the actions of these individuals, including Min, generated millions of dollars in proceeds, violated U.S. laws governing illegal gambling businesses, and their actions involved money-laundering conspiracies to conceal or distribute proceeds. Min has already pleaded guilty to some charges and agreed to forfeit $930,143.07 of the illegally gained proceeds. Min’s travel green lit despite federal allegations “The defendants operated Hafa Adai Bingo as an illegal gambling business by …

Forget buzzword bingo. Here’s how to get it right

Forget buzzword bingo. Here’s how to get it right

If you spend enough time in education, you start to see a pattern. We latch onto an idea, roll out a series of INSET days, laminate an acronym on a poster, reduce it to four key sentences that can be stuck to a lanyard and then move onto the next initiative a year later. Is it any wonder that nothing really changes? This isn’t progress. In the last five years, awareness of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), trauma and attachment has developed. But the way schools respond often feels like quick-fix buzzword bingo. We have trauma-informed practice. Trauma-aware practice. Trauma-sensitive practice. Trauma-responsive practice. Yet with so many variations and no shared definition, the meaning becomes diluted to the point where little changes.  Now the word “belonging” is everywhere, the latest umbrella term meant to cover trauma, attachment, neuroscience, behaviour, wellbeing and everything else we can squeeze under it. But when a word is used too freely, it frays at the edges. No silver bullet And here’s the thing: there isn’t a silver bullet. Tidy uniforms, rewards …

Start 2026 by playing Plant Bingo in Southern California

Start 2026 by playing Plant Bingo in Southern California

Welcome to 2026! Cue the horns, confetti 🎉 and sighs of relief that we can finally put 2025 behind us. We have a good list of January plant-related activities below. Note that January is the traditional time to start pruning roses and fruit trees in Southern California. But first, I have to tell you about a new gaming opportunity taking greater L.A. by storm. There are pop-up Plant Bingo events where the game cards feature houseplants and the prizes are — you guessed it — glossy houseplants. Bingo is one of those games that gets under your skin, with the enduring hope that next time, you’ll get the winning numbers. That quest is certainly fueling interest in Plant Bingo events in Southern California, but local organizers say learning about plants, and getting a chance to win a plant, appears just as important. “People just really love Plant Bingo now,” said Genevieve Aleman, who, with her business (and life) partner Donovan Moreno, owns the Greenprint Co. in Riverside. They’ve been offering multiple pop-up Plant Bingo nights …
