Have you used the new EU border system, EES? We would like to hear from you | Travel

The new EU entry-exit system (EES) has caused huge delays at border checks, with some people waiting for up to three hours, airports say. Passengers in airports in countries such as France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain and Greece are waiting several hours, the Airports Council International (ACI) body has said. Tell us about your experience – has the new system worked well or have you experienced delays? How long did you have to wait? What did you do to pass the time? Or maybe you are in a queue now? Russia mysteriously closes off Arctic waters for ‘missile landing zone’ near NATO border | World | News

Russia mysteriously closes off Arctic waters for ‘missile landing zone’ near NATO border | World | News

Russia has warned ships and aircraft to avoid large areas of the Barents Sea off northern Norway, designating them as “impact areas for Russian missiles” ahead of a planned space launch. The zones — north of Varanger and northeast of Bear Island — will remain restricted until April 30, in an unusually long safety notice for the region. Despite the alarming wording, the “missile” reference is apparently Russian terminology for rocket launches, where discarded parts of a space rocket are formally classified as falling “missile elements.” In this case, the warning relates to a Soyuz-2-1b launch from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome, likely around April 23. As the rocket ascends, large metal structures known as payload fairings are jettisoned and fall back to Earth and two such components are expected to splash down in the designated areas. The alerts were issued through both aviation and maritime safety systems, advising seafarers to steer clear of the zones during the window. The mission is expected to carry a batch of Rassvet broadband satellites, part of Vladimir Putin’s push to …

Funding Effort for ICE, Border Patrol Could Begin in Senate Next Week, Majority Leader Says

WASHINGTON, April 14 (Reuters) – Partisan legislation to fund Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement activities through the end of his presidency in January 2029 could begin moving through the U.S. Senate by the end of this month, according to Republican senators and aides. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a Republican, is pushing for quick action on a bill ‌that would pave the way for ‌funding Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the U.S. Border Patrol, which are parts of the Department of Homeland Security. He told reporters on Tuesday the full Senate could begin work “as early as next week.” The Senate is scheduled to begin a week-long recess on May 1. This year’s annual funding for ICE and Border Patrol has been held up amid a disagreement between congressional Republicans and Democrats over imposing new operating procedures for the two agencies. ‘Race to the border’ as Islamic State group and JNIM clash in Niger

For the first time, the Islamic State group and Al-Qaeda affiliate JNIM have clashed in West Africa’s Niger. While previous confrontations between the two jihadist groups had taken place in the tri-border area with Mali and Burkina Faso, they are now spreading toward a new border region between Niger, Nigeria, and Benin, in what FRANCE 24’s Wassim Nasr describes as a “race to the border” as the two groups vie for resources and recruits. Family Sues US Over 8-Year-Old’s Death in Custody After Crossing the Border

McALLEN, Texas (AP) — The Honduran family of an 8-year-old girl with a heart condition who died in U.S. custody after crossing the border in 2023 sued the federal government on Friday. An internal CPB investigation found found failures in providing proper medical care and that medical personnel did not review documents the mother offered which described the girl’s sensitive condition. In custody, Anadith had a high fever of 104.9 F (40.5 C) as well as nausea, breathing difficulties and pain. Despite pleas from her mom, the child was not taken to a hospital until her body went limp in her mother’s arms. Mabel Alvarez Benedicks described her daughter’s death in an emotional interview with The Associated Press later that week. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the lawsuit. Friday’s wrongful death lawsuit follows a tort claim made against the government last year which was denied in October. The lawsuit is seeking to cover damages suffered by the family but does not request a specific …

Canada top court weighs Ontario cross border online gambling case as Loto-Québec joins fight

Canada top court weighs Ontario cross border online gambling case as Loto-Québec joins fight

Canada’s top court is stepping into a case that could reshape how online gambling works across the country, with provinces, regulators and global operators all lining up to weigh in. New filings and the court’s own docket show Loto-Québec is now formally part of the appeal, joining other provincial lottery bodies pushing back against Ontario’s plan to open its system beyond national borders. The case surrounds the proposed model that would let people in Ontario play and place bets with users outside Canada. Filed under Supreme Court docket number 42141, Ontario asked the courts in 2024 to rule on whether its idea would be legal before fully rolling it out. This makes this a constitutional reference, where judges are asked to assess a hypothetical framework rather than rule on past conduct. As one submission puts it, the reference “necessarily posed a hypothetical question… and the hypothetical facts must be accepted” . Who is fighting in Ontario gambling case and why it matters What started as a legal question from Ontario has quickly turned into a …

Welsh schoolboy, 9, stuck abroad and unable to fly home after border control block

A schoolboy who has been born and raised in Wales is currently stuck overseas and prevented from boarding his flight home due to a recent Home Office rule change. David Toropu, from Cardiff, was told he was unable to fly back home to the UK upon check-in. The nine-year-old then became stuck in Romania, with his mother, Christina, staying behind with her son and desperately trying to resolve the apparent issue. During the first week of the Easter holidays, David, Christina, her husband and her stepson, had enjoyed a rugby tour to Venice. After a four-night stay, the family travelled to check in at Milan airport on Thursday (April 2) for their return flight to London Gatwick. They anticipated to sail through the process smoothly, like they had done on their way out, but were instead told David would not be able to board as UK border control had no record of his UK residency, reports Wales Online. Despite being born in Cardiff and spending his whole life in Wales, David holds a Romanian passport …

Border Patrol Agents Sold Challenge Coins With ‘Charlotte’s Web’ Characters in Riot Gear

Border Patrol Agents Sold Challenge Coins With ‘Charlotte’s Web’ Characters in Riot Gear

US Border Patrol agents are raising money by selling coins that commemorate last year’s wave of immigration enforcement “operations” across the country, along with other merchandise. The funds are for nonprofit organizations that list Border Patrol buildings as their address in IRS paperwork. At least two of the organizations have dedicated US Customs and Border Protection email addresses. The front side of one coin for sale reads, “NORTH AMERICAN TOUR 2025,” along with the acronyms for US Border Patrol and the acronym for “fuck around and find out”—a phrase that was initially popularized by the far-right group the Proud Boys and has been used by various Trump officials. In the center, the coin depicts a gas mask, a riot control smoke grenade, and a pepper ball launcher. On the other side, the coin appears to have a portrait of Border Patrol’s now retired commander-at-large, Gregory Bovino, with his arm raised in a salute, along with the text “COMING TO A CITY NEAR YOU!” It lists seven cities, many of which actually saw federal enforcement surges …

Israel renews strikes on Lebanon, forces Syria border crossing to close

Israel renews strikes on Lebanon, forces Syria border crossing to close

VITAL CROSSING On Saturday, Israel had said it would target the Masnaa border crossing between Lebanon and Syria, the main gateway between the two countries. “Due to Hezbollah’s use of the Masnaa crossing for military purposes and smuggling of combat equipment, the (Israeli army) intends to carry out strikes on the crossing in the near future,” said the military’s Arabic-language spokesman Avichay Adraee, urging people to leave the area. The border post was quickly evacuated on the Lebanese side and the site was virtually deserted early Sunday, with only a few guards still on duty, according to an AFP correspondent at the scene. In Syria, borders and customs public relations director Mazen Aloush insisted that the crossing, known as Jdeidet Yabous on the Syrian side, was “exclusively for civilian use and is not used for any military purposes”. Aloush said traffic through the crossing would be temporarily suspended due to the Israeli threat. Masnaa is a vital trade route for both countries and a key gateway to the rest of the region for Lebanese people. …
