War, migration issues and climate upheaval dominated the news. NPR highlighted the “photo of the year’ — Separated by ICE. It was taken by Carol Guzy of the United States for the Miami Herald and captures the pain of a family being separated in a New York court. There were also award winners that offer hope and happiness — like that photo of young ballet students in Johannesburg, South Africa, as they pause for a reflective moment before a performance. It is all the more stirring because before Apartheid came to an end, ballet was an art form typically reserved for white South Africans.  The photographer, Ihsaan Haffejee, based in Johannesburg, says his editor had asked that photojournalists keep an eye open …

Artemis II’s Breathtaking View of the Far Side of the Moon

Artemis II’s Breathtaking View of the Far Side of the Moon

According to the space agency, the astronauts took turns photographing this region of the moon during the seven-hour approach, working in pairs. At their closest point to the surface, about 6,550 km, the moon looked to the naked eye like a ball held 40 centimeters from the face. The sharpness of the images was due to the professional photographic equipment they carried aboard. If all goes according to plan, the capsule will enter the atmosphere on April 10 and splash down in the Pacific Ocean. Hugh Jackman’s forgotten 00s epic The Fountain hailed as ‘simply breathtaking’ after finding new home

Hugh Jackman’s forgotten 00s epic The Fountain hailed as ‘simply breathtaking’ after finding new home

Hugh Jackman has starred in dozens of blockbusters hits, from the X-Men franchise to The Greatest Showman, but the actor also has plenty of other forgotten films. One of these is 2006’s The Fountain, in which the Australian actor starred as three characters in the film, which spanned from the 16th century to the space age. Three separate narratives threads are told in the film, which features Hugh’s characters attempting to find the secret to eternal life. The synopsis for the film reads: “A man travels through time on a quest for immortality and to save the woman he loves. As a 16th-century conquistador, Tomas searches for the legendary Fountain of Youth. As a present-day scientist, he desperately struggles to cure the cancer that is killing his wife. Finally, as a 26th-century astronaut in deep space, Tom begins to grasp the mysteries of life, love and death.” Despite the film only being known to some of Hugh’s biggest fans, it has recently arrived on Amazon Prime, making it the perfect weekend watch. The actor has …

The breathtaking wonders of California Highway 127

The breathtaking wonders of California Highway 127

By midwinter, Los Angeles is defined less by cold than by light. Cool, clear mornings give way to afternoons shaped by the low winter arc of the sun, painting the mountains in long shadows and the sky in improbable color. And as that low light settles in, my whole body shifts in spirit. Somewhere deep in the limbic system, a synapse fires like a flare, tracing the old circuitry of migration and memory — that annual pull toward the wide-open deserts of the American Southwest. I dream of lizards, dark skies, sand dunes and sunsets streaked in rose-mauve and smoky violet, the air heavy with the scent of wet creosote and campfire smoke. A sunrise in the desert. (Josh Jackson) But mostly I long for the open road, those forgotten highways where pavement runs through the quaint towns, weathered landmarks and the millions of acres of public land in the desert. It is a nostalgia shared by the chroniclers of the past. In 1971, Lane Magazine published “The Backroads of California,” a large-format book that …

Reddit Mod Deleted Breathtaking Photo Taken by NASA Astronaut From Space Because It Was “Blurry”

Reddit Mod Deleted Breathtaking Photo Taken by NASA Astronaut From Space Because It Was “Blurry”

Veteran NASA astronaut Don Pettit returned from his 220-day mission on board the International Space Station in April 2025, the day of his 70th birthday, making him the oldest active astronaut on the space agency’s roster. During his seven-month stint on board the aging orbital outpost, his fourth trip to space, Pettit took the time to photograph some dazzling views of the Earth below. On October 20, 2024, he took a stunning picture of an airplane that was passing by at cruising altitude hundreds of miles below him, a perspective only a handful of people get to enjoy. The plane was likely at around 7.5 miles in altitude, while the ISS orbits the Earth at around 250 miles. Don Pettit / NASA But a moderator at the r/aviation subreddit didn’t look too kindly on the shot after Pettit posted it to the forum over the weekend, deeming it too “blurry” and taking it down as a result. According to a circulating screenshot posted by a user who first brought attention to the takedown, the mod …

A Breathtaking Week of Pure Trump Id

A Breathtaking Week of Pure Trump Id

Scarcely a week ago, U.S. warplanes and drones were streaking across the Caracas night sky to deliver a swift end to the reign of the Venezuelan strongman Nicolás Maduro. The extraordinary display of kinetic violence delivered a stunning reminder about the reach of the world’s most powerful military—and symbolized the start of a new chapter for the man who commands it. Donald Trump has been emboldened. The president and his advisers believe that the strike both reignited his political momentum and underscored the lack of concrete limits on his ability to wield power at home and abroad. He blew past the need for congressional approval—or even notification—and has reveled in brandishing armed forces to intimidate foreign foes and friends alike. He seized upon a deadly confrontation on a cold Minnesota street to accelerate his push to put masked, armed federal officers in Democrat-run cities that didn’t vote for him. And he brought his campaign of retribution against perceived political enemies to a new target, one that could undermine faith in the pillars of the nation’s …
