Keir Starmer ‘on borrowed time’ as Labour rival threatens his job | Politics | News

The Prime Minister is “on borrowed time” and likely to lead his party to disastrous losses in the upcoming local elections, it has been claimed. Daily Expresso regular Mark Dolan made the claims after a week which saw the Sir Keir Starmer savaged by MPs in the House of Commons after more revelations came to light about the Peter Mandelson saga. Dolan believes that the saga and an expected disastrous performance in May’s local elections could spell the end of his premiership, with a former ally waiting in the wings to replace him. He told Expresso host JJ Anisiobi: “He is now on borrowed time, we have local elections in May, he is going to get eviscerated. Angela Rayner is an interesting character because I believe that her policies will be terrible, she is more to the left of Starmer.” He added: “With a country that is in debt with open borders, you need to go right, not left politically I would humbly suggest. “She is backed by the trade unions who will want their …

“We’re On Borrowed Time”: Vitol LNG Chief Warns Of Coming Food Price Shock

Pablo Galante Escobar, the head of liquefied natural gas (LNG) at Vitol, warned the audience at the FT Commodities Summit earlier today that the “world is on borrowed time” and that the Gulf energy shock will develop into a food crisis unless LNG flows resume through the Hormuz chokepoint. “We are on borrowed time. Every day this trade remains closed and every day production does not come back, we are building a problem for the future, and we are building a problem that, as I said, will be transferred from the energy side into many different sectors, with the food sector being a very important one,” Escobar said, who works world’s biggest independent energy trader. Escobar continued, “This is not sustainable, or the energy crisis will become a food crisis. Only gas can supply the feed for fertilizers. We are building a problem for the future.” He added that even if the Hormuz chokepoint reopened today, it could still take three to five months for undamaged LNG production to fully recover. Longer term, the Gulf …

Doing Philosophy in a Borrowed Tongue

Doing Philosophy in a Borrowed Tongue

Until I began my Ph.D. in the United States, I had spent my entire life in Korea, speaking Korean. While I had a sense of “using” other languages, having studied Chinese in high school, French in college, and English while studying analytic philosophy, I had never really experienced what it meant to “live” in a second language. During my first year as a Ph.D. student in the Philosophy department, I have experienced the burden of language barriers and the reality of untranslatability. As many international students can resonate, the self that speaks English feels remarkably different from the self that speaks one’s native tongue. In Korean, I am much funnier and bolder, more myself. My first semester was an ongoing struggle just to raise my hand and speak in graduate seminars. When translating my thoughts from Korean to English, the subtle nuances I intended to convey would vanish. I was painfully self-aware, terrified of speaking broken English. Whenever my limited English resulted an unsatisfactory presentation, I feared others would perceive this language deficiency as a …

Zendaya ‘Borrowed’ Armani Gown From Cate Blanchett For Rome Premiere

Zendaya’s method dressing streak for The Drama press tour has taken another chic turn. But doubling down on the whole “borrowed” trend, Blanchett had also worn it before. A longtime muse of Giorgio Armani, Blanchett previously wore the Armani Privé look at the SAG Awards in 2022. She’s long been known to re-wear looks from her personal archive as a way to promote sustainability, eco-conscious moves made arm-in-arm with longtime stylist Elizabeth Stewart. Borrowed Futures: The Federal Debt and Climate Change

Borrowed Futures: The Federal Debt and Climate Change

Both the federal debt and climate change share a peculiar trait. They are almost invisible, right up until they are not. One day the bond market panics or Miami begins scheduling scuba lessons, and everyone suddenly acts shocked. Until then, both problems remain politely ignored. They are the civic equivalent of a suspicious lump under the national carpet. We just keep stepping over it, humming loudly, and calling it freedom. The resemblance between these two crises is not physical. One lives in spreadsheets and Treasury auctions. The other lives in the chemistry of the atmosphere. But psychologically they are nearly identical. Both represent a habit of modern civilization that is as comfortable as it is dangerous. We borrow from the future in order to live pleasantly today, assuming our children will handle the bill. It is a charming assumption. Our children and grandchildren may have other ideas. The Economic and Physical Parallels The national debt is what happens when Congress spends like a drunk at Costco and then holds a press conference about fiscal discipline. …

King Charles’ ‘careful’ rules with borrowed feature at Sandringham homE

Osborne House was once the holiday retreat of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, but now one of its most opulent features keeps those at Sandringham House busy with its difficult upkeep, as it has been relocated.  According to the Sandringham estate’s official website, three beautiful chandeliers hang in the ballroom, which once resided at Osbourne House. They were then moved to Buckingham Palace before Queen Mary noticed them and had them brought to Sandringham.   © InstagramThe ballroom at Sandringham looks out over the parkland “They are each made of over a thousand pieces of Venetian crystal, and on the ground stand at seven feet high. The U.S. Olympic bobsled team borrowed Honda’s wind tunnel for test runs

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. In the daredevil sport of bobsledding, intrepid athletes crammed into a narrow sleigh offer their fates to gravity as they hurl down a banked, twisty ice track. Races can be won or lost in one hundredth of a second. The sleds reach speeds of 90+ miles per hour and the athletes withstand forces up to 5g. Some call it the ‘Formula One of ice’ for its potent combination of danger and speed.  With that in mind, it makes sense that the U.S. bobsled team worked with Honda to help them achieve their best times on the biggest athletic stage of the world: the Olympics. At Honda’s East Liberty, Ohio, facility, the Team USA Bobsled and Skeleton teams prepared to compete at the Olympic Winter Games in northern Italy.  Using Honda’s $124 million, 110,000 square-foot wind tunnel, engineers reviewed data, suggested tweaks, and put their racing expertise to use. Racing is a core component of Honda’s DNA. Usually, though, it’s …

People in the UK: tell us if you’ve borrowed money from friends or family | Borrowing & debt

Britons often turn to family and friends to borrow money now, a new survey has suggested. The survey of more than 4,000 adults commissioned by non-profit Fair4All Finance found that while 25% of respondents had taken out a Buy Now Pay Later loan, 26% had borrowed from family and 15% from friends this year. Many of those surveyed borrowed from friends or relatives after they had been rejected by traditional lenders like banks. Younger adults, households with children, and people on zero-hours contracts or in lower-paid work, the survey found, are most likely to borrow from friends and family. The research also showed that a quarter of all households would not be able to afford a £500 emergency bill without borrowing. We’d like to hear from people in the UK who have turned to friends or family for a loan, why they decided to do so and how this has affected them and their relationships.
