Beijing Boosts BeiDou Satellite System To Try And Compete With GPS

Beijing Boosts BeiDou Satellite System To Try And Compete With GPS

China is upgrading its BeiDou satellite navigation system, a domestic alternative to GPS, to expand its global reach and industry use, according to South China Morning Post. The plan involves replacing older satellites with newer third-generation models and adjusting their orbits to improve worldwide coverage. The system will be streamlined from 50 to 37 active satellites, most operating in medium Earth orbit like GPS and Europe’s Galileo. A few satellites will remain in specialized orbits to improve signal reliability in certain regions, including areas linked to China’s Belt and Road Initiative. The upgraded network will mainly use newer BDS-3 satellites, which are more accurate and advanced, while older BDS-2 units will be retired. The SCMP writes that China also aims to boost international adoption of BeiDou, especially in Belt and Road countries where it’s already used in shipping, agriculture, and transport. The upgrade supports a broader strategy to integrate space, air, and ground systems and expand satellite technology across industries. Officials expect BeiDou’s value to reach about $145 billion within five years. In addition, the overhaul …

New AT&T Elite 2.0 Phone Plan Boosts Wireless Hotspot and Data Performance

New AT&T Elite 2.0 Phone Plan Boosts Wireless Hotspot and Data Performance

Only a few weeks after overhauling its unlimited phone plans, AT&T has added a new plan to the top of the lineup that offers more data and performance — for a higher price. The AT&T Elite 2.0 plan is available now. For a single line, Elite 2.0 costs $110 (plus taxes and fees). As more lines are added, the per-line price goes down. AT&T customers can mix and match plans on an account, but if we assume everyone is signing up for the Elite 2.0 plan, the costs break down like this: • One line: $110• Two lines: $100 per line, $200 total• Three lines: $85 per line, $255 total• Four lines: $75 per line, $300 total• Five lines: $75 per line, $375 total To compare it with AT&T’s next-priciest option, the Premium 2.0 plan costs $90 for a single line, or $55 per line on an account with four lines. What’s included in the AT&T Elite 2.0 plan For those amounts, the plan includes unlimited high-speed 5G data, prioritized even during network congestion, just like …

How Trump’s tax law boosts the wealthy and leaves behind some workers he promised to help

How Trump’s tax law boosts the wealthy and leaves behind some workers he promised to help

“It’s a little relief, but it’s not enough relief, not at all,” she added. Trump has repeatedly touted “no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, no tax on Social Security” as a key success of his second term since his “big, beautiful bill” passed last year. Many Americans are benefiting from the tax changes in the bill: The average refund this tax season was $3,521, about $350 more than last year, according to IRS data as of March 27. The White House has said the extra cash in people’s pockets will help boost the economy. “People are just now talking about receiving larger refunds than they ever thought possible,” Trump said April 1 during a prime-time address focused on the war with Iran. “They are getting so much more money than they thought. That’s from the great, big, beautiful bill.” But some middle-income households are finding the benefits are smaller than they anticipated because of how certain tax cuts are structured, according to interviews with workers, accountants and tax policy analysts. Large groups, including …

Kia boosts investment plan by 30% over the next four years; shares fall

Kia boosts investment plan by 30% over the next four years; shares fall

SEOUL, April 9 : South Korean automaker Kia Corp plans to boost its investment plan over the next four years by 30 per cent to boost vehicle electrification, software and other new businesses, according to an investor presentation on Thursday. The company plans to raise its investments to 41.4 trillion won ($27.95 billion) from 2026 to 2029, it said. The presentation also showed Kia cut its 2030 target for electric vehicle sales by about 20 per cent to 1 million units, reflecting weaker demand and the scrapping of EV subsidies in the U.S. last year. Shares in the automaker slid, trading down 4.2 per cent after earlier having risen as much as 2.5 per cent. Kia also said it plans to introduce a test version of its so-called software-defined vehicles by the end of 2027, which would mark a one-year delay. Hyundai Motor Group had touted the SDVs, which allow vehicles to improve features and functions constantly similar to Tesla vehicles. Kia also said it plans to launch a model equipped with semi-automated driving technology …

Iraq Tells Buyers To Collect Crude Which Can Now Cross Hormuz, While US Boosts Ship Reinsurance Guarantees To BN

Iraq Tells Buyers To Collect Crude Which Can Now Cross Hormuz, While US Boosts Ship Reinsurance Guarantees To $40BN

Over the long weekend, we reported that with traffic across the Hormuz strait continuing to rise, and reaching the highest since the war began, one particularly favorable development was Iran’s permission for Iraqi ships to use the Strait. We also noted that this declaration had the potential to unleash as much as 3 million barrels a day of Iraqi oil cargoes. That said, there was the caveat that it was not immediately clear if the exemption will apply to all Iraqi oil or just the nation’s tankers, or indeed how it will be enforced. Furthermore, an Iraqi official cautioned that the usefulness of the exemption will depend on whether shipping companies are willing to risk entering the strait to collect cargoes. Today Iraq underscored this last point when the Gulf state told traders and refiners they can collect crude cargoes as vessels carrying the country’s oil are now able to transit the Strait of Hormuz thanks to an Iranian exemption, testing buyers’ confidence in the security guarantee. In a notice sent on Sunday, the country’s State …

The price increases took place in FIFA’s latest sales window that kicked off on Wednesday, with 40 out of 104 games now costing more than in the last sales window, according to an NPR examination of prices. The hikes can be stark. The most expensive “Category 1” tickets for the final will now cost $10,990, a broad area that covers most of the lower two bowls of MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where the last game of the tournament will be held in July. That’s significantly more than the nearly $8,700 at which these tickets were priced in FIFA’s previous …

Los Alamos neutron detector boosts accuracy in extreme radiation

Los Alamos neutron detector boosts accuracy in extreme radiation

A research team at Los Alamos National Laboratory has unveiled a new neutron detector designed to deliver accurate measurements across a wide range of radiation conditions, addressing long-standing technical and supply challenges in neutron detection. The system, known as the Integrated Composite Optical Neutron Sensor (ICONS), is currently patent-pending and is intended to operate reliably in both low-background environments and high-radiation settings. The development reflects growing demand for tools that can measure neutrons with precision in applications ranging from nuclear security to advanced energy research. Addressing a persistent measurement problem Accurately measuring neutrons has historically been difficult due to the nature of the particles themselves. Unlike charged particles, neutrons do not interact easily with matter, making detection inherently complex. The challenge is compounded by environmental variability: in some scenarios, neutron levels are extremely low, while in others they spike dramatically. Background radiation adds another layer of difficulty. Gamma radiation, which often accompanies neutron emissions, can obscure signals and lead to inaccurate readings in conventional systems. As a result, neutron detection technologies must be both highly …

MHRA boosts drive to end animal testing with tech developments

MHRA boosts drive to end animal testing with tech developments

The MHRA has taken decisive action to phase out animal testing by helping developers make better use of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs). By offering early reviews of non-animal data and clarifying how it will be assessed, the initiative gives developers greater confidence in developing marketing applications based on evidence generated without animal testing. The move supports the UK Government’s long-term strategy to reduce the use of animals in drug development, where complete elimination isn’t yet feasible, and to ensure medicines continue to meet rigorous safety standards. Julian Beach, MHRA Interim Executive Director, Healthcare Quality and Access, explained: “A clearer regulatory route for medicines developed without animal testing will help accelerate the transition to modern, predictive science and support the government’s strategy to reduce and ultimately replace animals in research. “Advances such as AI‑driven analysis and human‑derived cell models mean some medicines no longer require animal studies to demonstrate safety and efficacy.” Phasing out animal testing in the medicine industry Phasing out the use of animals in science and product development must be supported by reliable …
