‘Apex’ Review: Charlize Theron Netflix Thriller Avoids Rock Bottom, but Barely

Apex, a new survival thriller from director Baltasar Kormákur, debuts on Netflix Friday. The film stars Charlize Theron as Sasha, a grief-stricken woman who, after a rather predictable accident on a mountain, travels to Australia to find closure. Once there, she finds herself involved in a grueling cat-and-mouse game as she’s hunted by a ruthless local named Ben (played by Taron Egerton).   There’s a lot the movie could’ve explored during its roughly 90-minute running time, particularly around loss and letting go. Alas, it’s all surface, no depth. It’s a bummer — but at least that surface looks cool. Let’s back up a minute and discuss the movie’s opening moments. We’re quickly introduced to Sasha, who wakes up in a tent tied to the side of a mountain. This is normal life for her and her husband, Tommy (played by Eric Bana), and it’s understood that the couple does a lot of rock climbing. But Sasha comes to a rock side she just can’t climb over, and, in frustration, they stay on the side of …

Scientists Say They’ve Figured Out What That Golden Orb Found at the Bottom of the Pacific Ocean Actually Was

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech After spending two and half years pondering a “golden orb” found at the bottom of the ocean, scientists have finally figured out what in the thundering typhoons it actually is. The aureate object looked like some sort of alien relic when it was first discovered clinging to a rock over two miles underwater in the Gulf of Alaska, before collapsing into a blob resembling molten leafs of gold when it was recovered. Now, scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Smithsonian Institution reveal that the baffling object is a remnant of what was once a giant anemone — though it took considerable detective work to reach that conclusion. “This turned into a special case that required focused efforts and expertise of several different individuals,” said Allen Collins, a zoologist and director of NOAA Fisheries’ National Systematics Laboratory, in a statement. “This was a complex mystery that required morphological, genetic, deep-sea and bioinformatics expertise to solve.” …

UBS Eyes Possible Bottom In Airline Stocks After Bear Market

UBS Eyes Possible Bottom In Airline Stocks After Bear Market

The S&P 500 Passenger Airlines Index has tumbled into a bear market since Operation Epic Fury unleashed flight disruptions across the Middle East and sent Jet A fuel prices sharply higher, with Deutsche Bank warning the fuel price shock could become an “existential threat” for the weakest carriers. The key question now is whether the worst of the selloff in US airline stocks is over, with UBS analysts beginning to ask if a bottom is near.   UBS analyst Atul Maheswari said that “most airlines will likely point 1Q towards the midpoint of the guidance” in the earnings season, adding, “Fuel spiked in early March, but airlines tend to hold two weeks of fuel inventory, implying higher fuel will impact only about 15 days of 1Q.” “This should cushion the drag to 1Q EPS. Plus, airlines have been talking up demand through the course of the quarter, suggesting upside to 1Q RASM. With respect to FY guide, we expect airlines to suspend FY’26 outlook given the significant uncertainty around fuel costs for the rest of …

Trump’s Disastrous Truth Social Company Hits Rock Bottom With Lowest Stock Price Ever

Trump’s Disastrous Truth Social Company Hits Rock Bottom With Lowest Stock Price Ever

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech President Donald Trump’s Truth Social bid, Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), has burned through an alarming amount of cash. The company, which owns the president’s struggling far-right social media platform, issued an alarming financial report earlier this month, revealing that it had lost a staggering $712.1 million last year — while earning a pitiful $3.7 million. The disastrous figures once again highlighted how the company, 52 percent of which is owned by Trump and which trades with a ticker of his initials DJT, has firmly cemented itself as a gauge of the president’s popularity rather than as a viable business. As Trump’s war on Iran rages on, polls have shown that his approval rating continues to dip. A similar story is playing out at his social media company, with shares reaching an all-time low on Friday of $9.73. That’s an enormous fall from the company’s record high of just shy of $80 shortly after the company merged …

After hitting bottom twice following Olympic glory, Nick Goepper finds joy once again

After hitting bottom twice following Olympic glory, Nick Goepper finds joy once again

“I painted a picture in my head and I basically wrote a story,” he said. “I was like, ‘Nick Goepper returns from retirement, goes into halfpipe, goes to another Olympics and wins the gold.’ I painted this picture. And I was like, ‘Would I enjoy this? Would this be fun? Would this be like something I want to dedicate the next four years of my life to?’ And so from that point forward was a series of very small steps to determine if this is something I would want to put my all into.” On Thursday in Livigno, Italy, that picture will be painted when he heads down the halfpipe for Team USA. Gold is a possibility, but Goepper said “it’s not the end-all, be-all.” “I got a lot of life to live. I got an amazing family and girlfriend and other things to look forward to,” he said. “So on one hand, it’s all that matters, and that’s kind of how I’m approaching it this year. But on the other hand, it’s not all …

Trump support in 2024 linked to White Americans’ perception of falling to the bottom of the racial hierarchy

Trump support in 2024 linked to White Americans’ perception of falling to the bottom of the racial hierarchy

A new study published in the journal Advances in Psychology sheds light on the psychological factors that influenced voting behavior in the 2024 U.S. presidential election. The findings suggest that White Americans who perceive themselves as ranking at the bottom of the racial economic hierarchy—specifically those who feel tied with Black Americans—were the most likely to support Donald Trump. These individuals also expressed the strongest opposition to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The United States currently exhibits a significant racial wealth gap. Economic statistics consistently show that the average White family holds considerably more wealth than the average Black or Hispanic family. Despite this objective reality, previous polling indicates that many White Americans feel as though they are personally falling behind in terms of their status. Psychological theories regarding “relative deprivation” suggest that people evaluate their well-being by comparing themselves to others rather than by looking at their resources in isolation. The authors of the new research aimed to understand how these subjective comparisons influence political attitudes. Specifically, they investigated where non-Hispanic White individuals …

Joe Frazier Statue Will Replace Rocky at Bottom of Philadelphia Museum

Joe Frazier Statue Will Replace Rocky at Bottom of Philadelphia Museum

With a beloved statue of Rocky Balboa being moved from the bottom of the Philadelphia Museum of Art‘s steps to its top, the Philadelphia Art Commission has officially selected a replacement artwork: a monument to Joe Frazier, an actual Philadelphian boxer (unlike Rocky, who is fictional). The Frazier statue is currently exhibited outside the Sports Complex in South Philadelphia, where the monument has been located since 2015. Before the art commission formally approved the plan on Wednesday, city officials argued that it could offer a chance for Frazier to assume greater visibility in Philadelphia, where Rocky, a character who was created for the titular film series, can hog the spotlight in the eyes of tourists. Related Articles “Relocating the Joe Frazier statue to this prominent civic and cultural space would increase public visibility for the statue, deepen educational opportunities, and create a respectful dialogue between two complementary representations of Philadelphia’s spirit: Rocky Balboa as a symbol of hard work and aspiration, and Joe Frazier as the embodiment of those values lived out in real life,” …

Mobocracy: Democratic Politicians Compete In Race To The Bottom Over ICE Shooting

Mobocracy: Democratic Politicians Compete In Race To The Bottom Over ICE Shooting

Authored by Jonathan Turley, This year, there has been a race to the bottom as Democratic politicians fuel the rage in our streets against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers. That continued this last week when Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz again rushed to judgment after a shooting, adding that the public should not treat Border Patrol or ICE officers as real “law enforcement” officers. However, rock bottom was finally reached by Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes (D), who not only said that she does not consider ICE officers to be “real law enforcement,” but raised the possibility of citizens shooting them under state law. First, the obvious.   Mayes said, “I put [“officers”] in air quotes because I don’t think they are real law enforcement.” These are real law enforcement officers under federal law, enforcing federal law. Period. The effort by Walz, Mayes, and others to question their status or treat them as impostors is clearly designed to inflame citizens and encourage greater confrontations. It is a dangerous form of demagoguery. It is sending citizens into …
