JPM Stock Fizzles Despite Blowout Quarter As Key Forecast Cut

JPM Stock Fizzles Despite Blowout Quarter As Key Forecast Cut

One day after Goldman Sachs reported its highest profit in 5 years (despite an ugly miss in FICC revenues), this morning JPMorgan impressed with just as solid results, when it reported that its Q1 profits rose 13% as the bank benefited from soaring market volatility and frantic trading amid the war with Iran and the US military operation in Venezuela. The largest US bank reported net income of $16.5bn, beating analyst estimates of a $15.2bn print, up from $14.6bn a year ago and the bank’s second-best quarter ever. Its best quarter remains the $18.1bn the bank earned in the second quarter of 2024 when JPMorgan benefited from a one-off gain from the sale of its stake in Visa.  One-upping Goldman, JPM reported the best quarter for trading in the bank’s history, boosted by the swings in equity and fixed income markets caused by geopolitical shocks. And unlike Goldman, JPM’s FICC also came in much stronger than expected; in fact at $7.1bn it was the second biggest FICC revenue on record.   The bank reported total trading revenues …

Gore Wins 1st Start, Nimmo and McCutchen Hit 1st Homers for Rangers in Blowout of Phillies

Gore Wins 1st Start, Nimmo and McCutchen Hit 1st Homers for Rangers in Blowout of Phillies

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Andrew McCutchen shrugged like Michael Jordan and offered a mock apology to a Phillies fan after he crossed the plate following his first home run with Texas. Brandon Nimmo went deep, too — his first home run since he was traded to the Rangers only further flamed anger in the Phillies fans who voraciously booed the former New York Mets rival from his first at-bat of the three-game series to the last. MacKenzie Gore tormented Philadelphia at his last stop, as well. He struck out 13 Phillies in his first start last season with Washington. Gore kept up his success against the Phillies in his first start with the Rangers, taking a no-hitter into the sixth and then escaping a jam later that inning when he fanned two-time NL MVP Bryce Harper with the bases loaded in an 8-3 win on Sunday. First homers and a fantastic first start from Gore helped the Rangers take two of three from the NL East champion Phillies. Oh, and for those Rangers fans keeping score …

Anthropic Blowout With Military Involved Use of Claude for Incoming Nuclear Strike

Anthropic Blowout With Military Involved Use of Claude for Incoming Nuclear Strike

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Anthropic’s ongoing battle with the Pentagon over the military’s use of its AI systems flared up this week around a hypothetical nuclear strike scenario, according to new reporting from the Washington Post. The Claude AI builder has frustrated the Pentagon by objecting to its systems being used for autonomous weaponry and the mass surveillance of US citizens. To cut to the heart of the debate, a defense official told WaPo, the Pentagon’s technology chief posed an extreme hypothetical: would Anthropic let the military use Claude to help shoot down a nuclear-armed intercontinental ballistic missile? Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s response apparently irritated Pentagon leaders. “You could call us and we’d work it out,” was how the defense source characterized it, in WaPo’s words. An Anthropic spokesperson denied that Amodei gave that response and called the account “patently false.” The company had agreed to allow Claude to be used for missile defense, they said. Be that as it may, it’s clear …

Oops! Nvidia’s Stock Is Falling Again After Its “Blowout” Earnings Report

Oops! Nvidia’s Stock Is Falling Again After Its “Blowout” Earnings Report

Illustration by Tag Hartman-Simkins / Futurism. Source: Yui Mok / Pool / AFP via Getty Images On Wednesday night, Nvidia released its highly anticipated-slashed-dreaded quarterly earnings report — and Wall Street let out a sigh of relief, at least initially. The multitrillion dollar chipmaker at the center of the AI boom reported a ludicrous $57 billion in quarterly revenue, netting it nearly $32 billion in profit. Compared to the same quarter from the year before, it amounted to a 62 percent surge in sales, and a further 65 percent increase in profit. Nvidia’s stock spiked by over four percent when trading resumed on Thursday morning. Other tech stocks received a boost, too, as did the S&P 500 overall. The chipmaker’s “blowout” quarter calmed fears of an AI bubble bursting on the horizon. If the nearly $5 trillion behemoth responsible for providing the hardware used by AI makers was still seeing its profits balloon, then perhaps the economy collapsing wasn’t in the cards just yet, and everyone could feel secure about pouring more money into AI. But …
