Bite mechanics of ancient marine predators yields surprising results

Bite mechanics of ancient marine predators yields surprising results

The Western Interior Seaway, which existed roughly 80 million years ago, split North America into North and South. It was a warm, shallow sea teeming with life from the Arctic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico. Fish, squid, and marine reptiles—the lizards that hunted them—inhabited this bountiful marine desert. Some of these predators included large-bodied, or sometimes giant-sized, mosasaurs. These semi-aquatic reptiles re-evolved to live in the ocean, along with long-necked polycotylids. To date, how did so many large predators exist and thrive in the same aquatic space without exhausting their food supply? This has been the focus of an international research collaboration, yet only now is there a comprehensive biomechanical answer based on recent 3D scanning, engineering simulation, and experimentation. The results provide clear evidence of the biomechanical differences between mosasaurs and polycotylids. These distinct physiological configurations represent distinct ecologies and prey types rather than direct competitors. A second fatal rattlesnake bite on a Southern California hiking trail

A Ventura County woman has become the second to die recently from a rattlesnake bite on a Southern California hiking trail during an unusually active period of snake attacks and unseasonably warm weather. The Ventura County Fire Department has received four reports of rattlesnake bites since March 14, according to department spokesperson Andrew Dowd. In comparison, the county recorded nine total bites in 2025. The department responded to a call for a bite on a hiking trail at Wildwood Park just before noon on March 14. Paramedics took lifesaving measures and airlifted the patient to a local hospital for treatment. The woman who was bitten, later identified as 46-year-old Gabriela Bautista of Moorpark, died March 19 as a result of rattlesnake venom toxicity, according to the Ventura County medical examiner’s office. The following day, the county Fire Department rescued a teenage girl from the Wendy Trail in Newbury Park after she suffered a rattlesnake bite. Firefighters hiked up to access the bite victim and used a special wheeled stretcher to bring her down and transport …

‘Build-to-rent’ houses are taking a bite out of the housing crunch : NPR

Homes are under construction at a new housing development in Richmond, Calif., on July 1, 2025. Justin Sullivan/Getty Images hide caption toggle caption Justin Sullivan/Getty Images When Joanne LaZette was looking for a new home in Mesa, Ariz., in 2022, she knew she didn’t want an apartment. Hallways filled with screaming kids? No, thanks. But homeownership has its own troubles, like a hefty price tag — and for LaZette, the responsibility of maintaining a place on her own at age 87. Instead, LaZette found a way to avoid both apartments and ownership. She rented a brand-new house that was specifically built not for sale, but for tenants like her. “I share no walls with anybody, and it’s like having my own private little house that I just rent,” LaZette said. About 7% of new single-family houses hitting the market are now for rent, not sale. More than 10 times as many “build-to-rent” homes were completed in the U.S. in 2024 as compared with a decade earlier. Many of these are being constructed by firms that …

More Bark Than Bite: Kaine’s War Powers Resolution Is An ‘Imminent’ Failure

More Bark Than Bite: Kaine’s War Powers Resolution Is An ‘Imminent’ Failure

Authored by Jonathan Turley, We now have a glimpse of the War Powers Resolution promised by Sen. Tim Kaine (D., Va.), which is reportedly scheduled for a vote in the Senate today or Wednesday. The resolution purportedly ends all combat operations against Iran … until you reach the very end where there is a hole that you could drive a combat task force through. I respect members asserting their inherent constitutional authority. I have long criticized the lack of declarations of war as demanded by the Framers. We have not had a formal declaration of war since World War II. However, courts and Congress have long deferred to presidents in the conduct of such operations. I represented congressional members challenging the Libyan war operation launched by President Barack Obama. Most Democratic members were entirely silent when Obama (and President Joe Biden) exercised such authority against different countries. Notably, the Libyan operation clearly sought regime change without an imminent threat to the United States. Some of those members are now the loudest condemning President Donald Trump …

Palo Alto Networks cuts annual profit forecast as deal costs bite, shares fall

Feb 17 : Palo Alto Networks trimmed its annual profit forecast on Tuesday, signaling rising costs from recent acquisitions to enhance AI capabilities, sending the cybersecurity company’s shares down nearly 8 per cent in extended trading. The company announced on Tuesday the acquisition of Israeli cybersecurity startup Koi, following last July’s purchase of CyberArk Software for about $25 billion in its largest deal to date and the buyout of Chronosphere in November, as it steps up efforts to counter AI-driven cyber threats. Palo Alto said its acquisition-related costs jumped to $24 million in the second quarter, from $10 million a year earlier. The company expects a $2.3 billion cash expenditure in the third fiscal quarter for the CyberArk acquisition, following the $2.6 billion spent on Chronosphere in the prior quarter. While acquisitions expand the total addressable market, the company has acknowledged the challenge of effectively integrating larger acquired companies, such as CyberArk, which require more reengineering and restructuring. The company now expects adjusted profit per share of $3.65 to $3.70 for its fiscal 2026, down …

L.A. shelter didn’t disclose a dog’s bite history. That cost the city $3.25 million

In the video, a gray pit bull named Valerio stood on a woman’s lap, furiously wagging his tail as he accepted her caresses. “I’m the best boy ever! I love to play. I love snuggling and I’ll let you put silly costumes on me,” said the caption on the Feb. 14, 2022, Instagram post. Kristin Wright responded: “I work so it’s a little crazy. Can valeria just get in the back seat of my car.” That August, two days after Wright adopted 4-year-old Valerio from the city animal shelter in South Los Angeles, he attacked her, breaking her right arm and peeling skin off her left arm. Only later did Wright discover that Valerio was surrendered to the shelter after biting his previous owner’s elderly mother in the face. Wright and her husband sued the city, reaching a $3.25-million settlement in November. Wright, 75, said she never would have adopted Valerio had she known of his violent history. After multiple surgeries, she still has nerve damage and pain in her fingers and hands, making it …
